  1. I'll bite. If this is a real story, I hope you get better soon.

Here are some take away points:

    1. If the canopy you just bought opens hard no matter which way/who packs it for you, it's probably a good idea not to jump it anymore (for health reasons). Send it back to Firebird and have them do some test jumps on it to find out what is wrong with it. Also, a $5 for a pack job is pretty cheap, if you want the slow opener, you should have given him $6.

    2. If your reserve container totals on the ground, you probably shouldn't pack it back up and go jump your hard opening canopy again. If your reserve container truely did fail to open, take some video of it and post it on YouTube, I'm sure you'll have more believers.

  2. To many variables to list. If what you say happened really did happen, then it sounds like the instructor followed his emergency procedures as trained and both he and your husband made a successful landing back on earth, good on the instructor.

You said yourself "He freaked out when it was his turn to jump", that could possibly be one of the reasons they ended up in that situation, maybe not.

If you are wondering if this is normal, probably not. Does it happen, it can. Thats why everyone signs a waiver and should realize you are jumping out of an airplane and are making the decision to do so.

What answer are you "looking" for?

Why would I go through all of that trouble to save on state tax when I can do the same with Chutingstar and they ship it right to my front door? Come on, guy.

Maybe you want to support a local dealer, maybe you like the way they measured you for your rig, maybe they've given you good service in the past...I don't know, lots of reasons to not go through chutingstar and still save on taxes. Come on, guy.

  4. I've been happy with a policy from them when they were just available for Army and Air Force, but they have opened it up to all services, active, guard, reserve, academy cadets, spouses, retirees etc.

They don't have a skydiving, war, or terrorism clause. Example quote for $600,000 is $27 a month for term to age 49.

  5. Jumper rigged a Javelin with a PC in tow, cutaway main and pulled reserve. Jumper made a safe landing under reserve.

Sorry, should have been in gear and rigging, my bad!

  6. Nice video! Probably should be in the history and trivia forum since most jumpers today are probably going to want to downsize their pilotchutes cause apparently the "jumbo" ones tend to malfunction ;)

1:27 "Noooooooooooooooo" buhahaha!:) That was the best part! Freaking condensation sucked, just bad luck all around! Nice looking PC though!

28' reserve was a very good choice on this jump, looks like it put him down nicely, could have been worse if over those houses.

Lets see some outside video! Thanks for posting!

  8. If the guy above you is so worried about who "maybe" above him, nobody is really checking who is below. Low man has the right of way.

I would have asked the organizer why it's nesasary to do a barrel roll. Maybe instead of saying just do one, go over common problems that can/do occur on brake off for this type of jump and priorities if you find that you are over the top of someone would be more useful than "just do a barrel roll".

If there are inexperienced on the jump, I see that as way more helpful as they can take that info back and pass it on.

worse. I want my students to feel relaxed. If they ask about pulling the ripcord, I'm ok with that, but the reality is that very few people want to.

I would disagree. If you give the student the opportunity and train them how to do it, the majority of people I have asked didn't know it was an option and thought it was great.

i am looking at a Cypres DOM 9/96

Um...if the unit was made in 1996, it's expired by Airtec rules. 12 yrs + 3 months max for a Cypres 1. You can trade it in for a $90 credit on a new one, but thats about it.

Also, if a unit has not had a 4 year check and it's due for an 8 year, they will only charge you for the 8 year.

wants to collect or invest in a few canopies to sell

Thats a far streach arguement. No unqualified pilot is going to "collect or invest" in a few canopies to sell later FROM A DEALER. Now buying them 3rd party is another thing, but why would I buy a NEW 100ish sq ft canopy from a dealer, not jump it, and sell it later...and try to make a profit. It doesn't work that way.

  14. I second a slider from Mark and Skyworks. He makes a domed slider that works great and I can see the advantages of the same openings due to it replacing the existing slider and its not just an add on pocket that could/could not function the same way every time.

Definitely want to make sure any canopy is not to far out of trim for the best openings you can get.
