  1. Thanks Matt, That's very informative. If this is the same Matt who works with Skydive Ogden, I just sent you some pics you took of me back in the fall. Cheers josh.
  2. I an looking a picking up a new laptop system to work with video (possibly HD video). (and, no, a desktop is not an option) Small and light is a consideration for me, so I have narrowed it down to two Dell options: 630m: smaller & lighter, can build with up to Pentium M 770 @ 2.13GHz Inspiron 6400: a little bigger and heaver, but can build with up to Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2600 @ 2.16Ghz Other builds will be the same (2GB mem, 100GB HD, etc) Prices are equivalent, with the 630m coming in a bit more expensive, due to it's smaller size. Is the Dual Core processor considerably better?
  3. Did anyone come up with a box for this camera? I've checked the cookie and bonehead sites... nothing. A previous thread mentions rimworld video @ ~$450... then dies off. Anything new?
  4. That would be what is known as a serac.
  5. A serac band is jumpable... there are plenty in the rockies that would be doable with skis. Maybe a few that would be doable without. People have certainly jumped / flown past serac bands after exiting from cliffs above. Sam Beagey flew a wing suit past some cool glaciers off some big cliff in Pak.
  6. Whether or not other areas of the public utilize the services of rescue personell, those invoved in fringe activities, such as BASE jumping, should be prepared to pay for their own rescues. Get your own rescue insurance... very simple solution.
  7. Could someone explain to me why what Felix did is worse than what, say, Jeb did when he got busted on the Eiffel tower jump? Or why, Jeb & Iiro garnering media recognition in that new TV show is laudable, whereas Miles or Shane’s media attention is, in general, not?
  8. Ummm.... To Clarify, I was asking about the use of AUTO FOCUS vs. MANUAL FOCUS functions... not full or partial auto or manual shooting modes. The FOCUS mode is something you can choose, irrespective of the SHOOTING mode that you are in. MANUAL FOCUS offering no shutter delays if the camera needs to re-adjust it's focus, or is having trouble focusing on the subject.... but potentially leading to more blurry shots. AUTO FOCUS offering continual focusing on the subject(s), but potential delays in shutter release, due to trouble focusing on moving subjects, back lighting, etc...
  9. Does everyone go with the manual focus setting on the rebel? Or are some people using the AF (continuously focusing w/ the bite switch plugged in) mode? If in manual mode, do you use some gaffer's tape or equivalent to "keep" the focus setting? (I notice that the focusing ring is somewhat loose, or easily moved) It appears on my camera (kit lens) that the 10ft - infinity focus is achieved when the ring is backed off a fraction of a turn from the stop at the long focus end. Intuitively, I would have thought that it would be all the way to then end of the focal adjustment...
  10. Yes. But it was also funny. Humour is often in bad taste.
  11. Dave Prentice makes them (google him), and I think Chris Santa does too... or can get them. Packing... well, I'll let you work that out with who ever you buy one from, but suffice it to say, that if you are competant with parachute packing it won't be hard. Be aware, that small to BIG cravats are a COMMON result of D-bagging, and line-overs a slightly less common result.
  12. Zee, You posted that to me, and I proceeded to "test" it. It's true. My ipod would repeated "skip" starting ~13,000asl and would shut itself off, usually by ~15,000asl. I tried it again in Tibet this fall... same story. My Ipod is now only semi- fuctional... so, I wouldn't recommend similar testing. Upshot being... that camera probably won't work for skydiving... Josh
  13. Critter is quite talented at making all sorts of air / mountain custom gear. Comfy and packable gear bags are something he does well. Josh
  14. Actually, the Crispis have a (removable) stiff plastic reinforcement that you can't flex with your hands. I don't think it's the _only_ thing. I do think it's an important thing that can often be overlooked. Roger. That was a bit of an exaggeration. My basic point being, if you have enough force kicking around to break a bone... it has to go somewhere. And in the absence of a proper physical (re)action, it will break something... if your ankle is too "reinforced" to break, then your tib- fib will go, or something will... Robinson is rad. On the subject of good movement skills, check this out:
  15. There's a significant difference in the two types of wings that goes far beyond simple wingloading. I've only flown a 27m^2, 1-2 wing--and only a few flights at that--so it's a far cry from what you're piloting. But, considering the differences in the wing design and your wingloading, the higher ground-speed plays into your glide angle, as well, and I'm relatively certain you're landing at an angle of incidence that's far more shallow than the steeper descent of a BASE wing. I could be way off in that last statement, though. -C. No. No.... that's quite correct. More forward, less down. They are very different animals.
  16. It's not that small. 24m2 = ~258ft2 plus an aerobatics harness (heavy) two reserves and assorted other shit makes for 60lbs of extra weight on top of my 190lbs or wing loading at ~1:1 My BASE rig is a 280.
  17. Actually, I don't agree with either abbie or Jaap (and everyone else). My opinion isn't coming from alot of experience landing BASE chutes... it's from alot of paraglider landing in tight areas... at higher wing loading and ground speeds than my BASE rig, and lots of experience walking around the mountains in boots while climbing. I've broken (and watched others do the same) my ankles in big leather ice climbing boots and even plastic boots. It's a bit of a myth that a few cm's of leather (ie. Hanwags) are going to do anything to protect your ankle from an impact of bone- breaking force. You can flex that ankle area with your hands... can't you? The only thing that will protect you is your ability to react, roll, run, etc. I've found that the more sensitivity a shoe offers the better it is... usually lighter is better for me. That being said, under sole cushioning is nice for those hard, but not dangerous landings. BTW, those are ugly shoes. -Briggs Oh yeah... sideways impacts to your ankles from landed in large fields of nasty boulders, or hitting cliffs is a different kettle of fish...
  18. thanks for the info. yes, the profile is more or less current. It being very cold here now, i'll be using the set-up to shoot skiing, kiting, and paragliding... not freefall.
  19. Ok, so I just got my new digital rebel, and the goldmember and conceptus bite swich are on their way... The port for the remote switch is behind a rubber flap also covering the USB and Vid Out ports... What to people do to keep everything sealed up as best as possible and keep dirt an moisture from getting in the other ports? Gaffers tape; put hole into rubber flap so switch can be plugged in through it...?
  20. The Suunto vector does everything you asked for, at ~200$CAD... or you can have mine, it's at some climbing crag in Railey Bay, Thailand. The Observer does the same stuff, but they put it into a more attractive package for ~$300. The Advisor adds a HR monitor $300. The T6 adds a number of other training features, but no compass, $500. The t9 has a built in GPS, $700. Maybe useful for tracking stuff. I used my vector in freefall, no problem. 5 years of use, no issues.

    FJC question

Miles D's course. Would recommend it. Miles seems to have his detractors here, but he's a really strong athlete and his systems are tight. Would be best if you have an athletic background yourself.
  22. Fold-able axe? Oh right... the kind that comes with the inflate-able crampons. Jaap: Sam... the frenchy shown jumping in the photo from Quebec, comes over to to rockies every few winters to ice climb. As far as I know, he has looked at a number of climbs, but hasn't jumped anything so far. Terminator... too slabby, except (maybe) with skis. Upper Weeping wall... potential exit to the climber's left. Cryophobia... potential exit at top of route. Send the gear down with your partner. If you have to huck with crampons, you pop em' off under canopy, and then drop them just before you land... done it under paraglider...easy.
