  1. Hey Ivan, do you have a Dutch heritage? Your last name sounds very Dutch. Cheers, Jaap
  2. Are all four still jumping?
  3. A related post... Let's try to minimize any incidents in the future. Never be too embarrassed to pick up somebody elses trash and never be afraid to call somebody on their behaviour. I mean, when people start rubbing tri-tip on their shirts and doing static apnea in ice-water, maybe it's time somebody says something about it. We're always guests everywhere we go and even minor incidents can easily cast an image on the entire base jumping community. Next time a non-basejumper shows great hospitality, don't hesitate to write a thank-you note or maybe bring a little present. A sixpack of beer, a bouqeut of flowers, or a box of chocolate goes a long way.
  4. It's something that only a thousand people on this entire planet care about. If you really want it fixed quickly, make sure that money can be made from it, or that the United States department of defense takes an interest. Until then, all canopy openings will remain way too chaotic and turbulent for any us to ever fully understand. Of course, therein lies some of the beauty of basejumping as well. Ask yourself honestly; would you still jump if your five year old nephew could safely huck himself of any cliff as easily as he could ride the rollercoaster? From an email-conversation between three experienced (800+ jumps) BASE jumpers:
  5. With this caveat. Word...
  6. Having done a sketchy slider-down cliff on my 16th jump, I'm in no position to comment on whether or not he was capable of jumping there. However, if I understand it correctly, this injury was only the result of a poor rear-riser landing. It probably didn't help that he was in a hostile environment and putting a lot of stress on his senses. Nonetheless, this accident could have happened just the same on a skydive if one would skip proper coaching before attempting a rear-riser landing. Practice rear-riser landings on skydives and at friendly base landing areas. On a base canopy a proper rear-riser flare can be as soft as a landing on toggles. It's great to hear Bernie is heading home and surrounded by friends and family. Heal well and quick dude!
  7. Maybe so, but not until after you've done it a couple of times. I'm still a kid and there are few things more fun than sneaking around in the dark. Base is the only illegal thing I can ethically reconcile with my ideas about what is right and wrong. I can take video, leave only footprints, break nothing and hurt nobody in the process but myself, and still stick it to the man. I guess over time I'll change my mind. For now I'll be the young punk that isn't afraid to admit he likes to sneak around. That is; until I get to ride in the back of a police car, stay in jail overnight, take a shower in the morning, and then end up dropping the soap-bar. Considering I'm not posting anonymously, this post might be a little too honest. Ah, what the heck...
  8. I wonder if anybody has some good footage of tail inversions. I've read about them and I think I sort of understand what they are, but there's nothing like video for some good visualization. Thanks, Jaap
  9. Very interesting, thanks! This was something I had not heard of before. It wasn't mentioned in this thread afaik.
  10. This risk is huge when you put them through the grommets, but not the keeper rings. If you actually take them out of the keeper rings as well as the grommets, the risk is a lot less. It's not neglectible, but unlikely. Especially with properly set and double-checked brakes, I believe this is an acceptable risk in skydiving. There would be no point in doing this. The point of doing it vice-versa (grommets but not keeper rings) is that you can push a toggle through the grommet to release it. However, with big-grab toggles, pushing it through a grommet will take too much time. WLO toggles or a hook-knife will save you a lot faster I imagine. I'm not actually talking from experience, so take this all with grains of salt.
  11. Never use the line-mod when jumping slider up as it puts too much strain on the lines and trailing edge of the canopy. As far as I know, which ain't much, the real problem with using the LRM slider-up is that the steering lines are the main contributors to pushing the slider down, henceforth using the LRM might result in a slider that comes down too slow or not at all. I don't quite understand how the LRM could put too much stress on the canopy or lines, especially if you use a shallower brake setting. I'm not recommending using the LRM on slider-up base jumps. Especially not if you have WLO or similar toggles. However, I've succesfully used the LRM on slider-up skydives just for the heck of it, and aside from being prepared for a slider coming down slowly, I don't see too much problems with it... Edited to reiterate: ...in skydiving! General consensus is to not use the LRM on slider-up base jumps.
  12. http://www.wunderground.com/US/UT/Moab.html or try calling Vertigo.

    The cat flip

Huh? That sounds contradictory to what I've been taught. Please elaborate. Anyway, you probably already thought of this, but diving-board training would be great for this. Edited to add: I assume you've seen the Higgly Wiggly in the "Portland Crew In Perrine" video (the one with the backseat packjob)? Not entirely the same, but related...

    What a beautiful sport...
  15. Might not be entirely BASE related, so feel free to move it to Bonfire if deemed offtopic. How to Get Out Alive: From hurricanes to 9/11: What the science of evacuation reveals about how humans behave in the worst of times. I wonder if BASE jumpers would share a common reaction to such events. Of course, the best thing is to break a leg on a jump the day before, so you miss your flight and never have to experience the plane accident in the first place.
  16. How often have you been fully geared up and ready to jump, but decided otherwise and climbed down? I don't care about the reasons. There are too many to list, and any reason is a good one. I'm just curious about jump/walk ratios and if people log this information. Probably not a log for every incident, but do you keep track of a count; jump numbers vs climb numbers? Thanks, Jaap
  17. Mike Myers is Canadian, isn't he? If I ever run into that guy, I'm going to use my gold member on him in ways he can't even begin to imagine. It'll hurt...
  18. I wonder if she has shared a bed with a Dutch male or female before. Somehow I doubt it. The futon... you wish!
  19. The bunny suit that was wrapped around that carrot? I'd like to see you wear that! Okay, this is it. I'm slowchatting in the Bonfire. Soon I won't get any work done anymore. Shortly after I'll lose my job. No job, no work-visa, I'll have to leave the country. I'll become a bum and travel to California. Do you still have that room available?
  20. Mmmm, veggies. Will you disguise it as a rabbit? Or will you disguise as a rabbit?
  21. This is my two-hundredth and most useless post ever! Woohoo!
