  1. Not yet, plans changed. Tentative plan says I'm in town from Saturday till Friday. Will be in touch as soon as I have formal itinary. Looking forward to meeting you! Thanks for the PM.
  2. Hey, gonna be in town next week. Travel options limited, but London is close enough. Worth bringing a rig? Please PM. Thanks, Jaap
  3. Be nice Abbie. I'm sure they are just trying to help, rather than trying to make money. We're not all the Nobel prize winner that you are... Speaking of movies, when are we going to finish Horny BASE jumpers from Outer Space? Now that Russel and Collin have done their thing I think we're ready to start editing.
  4. Hey, BASE WIKI is trying to compile a list of full length BASE movies. We don't intend to ever become a complete list, but I'm sure I am missing a ton of older movies (forgive me, I'm a new kid on the block). I'd also like more information for the newer movies. If you have some time, please have a look at the list and leave some comments; where to get them; what year they are from, who made them, etc. Thanks, Jaap
  5. I was just watching the ABA 2003 video again and I just gotta ask for more details on the section 8 minutes into the movie. Some BASE jumper lands on a one-story roof-section, retrieves his canopy from a lamp-post and then steps through a window in a room full of excited women. Does anybody have more details on what happened in that room afterwards?
  6. I just want to confirm this as well, having tested this using a tensile tester. We averaged 158 lbs. Unless you were to carefully lower yourself and very slowly increase the force on the break cord. You know this of course, I just felt like pointing it out...
  7. How old is the antenna? Google Earth uses data ranging from one to over ten years old. Perhaps the antenna was build after the satellite shot the imagery.
  8. Thanks Tom, much appreciated. Getting rid of most gear before the jump seems like a good strategy. Absolutely no reason? Jumping is as much about the journey as it is about the finish, if not more so.
  9. About combining ice climbing and BASE, or just an opinion in general? Actually, I'd be interested to hear it either way.
  10. Does anybody have any experience with or opinions on combining ice climbing and BASE jumping?
  11. Actually, the skydiving and BASE audience combined would not even be close to a market big enough. An average console game today needs to sell a million units to be considered succesful. Few games actually sell that much but publishers offset the twenty failed games they release with their one eight-million unit bestseller. That's what makes it a risky business to begin with. EA is one of the few publishers that manages to work outside of this model by generating revenue with nearly all their releases. This is why they are so succesful. A BASE or even a BASE and skydiving game would target wuffos and nothing else. Experienced skydivers and BASE jumpers would be at the very bottom of the list of target demographics. If BASE jumpers happen to enjoy the game as well, that's just a lucky side effect. I think the number of active skateboarders versus non-skateboarders that play Tony Hawk Skateboarding is easily one to a thousand. Of course the difference here is that most people have tried skateboarding at one point in their life. Fewer people have flown a canopy.
  12. For the record, I also give stupid answers. But I made that very clear to him, lest I give the impression that I know what I'm talking about.
  13. Anytime. It's a little windy these days , but the cliff is otherwise jumpable year round. In fact, it's beautiful in the winter when the surrounding mountains are covered in snow. There might be some snow on the exit point, but we'll just snowboard off of it or wipe it off... Just let me know man. It's only a two hour drive for you and you already have a place to stay. You really have no excuse...
  14. Dude! How can you like sushi and not come visit Vancouver? I'm sure Erik and Paul are bad-ass sushi chefs, but when you come jump some objects in Vancouver with me, I'll take you to a place that has Sushi that makes you feel as if there is an angel taking a dump on your tongue (actual Dutch saying). Seriously, this place has the best sushi on the planet for an incrdibly low price. And I'm seriously picky about my sushi, having tried at least fifty different sushi restaurants around here. Man, just thinking about the salmon nigiri there makes me hungry. I'll have to go there tomorrow... Ask Raistlin if you don't believe me. Of course, the real reason you've not coming up here is that you're not good enough to jump our sketchy cliff. But don't worry, we understand...
  15. That's another interpretation...
  16. It would obviously have to stray from realistic BASE to make it appeal to more than just us. I do think it's possible though, the same way Tony Hawk is played by millions of people that don't actually skateboard. Yeah, that's what I'm curious about. Hence the poll. Yeah. Although I think if we present it in a semi-realistic way I don't think too much harm is done. Obviously there would be no packing instructions in the game. And also, there's still Darwinism. Knowing Dwain's reputation through close friends, my guess is he'd be laughing if he saw it. I'm not sure about other jumpers though, not to mention the families of said jumpers. Unfortunately it'll take a team of 60 people about fifteen months to make a game like this, let alone the required budget for such a game.

Perhaps you might find more sympathy here if you explained what is stopping you from gaining more skydiving experience. Be forewarned that a lack of money is a poor excuse. I knew a guy who worked thirty hours a week besides fulltime college to fund his passion and then rode his bicycle twenty miles to the neareast dropzone because he didn't have a car. That's dedication...
  18. For the record, I'm with ya brother. I used to play a lot when I was in university, but ever since I've become a professional developer I've stopped playing them. Right now my only console is an Xbox, but I only have to watch DVDs. I don't own any video-games. I rather play outside. Sometimes I feel like a drug-dealer. In manufacturing, but not a user himself; keeping lazy kids on the couch in front of the telly instead of sending them into the great outdoors. Oh well, we all have to make a living somehow. It was that, or prostitution. And with Abbie on the scene, being a male gigolo just didn't cut it anymore.
  19. Professional forum moderator of course. It's a fulltime job , duh!
  20. Yeah, the first chapter of the game could be called the FJC and it could happen at a model of the Potato bridge. As you gain experience and prove your skills, new areas will open up.
  21. I was gonna go with Miles Daisher actually.
  22. That's one of the most bad-ass things I've ever read on these forums. Nice work!
  23. Following up on an earlier post I made, what's your take on a BASE video game? Imagine a non-violent GTA style free-roaming environment in which you can go anywhere you want. Gaining experience opens up new objects. Earning a reputation gets you invited to events. You get to decide what gear you use and what your setup is (slider-down, -up). You can do aerials, you can pull low, you can fly your wingsuit past downtown buildings. You will have to sneak into buildings and past guards. It could have Metal Gear Solid style sneaking and Jet Set Radio style chases all the way up to being chased by cops, the NPS and the army (with dogs and helicopters). Online you can do multiways. I'm not sure what the objective of the game would be though. Get your BASE number? The game would be over too early. Do you get points awarded for your jump, based on several criteria? Share your ideas in this thread. Aside from whether or not such a game is feasible from a business and marketability point of view, I'm more curious if you feel this game destroys all that is BASE and its associated image of being an underground sport. Cheers, Jaap Edited to add: Let me clear up that in no way would this game try to get close to representing what making a BASE jump feels like. That's not what it is about. It's about taking a great sport and using it as inspiration to make a fun game in the spirit of Tony Hawk's skateboarding.

If I planned on jumping the gear in actual BASE environments, I absolutely agree. Fair enough. What I'm trying to say is that there have been inventors that didn't necessarily have an established background or experience in a certain field and yet managed to come up with an invention that revolutionized the field. As BASE jumpers, we can be receptive to such ideas without compromising safety or losing respect for history and established standards and traditions.
