  1. Here is the obit for Dan .... quite a remarkable person. farewell Daniel louis Oct. 23, 2004 Saturday, October 23, 2004 Daniel G. McFadden Daniel Gerard McFadden, father and aviator, made his final flight Sunday at Fredericksburg, VA. Born in Akron December 5, 1953, Dan was fifth of 13 children of Vincent and Florence McFadden of Canton. Dan was an altar boy, sang in the St. Louis Church choir of Louisville and was an Eagle Scout in Troop 15 B.S.A. Graduating St. Thomas Aquinas in 1972, he joined the Navy, then Air Force ROTC at the University of Akron, graduating as Lieutenant with a degree in Theater Arts. After flight training at Del Rio, TX Dan flew hundreds of refueling missions for the Strategic Air Command, later for the Air Force and Navy Reserves, serving in Desert Storm, he left service in 1998 as Major. He acted and directed at the Players Guild of Canton and theater groups nationwide. He was flying for a parachute school when his plane crashed just after take-off. No one else was injured. He is survived by his mother; former wife, Diane Watson of Louisville; their daughter, Kimberly; and his siblings, Frank and Vincent McFadden, Florence Stahly, Margaret Carney, Angel Steed, Katherine Simmons, Mary McFadden-Cohen, Tim, Dave and Monica McFadden, and Ann Granata. Dan is preceded in death by his father and older brother, Michael. Services are at St. John's Church of Canton 10 a.m. Saturday, October 23. A graveside ceremony at St. John's Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's Hospice of Louisville.
  2. An otter? At Hartwood? A little tight for a loaded otter, dontcha think? Yea, I was thinking the same. I think the runway is 3300 feet and a mix of grass and whatever. I have been on many a fat-boy load on the old T-bo and that old beast made it, I suppose an Otter can too. . Maybe one of the pilot types can tell us?
  3. Dammmn... not sure where I fit in there, I don't know if I know anyone who has not been pissed at Harry for one reason or another and I know that Harry has been pissed at me on more than one occasion. Can I still jump at Hartwood?
  4. Perhaps I have missed this in a previous thread/forum but is there any idea of age/DOM and number of jumps for both of the failed student rigs? Are the student Javalins beefier in their construction and material or are they simply a Javalin with a MLW and different deployment system? thanks
  5. Thanks Tailgate, apparently I missed that listing . Bet the scenery is beautiful from altitude. I am not from WV, but I can say this, it is a very scenic state.
  6. USPA does not show any group member DZ's, so I was hoping to find a non-member zone for a friend of my in Charlseston. thanks
  7. Are there any non USPA Group Member dropzones in or around Charleston, West Virginia ? thanks
  8. [reply In addition to altitude though, I'll also be looking for attitude (positive vibe) and professionalism. Oh yes! Professionalism is right at the top of the list as well. I can put up with quite a bit as long as I see that the staff and DZO are operating professionally. The current HPC website still does not reflect the new owner or any operational info such as when they will open and the cost of a jump. I have not seen any advertisement or heard anyone else mention the 'new' HPC other than you. We shall see what the next few weeks hold for HPC.
  9. If the new owner has aircraft that fly, and competent pilots, then Hartwood will probably be to my liking. It is an easy DZ to spot, as in doing the spot, from altitude and I like the landing options. As long as the plane gets 13k for a reasonable price, I will probably be satisfied. With a 206 that should be no problem, if they stop at 10k, well, I won't be at Hartwood, and I imagine a lot of other folks won't be either.
  10. If you are in the market for a new system, you can get FCE for $99. If not, you may be able to wheel/deal with them. Also and supposedly, the Apple online sales people are looking at user accounts that have configured a system, saved the configuration, but did not order. What the sales people are doing then is contacting the perspective customer and offering a deal. Sooooo, you may be able to work out something.
  11. The new owner told me the end of July, he made this statement to me via a phone conversation at the end of May. I hope he pulls it off, Hartwood was always a great place to jump and the weekend cookouts were a blast. If Hartwood reopens at the end of July I will stay in the sport, if not, then my gear goes up for sale. While I can say nothing bad about the two other, excellent dropzones in this area, they just are not to my liking. I must be getting too old and set in my ways.

  13. Christ ! I would just like to get the damn magazine. The last two months have not been sent. Called USPA, they resent the June issue about two weeks ago, still not here, the July issue has not arrived. Called USPA again today, person tells me that the July issue shipped on 15 Jun and to give the mail 30 days for delivery. If I lived in Australia or Hawaii I might understand waiting 30 days, but I live in Virginia. I am considering asking USPA to not send the magazine at all, this way since I won't be expecting the magazine I won't be irritated when it does not arrive.
  14. Safety is the ONLY topic that I will use to judge a DZ and then I do so with discretion. Everything else is very subjective. Was I having a bad day, where the regulars at the DZ having a bad day? The personal dynamics at a DZ are amazingly, well, dynamic. I take that into account, that and the fact that I know that I can be at times, difficult. But I am learning to tone that part of me down
  15. That does not solve all the problems. The larger problems deal with ActiveX, Scripting and Frames. I use a software firewall, Agnitum, and run Opera for the Browser. Even then, I only enable ActiveX, Scripting and Frames on sites that I absolutely trust. The only time I use IE is when I go VPN to my company network. Opera will work there, but the site is really designed for MS products. Don't recall where I read this, but supposedly Bill Gates made a statement that IE was to be redesigned from the ground up due to the number of security issues involving IE.
