  1. my mac workflow/archiveing: At the begin of the week the empty card in my video camera gets a volume name in the format: YYYYKWXX (2011KW40 for calendar week 40 in 2011). This way any projects that get worked on on the weekend reference the correct volume name. At the end of the weekend I create a diskimage (DMG) of the entire card with the same volume id. This dmg is put on my local hd for and mounted for further work (is then recognised as though it is a camera). It is sync'd to my external fw800 video drive. At home it gets sync'd to a drobo that only runs while doing backups. If the jumps were something spectacular then the dmg will be sync'd to amazon s3. FinalCutExpress at least stores the volume id of where the media came from so reconnecting to this media at a later date a bit easier. Basically if my flat burns down, not being able to give someone a copy of their tandem jump that they have lost is rather on the end of my list of problems ;-) Photos are similar with all images getting ingested (aperture). All images are then sync'd to the drobo. Images that do not quite make the grade are then moved to an external usb disk so that should they still be needed that they can be accessed, but are not blocking up my primary drive. Images that make the grade then get sync'd to amazon s3 for off-site storage. For most of my file work and all of my sync'ing I use Forklift which supports s3 out of the box.
  2. just last weekend I used my d80 and cx105 for both scuba and skydiving. I find the waterproof boxes to be more of a hindrance than a help
  3. roxio creator allows you to burn hd to dvd's (it basically just a different folder structure and file format) that will then be properly recognised as blue-ray on blue-ray players. you are restricted in film length, but for tandem videos this should not really be a problem. I'm sure that roxio is not the only dvd authoring sw that offers this.
  4. it may be a long shot, but how about running a photo/video recovery program over the card. they are less bothered with the format of the medium and look for the media files themselves. CardRecovery has a trial version where you can see if it finds anything at all.

  6. Hi Maria! seeing as you are taiking about a couple of macs, have you considered final cut server. it supports "Multiformat delivery" http://www.apple.com/finalcutserver/features/delivery.html. ie setup a target to render to mpeg2 and youtube-size for each export. seeing as it is not too hardware bound it should run on a hackentosh too :-). thus one machine to ingest from the video guys firewire/h264 -> aic/prores and into fcs, one machine to do the editing (fetch from fcs, edit return to fcs) and fcs export to dvd and youtube. saw a presentation here about a year ago on fcs and fcp, was quite amazing what they were doing. maybe someone at apple nz could give you a mini demo of the capabilities. I just tested final cut express (4.0.1) and was able to import h264 from my camera's memory card and work on a project in parallel in the same instance, so no lockup there (though I somehow doubt that this will work with firewire import). during export there is a definite lockup. regards charlie

I was part of the national 4 way team (videoman), jumping a 105sqft high performance main, regretting that I had not gone for the 95. I was hottest thing since sliced bread. Swooping any and everything. We all bought new systems and I naturally bought the smallest container for my main and then bought a reserve that would fit in there, reconing that if I can handle a 88sqft (been there, done that) main then a 108 reserve cannot be a problem (WL over 1.85). I was one cooooooool ou with eight o's. I was invincible! As per all fun events in aviation, three things happened. I went low while taking part in a big way, I had line-twists on the main where a cut-away was the best/only option and I had a pressure-knot in lines of my reserve. with a 170 reserve I might have limped away, with a 150 reserve I might have broken a leg or two, with a 108 reserve, see the above Lesson learned: stuff around all you like (naturally within reason and your capabilities) with your main, but always choose a reserve that will get you down safely. regards, heal quick, jump again charlie 1) stuffed everything up pretty well 2) of everything the upper body took quite a beating 3) of the upper body the heart came off worst; stopped beating for a while, but there's nothing like 220V across the nipples to get it up and running again 4) the brain got knocked around a bit too: Doctor: it's OK, he should be normal again; Girlfriend: fantastic, because he wasn't normal beforehand 5) lumbar vertebrae 2 is bone dust 6) lumbar vertebrae 3 a few fractures 7) lumbar vertebrae 4 is bone dust 8) lumbar vertebrae 5 too many fractures to count, not enough to be bone dust 9) complex fracture of the right leg, tib went out one side fib out the other 10) broken right heel 11) broken left heel, got pushed clean out of the side of my foot 12) a rib bought it too 13) and there was some internal bleeding that needed to be syphoned off -- If you haven't killed yourself doing it, its not a sport... its a game. (sorry PhreeZone)
  8. 1st cutaway Aff Level 4, torn main, docile, played with it till my hard deck kept the handles. 2nd cutaway borrowed gear, stuck slider, didn't play with it at all, kept the handles. 3rd cutaway tandem, broken steering line, you enjoy the freefall? good, because we're going to do it again .... here, hold these, it you drop them, you pay for them (they were all there after we landed)
  9. Not really a skydiving story, but... Many moons ago when nudity was still expressly banned in the good old Old South Africa, a pilot in the company where I used to work buzzed the local illegal nudist beach with a Sikorsky 58. Unfortunately a local reporter who just happened to have his camera along sitting on the far side of the beach got a great shot of a 58 barreling along just above the shore, with nudists scattering in all directions. This photo then naturally adorned the front page of the newspaper the next morning. The same pilot who then a few years later put both skids of a JetRanger into the sea getting a TV cameraman, standing on the skids, wet to the knees, after the cameraman repeatedly 'instructed' him to keep the damn helicopter lower for a certain shot . charlie
  10. Hi Rob, We were there begin 2003, and used 18 hours of flight time. A great bunch of guys running the place, we had a total blast there. Quite a shock too, as it is in the middle of an indoor amusement-park. Cons: it is on top of a mountain at 1800m (5400'). I would recommend 4 way only with old suits, as you will spend quite a bit of time on the net. Freefly/style only for pretty light people. 11. Actually I must say that Tonto's suggestion : > A change on this site? Status on the "formal" forums should be > on a jump numbers/years in the sport/disipline experience formula, > and should be clearly displayed for all to see. would be a great addition. The veteran/ old hand etc. status type indication had me fooled when I first started reading DZ. Why is that newbie arguing with an old hand? So a nice 'JJJJJ/YYYY' on the same line as the other status would be neat. Yes I know that you cannot police what people write in their profiles and no, jump numbers/years in sport are not an ideal way of checking what someone's qualifications are for giving advice on a particular topic, but it is the only practical way available on a forum like this. (It would certainly save me having to have a look at every second poster's profile when reading a forum :-) One can still look at the profile afterwards if one wants to know with how big a pinch of salt one should regard this person's information about on a particular topic dependent on their interests/qualifications/location. charlie newbie 1400J/6Y Indemnification: - I am not against telling people that their chest-strap is open - I am not against newbies posting in any forums - I am not against people having third nipples - Speak to your jumpmaster/coach/instructor/CI/S&TA/thread moderator before believing a word I have written here
  12. A few years ago we were doing 4-way training from an AN-2 in Hungary. In the evening a mild mannered balloon pilot offered us a balloon jump the next morning. 4000' to 5000' at about $20 per person if there were 4 of us. No problem ... The next morning we all helped him kit up when I notice a few holes in the balloon, covered with advertising banners. Funny, they look like the have been burnt in. What the hell, I have a parachute, don't I ... The balloon first gets filled with cold air and once it is partly inflated, the rest is done with the burners. So the pilot decides that there is enough air inside and it is time to burn, fires up the burner. The air streaming past pulls the sides of the balloon inwards and already we have the next hole burnt in the balloon. The pilot looks at it decides it is not too bad but decides to pump a bit more cold air in before continuing. Well if he's prepared to go up without a parachute, then what the hell, I have a ... Finally without the addition of any more holes we are ready to start, everyone in and off we go. No wind on the ground, and I am thinking that it will be rather boring landing back on the air field, but then come the uppers and I am thinking it will be quite interesting to land off-field in a country where I don't speak the language ... 3000' and we start getting ready. We speak no Hungarian, the pilot speaks no German and about 4 words of English. How would you like us to go? Single exits, or 2 -2; what do you mean all four at once!!, you have done this before, haven't you ... Me being the most experienced (about 300 jumps at that time) told the others to not all jump at once, but to leave a bit of time between 'exits'. 4000' and we start going. I went number 3 and could already see the rate of climb on my altimeter. Have fun mister pilot ... I found a nice field next to a corn-field to land in and am gathering my chute together when there is a god almighty crashing sound behind me. Sounds like a herd of cows going through the corn. Actually it was one of the less experienced jumpers :-) landing parallel to the field where I was but two meters into the corn-field. The stampede ended with a very wet squelch as her feet caught in the corn and she pancaked in. You alive in there ... The pilot's 14 year-old son was driving the chase car (a 4-wd lada), and finally found us all and off we went in search of the balloon. About half an hour later we finally see the balloon still inflated standing in a field. We drive as far as the roads take us and there the son switches down into 4-wd and drives though planted fields the rest of the way. Sorry mister farmer ... When we get to the balloon the pilot, white as a ghost, is sitting on the side of the basket chain smoking. We try to speak to him, and all he can do is light the next cigarette and point to his recording altimeter which shows his highest altitude to be around 14000'. Well you did want us to all go at once ... We got a ride back to the airport, but no offer of another jump the next morning, funny that ... charlie
