  1. Just wanting to get a handle on how most folk see things when it comes to swooping.
Seems it's commonly accepted that wingsuiting/freeflying/camera all increase risks, however they don't rise to the level of "pushing the envelope".
Also I'm sure that most everyone agrees that Jeb's "threading the crack" for example is absolutely pushing the envelope as is BASE.
    So what about swooping?

  2. reply to no one in particular-
Don't we tell noobs not get too gadget dependent?
An audible could very well fail and your eyeball altimeter better be on anyway?
This just seems like a slippery slope.........
If your reactions a bit dulled-either lack of sleep, hung over or whatever-a device won't make up for it.
So instead of he dropped a toggle or was low/slow, not low but still slow, then it would be his gadget malfunctioned? Same outcome huh?
vs earning the experience by slowly gradually patiently pushing the envelope?
    Just food for thought..............

  3. An open door is not a major issue

I don't want to violate any copyright-so if it covers it-credit to "parachuting the skydiver's handbook" by Dan Poynter.

Here's a pic that shows that an open door can be a very big deal.......
Pics worth more than a thousand words-please take it seriously.....

  • SC engines are fine too. Bigger part is looking for a hp/tq curve that favors low end tq no matter if SC or turbo or not.
When I was doing a fair amt of towing around a lot of horses I had a turbodiesel-cant beat them for towing!

Yeah... I don't think I have had many experiences with door open fully from take-off, but traveling and jumping I think there have been occasional instances where the door is propped open maybe 12 inches or so on take-off..

I definitely agree with a PP that I too despise/fear the partial cracking of the door on take-off- either open it or close it damn it, either allow enough room for the whole skydiver to follow the PC out if necessary, or prevent it in the first place!

At my home dz, on really hot days, they'll ask for it open right after seatbelts come off (1k)... especially if I am right near the door, I am guarding my hackey like there is no tomorrow and pretty much holding my breath and checking my alti- "okay 1100k, emergency exit go to reserve and pray I don't die... 1600, reserve and pray... 2500 okay finally okay with the main as the first shot..." and then around 3.5-4 k normal pull altitude for my main, I can breathe again, lol.

But it is fully open as opposed to partial in such situations at my home dz, so I do feel better about that- I just get anxious between 1k and my normal pull alti. I'm a nervous newbie, but yes I would rather suffer through a few more minutes of heat and wait an extra 1k feet or so after seatbelts off to open the door..

And at least it is not generally open before the seatbelts come off as the original post referenced! That is scary stuff!

Thanks for posting-- Totally valid points about needing to keep the door shut AT LEAST until seatbelts are off, perhaps a bit later, and also about leaving it either fully open or fully closed at any point.. hope all other dZs take heed! Could go very very badly if not...

Very good to see you paying attention like that-
A little additional food for thought for you-
Any hills around the DZ that the aircraft climbs over? Then that 1000ft/1600ft etc. just became a lot less.......
Also consider any hills for your planned breakoff and pull altitudes-good example of this is in San Diego.

There was an article in the Tacoma News Tribune about this a month or so ago. It has become such a problem in some areas that there is talk about having hikers carry out their urine too. So, on top of having to haul out blue bags full of shit we have to carefully keep our piss bottles separated from our gatorade bottles.

Hey if you mix up the gatorade and piss bottles just think of it as recycling. ;)

  • A few friends had asked me about this incident-then saw the posts here and finally watched the whole video myself.
Replies to no one in particular.

And yes my perspective is from one who worked patrol for quite a few years even if I work from a desk now. And yup, I had complaints from the public also-handled at watch commander level. That's why you roll tape!

    First off-bad bad tactics!
When the cop yells about a fucking idiot-he should be addressing himself-if the driver was a bad guy-with or without a permit and with a gun or hell even a knife-he would of been dead in that back seat no doubt about it and maybe his partner too. Secure the scene first.

Next-yes pretty obvious from the comments made about the location that it's a known not good area and time of night-they are up to no good.
next part of that-shitty tactics for getting a solid bust for the prostitution-think like a defense lawyer to shut down those arguments of "I knew her from driving a cab" or like above comments "maybe Williams sister was best friends with the hooker". Seperate the parties and get statements from all on what when where who why. Then you have the prostitution bust on pimp john and hooker.

Pretty obvious also the cop doesn't like the idea of CCW from his statements. (personally I think CCW can be a very good thing) But yes this CCW holder is an idiot out trolling for hookers-so do your job to get a solid bust for that and (if their laws cover that) then it's revoked.

Yes he does make threats-and with his statements about "executing " the guy-now if he does shoot the next CCW holder he contacts-even if it was with good cause and in real self defense-he's opened himself up to civil and criminal charges when they go back to this video. Idiot!

Why let the other two go? Wait till they're run-verify name and dob, they got warrants? Never saw the prostitute close enough-but is she actually under 18? Big added charges would be there for pimp and john.

And I wouldn't want to work with this guy unless this is a one time just having a real bad day-I've had calls before that I had code 4, then a hothead showed up and wound everybody back up-real pia! And these guys make everybody elses jobs that much more difficult.

    OK, off soapbox lol.

I don't find them offensive, but I can see where many people would (for example, I wouldn't have something like that where my grandma could see it). I didn't vote because the idea of banning things just feels weird to me. That said, if I stuck a huge red plastic vagina from my differential, I would expect to get pulled over. Would it be a double standard? Probably, genitals are genitals. It's just that far more people are offended by vaginas than a swinging coin purse. One thing to think about though is this, could you get away with displaying a larger than life model of any other genitalia in public?

    BOOBIES!

Seems like a lot of naive people around.

the stupid ones who think torture is ok by the state are the ones i worry about...

Actually I just consider myself a realist.

And as an example the recent arrest of the Imam and 2 of his sons for collecting and sending money to terrorists-yes he went through the motions of obtaining a piece of paper that said he was a US citizen, however there is no way I would consider him as such. More like a terrorist on a mission that included gettting citizenship here to complete his mission.
So if he just disappeared (and secrets were kept secret-yes like Jimmy Hoffa!) instead of being arrested-and we even anything knew about it-I figure I could read between the lines. Either he went into hiding or someone scooped him up.
And I have to ask again-if whatever happened to one of these guys actually prevented your own kids along with hundreds of others from being raped tortured and blown up-would you honestly give a fuck?
What would the parents of the kids in Beslan have to say? Before and then after?
And I do realize that whatever moral stand anyone may have sitting behind a keyboard would more than likely change completely if they were instead sitting outside their kid's school hearing them scream.
    Because I'm just a realist.

  • Seems like a lot of naive people around.
You think every country hasn't done "whatever neccesary" over the years? You think if torture did lead to Osama that we would ever really know?
Do you really think the real secrets are ever going to come to light? At least not for a long while if ever?
    Hey! Where's Jimmy Hoffa!!!!!!
Hell, what the Soviet Union had running in biological warfare factories during the cold war is still coming to light, and we'll probably never hear all of it. (They even weaponized Ebola-some scary shit!)
And if taking a terrorist and skinning the bastard alive (of course keep it a damn secret!-loose lips sink ships!) kept them from carrying out an attack on US schools like in Beslan Russia- think I'd really give a fuck?
I realize this post will probably stir up some shit-I just consider it a dose of reality.....
Fact is intel has come out of Afghanistan that one of their plans has been attacks on US middle schools. If that intel has helped prevent that horror from happening to your own kids would you honestly give a fuck how it was obtained?

Instead of me giving/drawing wind-briefings to students I'll ask the students to draw their circuit on the board and explain. Then ask if the rest agrees with this and give input. This helps them to use their brain and learn and not just follow my instructions.

For myself, I'll keep filming 4-ways and opening at 4500 ft and stay in the brakes as long as I can to clear as much airspace as possible and try to land last and have all the room to make my swoop.

After all the recent incidents-So are you saying that even if you're not quite the last to land or the next load is already approaching that you'll still make your swoop???
    :S:S:S

I have a V4 and a X2 on order. Should have both soon. I look forward to comparing them.

But i will be biased having flown V2 and V3 a lot.

    When I have some extra$$$$$[:/]
I can't keep up with every new wingsuit. Well that is my wallet can't!!!
So I guess I'll have to keep flyin my old outdated mach I. :P
    (Yea I'm just jealous!)

  • Rules are clear. The pilot is called Pilot In Command for some reason. If he says during an emergency that you have to leave the plane, you go. When he says to stay, you have to stay. If you jump when he's says to stay in the plane ...

If the pilot says stay, then absolutely stay.
I believe the questions come into play if the pilot is not saying either stay or go.
My personal take is if the plane is in an obvious death spiral, then I'm clawin' my way out. Otherwise sit and wait for the pilot to say what he wants.

  • I'm posting here rather than to con't in incidents.
It was brought up in the Pitts Meadow thread that even if the pilot hasn't said to get out that some people would still exit and this was being questioned.
CspenseFLY mentioned that he would exit and he's a commercial pilot.
Also mentioned was that the pilot's first job is to fly and lastly to communicate, and may very well be too busy to tell you to get out, but you may be changing CG on the pilot.
So what about the jump pilots out there-what's your take on this one?

What an excellent thread topic, Mar!

For those who don't know, Dan B.C. is one of the best skydivers of all time, as well as a kind, inspiring coach/friend to many. In '91, B.C. was in a plane crash that killed many. Dan had a broken neck, skull fractures, collapsed lung, internal injuries, but only seven months later, he competed @ Nationals. Dan B.C. eventually became a multi-world champion & founding father of Airspeed.

**Please promote all that is good in our sport by pre-ordering Dan B.C.'s book. Amazon has the best price: "Playing to Win"

    **To Pre-Order the book:
To the right of your screen, you will see a little shopping cart with **Pre-Order: Add to Cart. Click there to Pre-Order. As Mar mentioned, if there is lots of interest via Pre-Orders in Dan's book meaning that it's a success, this will generate interest among the studios in his story via this movie: http://www.aboveallelsethemovie.com/

That would help to get this movie into the theaters, which would help to promote our sport. There is virtually no better representative of our skydiving community, than Dan Brodsky-Chenfield. Thanks, everyone! :)

Hey Mods-would it be possible to make this one a sticky in general?
