    Corking

I'm looking at trying my hand at sit flying in about 15 more jumps. I always hear the term "cork" or "corking". What is being talked about when a freeflyer "corks"
  2. I'm still a young gun in this sport with only 80 jumps. The only advice i can tell you is jump 2-ways with a coach. You will learn more in 5 jumps with a coach than you will in 20 jumps with another inexperienced jumper, not to mention the added risks. I soloed alot of my jumps and then just asked around the DZ for coached jumps. Sometimes i pay his ride sometimes he pays his ride but i have learned a HUGE amount in the last 10 2-way and 3-way jumps. Think of it this way. How much do you think you will learn with someone who has 500-1000 jumps as opposed to someone who has 50-100 jumps. Get a coach and spend the extra money. What you learn in just a few dives is priceless. I has been for me. Good luck.
  3. I have a J-2 with a Raven Dash-M 181 reserve with a Sabre2 170 main. Packs a little tight but no problems at all. Packers say they never have a problem packing it either.
  4. Had an incident last weekend during a 3 way. Did a 3 way, exit and freefall was fine, tracked at about 3800 then pulled, so i thought. Seems i got the pc half way out and then it slipped right out of my hand. Yelled a quick "oh shit" yelled another "I hope this works" reached back and grabed a handfull of pc and threw out. Thankfully i opend up. Looked at my protrack and said deployment was 2k. I dont know if i just simply didnt grab the hacky hard enough or what. I have heard about a (i believe) monkey fist. Smaller than a hackey but doesnt squeeze down when grabbed. Thinking about wanting one of those monkeys now. Any opinions?
  5. QuoteQuoteBoth Muff and SS have the same sad story that's more and more popular. New divers can't jump with the oldtimers and learn. Thus they are driven to Freeflying since the perception is it has less stress and more acceptable to do solo. (I like freeflying, just think that it shouldn't start until someone is proficient in belly flying - definition of 'proficient' is the next discussion here I'd suppose.) This past weekend i got in touch with a coach at my DZ and talked to him on what i was wanting to learn. Ended up doing three 3-way jumps. Didnt have to pay for anyone else during those jumps but if i want one on one jumps with the coach (2-way) then i pay for his jump. The other 2 on the 3-way were much more experience than me but we had a blast on the jump. Did manage 4 points on the last 3-way.....first for me and i did buy the beer. Bottom line i found a coach, did three 3-way jumps and learned alot in just those three jumps. Looking forward to this weekend.
  6. Seems to me that sit flying in a RW suit with booties would be kinda hard. Think i'm gonna have to go for the FF suit and maybe some FF pants.
  7. Hey Mocha, First of all i dont think anyone who reads your post is gonna just let you quit. Just a couple of weeks ago i put a post in here about my flares because they sucked ass. I got alot of good advice and now am improving. I know how frustrating it can get, bekieve me. I once had an F-111 that i could land good then all of a sudden i couldnt. The parachute was on its last leg. I went to a Sabre2 and was still having problems landing, though not as bad. I'm not gonna give you advice on how to land because i'm still not the greatest at landing and i have less jumps than you. I was doing maybe 30% standups before i put in my post and have had 95% standups since then. Look for my post about page 3 or so and read all the advice i got. I would link it to you but i dont know how. It will help you. We all hope to hear back from you in a couple of weeks to hear about your improved landing. My post is actually on page 7 in the "General Skydiving Discusion". Hope it helps
  8. I'm not a canopy expert, but i think the Spectre would be your best bet for it should have a smaller pack volume. Go to PD's website and you should be able to get the pack volume on all the mains you mentioned. I think the Spectre would be first followed by the Shilhouette then the Sabre2.
  9. Not looking to sit fly just yet but i was wondering is it better to learn to sit fly with baggy clothes or a freefly suit or getting a sit fly suit. It seems to me the sit fly suit would be a good investment to help someone new to learn how to sit fly giving the wings in the arms.
  10. I have moved myself more to freeflying than RW for that reason. I'm learning to sit fly now but i watch alot of skydive videos and now want to get back to RW. I think i worry to much about not doing good on a 2 way or 3 way with more experienced jumpers and making them feel they just wasted a jump. I'm looking to get coaching and then get more involved with the more experienced jumpers after coaching.
  11. Well hell. I've got 69 jumps so i guess i have enough time to get the jumps in for my C license before 9-30.
  12. I did hear about the changes that are going to be made with licenses. I currently have my A license. What are the new requirement going to be for all the licenses.
  13. Ever since i read about jumpers falling out of there harness on deployment because of no or misrouted chest straps i make DAMN SURE mine is routed correctly as well as visually look at other jumpers on the load with me. I check everything probably 7-8 times before each jump just to make sure. Better to be anal than dead.
  14. Thanks for the info guys. I really wasnt sure what the force was on the chest strap on deployment. Having a 1 inch strap just felt different since it was new for me to have it. But now with everyones input it makes me feel alot better with the knowledge now. I appreciate it.
  15. A few months back i purchased a new/used Javelin that has the 1 inch chest strap. I havent had any problems on any of my jumps but sometimes i look at that chest strap and think "Damn thats small" Are there any advantagesdisadvantages to a 1 inch chest strap from a 2 inch chest strap. I've considered replacing it with the 2 inch strap but wanted to get some opinions on the matter first from others that have the 1 inch strap. I sometimes think that little thing is going to snap on me on deployment. I always had the 2 inch prior to this rig so its just a little different for me.
  16. I've hit 218 mph according to my protrack and lets just say its a little more intense than tracking
  17. I dont know if this is the correct place to ask this but does anyone know in speed diving what a competitive speed is for competition?
  18. I've heard alot about Skydive University but havent given the thought about going. Where is it at again? Any idea on cost?
  19. I currently have low jump #'s but i wanted to ask the experienced jumpers what they did to get other to jump with you when you were a newbie to the sport. I have 60+ jumps with only a few 2-way and one 4-way. I jump exclusively at one dz and all the guys/gals there have serious jump #'s and i feel sort of out of place/inexperienced enough to ask if they want to do a 2-way. I really need to practice my docks and then move on from there. I assume the best way to get someone to do a 2-way would would be to pay for their jump but was wondering what other positive ways there are to approach it.
  20. I'm preparing to get my B License and one requiredment is to do a figure 8. I feel stupid not knowing this so pardon the ignorance. What is a figure 8?
  21. The problem i was having was that i all of a sudden couldnt do a stand up landing, constant tumble, late flares. I caught myself last weekend looking straight down at my feet coming in on my landings which all but killed my depth perception, which in turn made me flare way to late, usually just enough to keep me from breaking my legs. The advice i utilized the most was just simply looking forward. Advice on that was to look forward/up 60 degrees from the ground or down 30 degrees from stright in front of you. I did that on my first jump and it worked prefectly. It almost seemed to make me start my flare naturally simply from the greatly increased depth perception. You simply see yourself fly in. Other advice i tried was looking to the side and forward on landing (just make sure your very clear to the front of you) which gave me the same result as looking forward. Last but not least was look forward but have on leg extended out but not locked and the other bent under you. On a little/no wind day as you begin to flare, you feel the ground with your extended foot and you simply add more flare which levels you out till you simply step down. The second and third landings were a little different for me because its a new technique. The best advice is to just remember to look forward. As i came in on final i just wispered to myself "Eyes forward, Eyes forward" and it made all the difference in the world.
  22. Not much to meantions here. I just wanted to give a shout of thanks to all those who responded to my post from last weekend about my crappy landings. I read the replies/advice over and over and applied that advice at the dz today. Did three jumps today and had nice standups on each one. Thanks to all those who gave me excellent advice. It made a big difference. The things you can learn from this site!!!. Thanks.
  23. Not that this means much but i wanted to give a shout of thanks to all those that responded to a post i put on here some time last weekend. Ive been having landing problems my last several jumps and asked for advice. Got a good number of replies/advice. Upon reading over and over the replies i got, i applied that advice on my landings today. Made 3 jumps and nice stand up landings each time. Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my post. It really made a big difference. THANKS.
  24. Looking to get opinions on freefly helmets. Which do you think is the best out there? Hows the fit? How clear is the audible in free fall? The Hurricane looks pretty nice, but then there is the Evo, but then again there are others that look pretty good to. Thanks for the input
  25. Great Reply SSkydiver! First, have some one video your landings, not just one but several. If the problem you are having occurred under both canopies, the common factor is you. Without seeing your landings all of the "experts" can only assume, (and you know what that means), they know what is going on. Find a good canopy pilot at your DZ and have him review your landings. More than likely that will help solve your problem more than these posts. If not, there are several here who would be more than happy to help. Blues, J.E. It all seemed to start about the last 5 jumps on the old main i had and seemed to follow me to this new main now. I'll apply all the things i have learned on this thread and improve my landings. Thanks Coach
