New Royal Caribbean Ships promise an onboard Windtunnel
skycat replied to Maxx's topic in Wind Tunnels
So just got home from the trip, and the tunnel is FAST. I actually had to ask them to turn it down from topped out flying on my head and I can fly topped out in Dallas, Chicago, and Denver just fine. 1 minute of flight time is included with the cruise, but I heard they were doing a few skydiver blocks early in the morning. I'm not sure on that as my husband is with iFly and I flew in the evening after hours with the boys. The tunnel diffuses starting from the net so it does take some getting used to the fact that if you are head down your legs don't have as much power as normal or in a sit the lift on your back feels weak. So I wouldn't say do the cruise for the tunnel, but it is a nice bonus on a ship that has a ton of ammenities and fun things to do. (Flying trapeze anyone) Kelli Fly it like you stole it! -

Nope, Quantum of the Sea and Anthem of the Sea are the 1st ships with tunnels. Although on this ship there is a capsule that swings out over the sea called the North Star. So maybe it's the same ship. Fly it like you stole it! -

Derek is over in German commissioning it right now, I'll ask him if he has any details I can share the next time he is online, although it's still 2 months to the maiden voyage so things could change by then. It sounds like there will be a limit on the free flight time. Fly it like you stole it! -

Quantum of the Sea is the 1st ship with the tunnel, Anthem of the Sea will go into service next year. The wind speeds should be capable for head down, but I think the instructor level will be the issue with what you can or can't do. The other unknown will be the movement of the ship and what conditions the tunnel can and can not operate. http://www.meyerwerft.de/en/meyerwerft_de/werft/das_unternehmen/webcam/webcam.jsp There is also going to be circus school and flying trapezes ...WEEEE!!! My husband works for ifly and I can use his flight time. So I could never break even, everything about the trip is more expensive than driving 20 minutes to Ifly Denver. For me the point of the cruise is not a ton of flight time but a vacation where I can do a few days in London then do a trans-Atlantic cruise which really seems like an experience. So I was just wondering if anyone else was going as it would be cool to meet some new people. Fly it like you stole it! -

They are balancing the fans in Rosemont on Monday, commissioning will be soon after that. I will post when DV tells me the fans are turning, but it is very soon. I think they are shooting for a mid-may opening date. Fly it like you stole it!

Yippee! Any projected completion date? Not yet once ground breaks DV will have a better idea, but my guess would be sometime between oct-dec. Yes there will be 2 tunnels in Houston, the 2nd one will be up north in the woodlands area I believe. Fly it like you stole it!

If you needed a little Tuesday pick me up in Toronto.....the fans are now turning. :) Fly it like you stole it!

No idea about contracts anymore, but I do know at the end of 4 weeks, all you will be is a Level 1 instructor. They don't teach you how to free fly in the FITP they teach you how to take first time flyer classes. Go ahead throw a temper tantrum and leave, it's a small industry odds are the next tunnel you wanted to work at would call your previous employer and they would tell them about your performance. So it's actually in your best interest to stick it out a few years, get your ratings up, odds are they train you up based on seniority and performance. Check out the IBA site, the information you need on what it takes to get what rating is there. http://tunnelflight.com/pages/instructors/instRatings.php Fly it like you stole it!
