  1. Hey Newbie - There are many reasons to explain the trend of tighter fitting FF suits. But what I believe to be one of the main reasons is that people are becoming better freeflyers and require less drag, due to the improvement of their individual skills, i.e. getting their legs out. Yes, thicker or multiple layers of material will give more drag but even bigger guys like me, (230lbs exit weight) jump a relatively tight Matter suit, I can slow my HD fall rate to under 140mph, if I care to do so. Baggy suits have their place for new Freeflyers learning how to control their fall rate, because they haven't learned how to fly their body efficiently enough yet. When learning HD, there are so many things going on, that a person gets overwhelmed with the little things required to fly efficiently. One of the things I've notice is that since a person usually can't see their legs in the HD position, they tend to relax more and more as they decend through the jump. Which of course will increase fall rate. One of the things that I suggest to newer FF-ers, is to flex their toes toward their head. This will give you feedback as to where your legs are positioned w/o having to look at them. If you do this and can't feel wind pressure on your toes this usually means your lower legs are in the burble of your thighs reducing almost half of the drag you have available. So, unless you are under 160 lbs or so, you may need more drag until your technique improves and become second nature. Once you improve you technique wearing a baggy suit, you should then be able to notice how well you can control your fall rate range. After that, you will need to reduce the drag you fly with or your suit will begin to "fly" you, making slot flying more difficult. This is due to small lateral movements caused by the extra drag, that hinder a tight neutral HD position, i.e. little random "pushes" a few inches here or there become quite noticable and annoying. Eventually, you should be able to control your fall rate by either extending your toes for speed or flexing your feet to slow The other reason, simply stated is Fashion.

  4. I think Pat Works might qualify, I think he turns 40 this week.
  5. I like the beanbags for entry gates.
  6. Good rule of Thumb: If the canopy is flying faster than you can run, you should continue to fly the canopy, until it either slows down enough, or learn to run faster. Also, make sure you are completely flaring your canopy, and make sure your brake settings are correct. I would highly recommend doing a few clear and pulls, (high pull) with a plan, and really learn how to fly your canopy and find out it's limits. Solo's to start with and then maybe a few 2-3 ways. Also, at least every 50-100 jumps, I train an all rear riser landing, as an emergency procedure, in case I have a problem with my main canopy's control lines and I'm too low to use my reserve.

  8. Thanx for your kind words. That is a true story though, not a joke, I found in on AP. Oh, I made up the team name thing though. Hopefully we'll see you and JJ again this year. Big Ways coming soon. I'm still undecided, I'm waiting for my wallet to tell it's okay to participate. CPC is keeping me quite busy now. Hope to see ya'll here soon, and make some skyjumps with you, til then... Curt
  9. Click open the Picture below first: Norwegian Kjell Petter Bruun practicing Tree-Ski-Jumping somewhere in southern Norway. The unofficial Norwegian Tree-Ski-Jumping Championships are, hopefully, being organized for the second time in the Hallingskarvet wilderness area, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Oslo, Saturday, March 5, 2005. The jumpers will be aiming for the trees and the higher they land in the trees, the better their scores may be. The idea is to take flight from a mound of snow, fly through the air and land in a tree. To qualify as a completed jump, the skier has to hang onto the tree without falling to the ground. Kjell Petter Bruun is the team captain of the newly formed Norgy team, "Team Ultra-Extremely Xtreme Ski"

  11. Why apologize to Chris? You ain't a true swooper until you've gone through your lines as you skip across the pond, right? So, he's got that going for him. Did he get red-carded from that splash-down? I didn't know that, if he did.
  12. It's Chris Day from Canada, I think, that is his canopy. I watched him really improve during the training and competition while at FSC. And, I did see this chow, oh well no one's perfect....Looks like a nice heaDzDown daffy in the one where his foot has snagged the lines. Nice job!

  17. Not yet, not sure what's happening with AZ. No organizers have stepped forward. I think someone at Eloy might be looking at running a district there, but haven't heard anything for sure yet. SoCal is the closest district for people in AZ who want to compete for now. If you are interested in organizing, email Jim and see what's up. Curt Canopy Piloting
  18. No, but you have to compete in at least 4 of the 5 competitions in the region where you initially registered, to be eligible for one of the 5 slots each region may send to the CPC Championships in Oct 2005. After 2005, finishing in the top 10 at the CPC Championships will be the only way to advance to the Pro class in the CPC/PST. There was a meeting during the WCCP and the subject was how to make it fair for everyone, if people want to compete in more than one area and in more than 5 competitions. The solution was to allow people to compete as much as they can, but they must compete in 4 of the 5 regional competitions where they are registered. For score consideration outside their region, the competitors first competition score made outside of their region will be the only score accepted as their 5th score, if the competitor only has 4 regional competition scores at the end of the regular season. Any regular season competitions after your 5th, you must still pay your registration, but for the remainder of the season you will compete as a guest. Understand as a guest, you are not eligible for CPC points from that competition, but you will gain more competition experience. I will check with Jim Slaton and get confirmation or any corrections to what I wrote. There may be some deviation from this, but generally I think this is what was decided on.

  20. SoCal Canopy Pilots Hi, my name is Curt Swanson and I want to touch base with any competitive canopy pilots in the SoCal area. If you weren't aware, there is great news for pilots needing more from their canopy piloting experience this year. The newly formed Canopy Piloting Circuit (CPC) will deliver more emphasis on education and training, as well as more competitions to challenge your skills in ‘Oh~5. Each State (CONUS), which participates in canopy piloting, is assigned a district organizer(s). The organizer is responsible for presenting competitions within the district throughout the CP season. For the SoCal district, I will head that duty up this year and will do my best to make good things happen. I may even need a bit of help, so if you are interested…contact me. The CPC season will begin on 1 Jan and end 15 Oct. There are to be 5 CPC events during this time. This schedule and additional info will be posted here soon, if you need anything else, email me. If you are interested in improving your piloting technique and safety with 5 competitions thrown in this year, please send me an email with the following information. -Name -Home phone -Cell phone -Email address -Home DZ -Total# of HP landings (HPL) -HPL’s in last 3 months -Canopy model -Canopy size If you are interested in becoming a competition judge/course layout engineer, please send me an email with the following information. -Name -Home phone -Cell phone -Email address -Home DZ -Are you now or have you ever been a CP judge? Thanks for your time and safe swoops, Curt Swanson [email protected] - Please be sure to include, “CPC2005”, in the subject line, thanks again.
