This is something that a great majority of people do (at least here in the UK). Most people I know here who have Kazaa listen to the tracks once, and if they it, they almost always buy the CD, since mp3 files can be of crappy quality, depending on how they were encoded in the first place. In this case Kazaa can be of benefit, because CD's could be bought on the basis of someone hearing a track which wasn't released as a single, therefore there may not be a sale otherwise. I think the slowdown in the profits of the music industry is due in no small part to the fact that CD's are generally overpriced, and artists aren't forced to release music of a standard that was expected in previous decades. Artists have become living legends, and no-one will tell them that what they've just released is a pile of crap, so it gets put out, people hear this, and simply download the one or two tracks out of fourteen which are any good. Soooooo, I'm graduating in about 3 months, and let's just say the future ain't exactly looking bright. My employment record sucks, mainly due to a lack of jobs where I live, and not being able to move, so no-one is going to give me a job without experience, and I can't get experience without having a job. However, the armed forces would take me instantly. It's something I've always had as a backup plan, if only for a few years. I was in the cadets for a year while at school, but it was a total mickey mouse operation which bore no similarity to what actually happens in the forces, so the fact that I didn't stay doesn't really say anything about my suitability for life in the forces (for the record, I did everything I was asked to do, the instant I was asked to do it). If I were to join up, it would be in either the Paras or the Royal Marines (family and friends in these Regiments, so these were just natural choices). I know training and selection are hard, but I've never given up on anything in my life, and would be dissatisfied if I ended up in a regiment that wasn't one of the two above. Obviously I have no desire to take another person's life, but will do so if my life, or the life of comrades or civilians is at risk. Some have said that armed service is just not right for someone who is essentially anti-war, but I figure better that than a bloodthirsty maniac, right? Just want to get opinions from those who have served/are serving/are thinking about joining up. FYI this war in particular has no bearing on my decision, or the timing of this post. There is something of a grey area here, and this relates to threads about Iraqis in civvies being treated as spies. Technically, you can be executed if bearing arms in civilian clothes, but if you are in your own country which has been invaded, you could argue that at the time you are a private citizen exercising your right to bear arms. Also, as long as you have pledged allegiance to a state or a military force you don't actually need to wear a uniform, hence most Iraqi soldiers not wearing a proper prescibed uniform. I'm not from the US - could someone enlighten me on what conscientious objector status is, exactly? And how you go about acheiving it? I don't know if we have anything that is directly comparable in the UK (we probably do).
