My dealer said that the throttle body should be cleaned after starting a job to replace the mass airflow sensor, saying that it is dirty and will contribute greatly to the early failure of the replacement sensor.

It doesn't seem that the condition of the throttle body could be related to the sensor, as the sensor is upstream of the throttle body. So, what do you think?

Would that carry 30 jumpers? Cargo is 6,000 lbs

I think that kind of rating also assumes a fuel load much higher than would be required of a jump operation, so more of the total weight can be jumpers and still comply with operational limits.

modern day dc3...except could it carry ~47?

The turbo Otter would be a more practical choice. Maybe not a lot of single otters are still around? Or maybe there are some with the original piston engines gathering dust, awaiting conversion? The high horizontal stabilizer is nice, but of course the taildragger configuration is troublesome for insurance cost and pilot skill required.

When a wing is flying at high angles of attack (such as during a flared landing), it is very important that the airflow over the top of the wing stay "attached"/not separate from the surface of the wing.
Is this what they call the boundary layer?

It is a part of the overall subject, having the boundary layer stay "attached" to keep it generating more lift until the critical angle/angle of attack when it doesn't stay attached which is when the wing is considered to have stalled.

We all know that F111-type material is only good for a certain number of jumps before its porosity exceeds 12 CFM and good flares and soft landings become problematic.
But what about hybrid canopies with ZP upper skins and F111 elsewhere?
Because of the F111 component, do those canopies have a life expectancy as well? The ZP will hold up, the F111 won't, so overall how will the canopy perform once the F111 part of it wears out?
    Thanks.

I think that using non-zero porosity fabric on the lower skin does not result in lower performance over time.

When a wing is flying at high angles of attack (such as during a flared landing), it is very important that the airflow over the top of the wing stay "attached"/not separate from the surface of the wing. If air is leaking out through the top skin fabric too much, then I think it has the effect of separating the airflow. Conditions on the bottom skin of the wing are very different, with separation not being an issue, so leakage through non-ZP fabric on the bottom doesn't matter.

If it was possible to actually suck air into the wing through/from the top skin, then you get the ability to produce good lift at even higher angles of attack, as the airflow stays attached when it otherwise would not. This has been done on some experimental airplanes, including a Boeing 757 testbed that had part of the wing drilled with very tiny holes and a vacuum applied to suck air into the wing. So, air leaking out through the fabric matters a lot for the top skin, but not for the bottom, as long as it is not so much that cell pressurization suffers.

That's my theory on why non zp is being applied on bottom skins, and I think it makes sense. In my previous life I was a mechanical design engineer, even did such for the Boeing company.

During the course it took two wraps on the lines and a long hold at full flare to stall it. I had my rigger shorten them by 2 inches.

If you need 2 wraps to be able to stall it, I'd think you needed to shorten it by more than 2 in. Gotta analyze it properly.

About 3-4 in shorter was needed for mine. Grabbing the top of the toggle instead of inside the loop (bottom of the toggle) allows for more total stroke length and made a big difference on my Pilot 210

But if the head wind is about the same as your canopy speed, you can make progress by crabbing.

    That would not work.

I recall a news item on that helmet about a month or so ago on NBC News.

At that time IIRC is was a 'one & done.'

If what was being discussed was a motorcycle helmet, that would be reasonable. For a football helmet, that doesn't seem likely.

  9. Be careful, as daisy chains can get locked up more easily than you might think.

I learned that when I used daisy chains to shorten the long bridle on my old parafoil that had a long pilot chute controlled reefing bridle. It locked up and would not go through the grommet on the canopy.

  10. I think the design is lousy, but it does bring up an issue worth discussing - the desire to have the pin stay put until we want it to move. Main closing pins usually behave, but not always. A curved pin could have a similar design as this coffin nail, or there can be other ways, perhaps thought of "external" to the pin that can improve pin security. What matters is properly identifying that there is in fact a problem worth fixing, and how to improve it without causing other problems.

  11. Did the guidelines change in the last several years?

I did a 24k AGL jump at the '06 WFFC from Mullins. We had a proper mask system to use on the plane only. I would be surprised to find out we weren't doing things per guidelines/requirements.

  12. If you still have the original d-bag, then you can eliminate a possibility by going back to it.

Even though you have been using the new bag for a long time, maybe something has changed about it and is allowing early dump of the canopy.

I'n the case of a complete malfunction (you pull your pilot chute but you get a bag lock, or pilot chute in tow) shoulf you pull your cut away handle and then pull your reserve? Or just pull your reserve?

A bag lock always calls for a cutaway. No controversy.

A total malfunctions (can't find or pull the main) does not call for a cutaway. No/very little controversy.

As you move past being a newb, it is OK to know that a PC in tow is where there is some controversy about whether cutting away first is best. Lots of threads that focus on this. Don't believe those that claim only one side of the argument has any advantages. Understand fully what is being claimed before deciding which side to come down on, or that a particular person's good result proves their position.

  17. They have some value, I would guess 2-400 total. Go ahead and sell them in the classifieds. They aren't right for newbies to buy, but there will probably be somebody that wants them for appropriate use. You never know if for instance someone is trying to put a rig for water jumps together, this would be perfect, and getting it packed is on the person buying it to negotiate.

I really need a solution for these retarded dangerous forward exits. Do you guys have advises for this issue?

Maybe try closing your eyes just before getting out. Just feel the wind and fly that. Keep eyes closed for several seconds. Of course it would be best if an instructor or someone appropriately experienced, or you makes sure that there is no conflict with other groups. I think it would be important to have a very positive image of how it will go.

    Here's an alternate solution:

Your son turns in the car at the end of lease like normal.

You then negotiate a completely separate transaction to buy the car.

I mention this because residual value buyouts for leases tend to be shitty deals for the buyer.

Like the other guy said, knowing what they will get paid at auction is your price point.

Oh, and keep everything separate. I mean you walk in an hour later and say 'hey I saw that guy just drop off a blank. Is it for sale?'

The residual value for the 2015 Civic LX 4-door is 11,800. I think this is an attractive price, and definitely less than they would advertise for such a model year civic after it went through their process. I also like the idea of knowing the history of the car, how it was treated, etc.

  20. I'm figuring that the lease agreement specifically does not allow it, but that it doesn't actually limit what is allowed by state law. I think I've found an authoritative source that says it can be done, as long as you get the 3rd party buyout arranged beforehand (questions 715)

  21. Before I ask the dealer's finance people, I was hoping someone with actual knowledge of what is possible could educate me.

The situation is that I'd like to buy (with a loan) my son's leased car (Honda) when it comes available-as he turns it in at the end of the lease. I'd of course like to buy it at the residual value per the contract. Simple enough it sounds but I want to buy it without my son actually having to buy it first, my thought is that we'd have to pay sales tax twice if I buy it after my son buys it.

Am I correct that the dealership can't allow my son's lease car to be "bought out" at the end of the lease by anyone but the leasee, and so therefore I'd be paying sales tax twice? Maybe I'm not even realizing what other cost I'm trying to avoid, but I hope someone knowledgeable can help me get my plan settled before I ask the dealership about it. Of course I realize this would not be an issue if I used cash instead.

    Thanks for your help.
