  1. Well its nice to meet you, asshole, I'm Chris. Sorry if I come off as a humorless jerkoff, I'm just fucking bitter right now about not being able to jump.
  2. This is a discussion forum, where we talk about our past experiences and help each other out if we have questions. Its the internet, and while we should take everything we read with a grain of salt, it doesn't hurt to ask other skydivers who have probably suffered similar injuries. If my post bothers you, or if you find it stupid, you can just ignore it and go on with your life. You make some rather good and intelligent points, you don't have to come across as a dick while doing it.
  3. I went to a chiropractor last year, 24 treatments was what they signed me up for....naively I accepted (private healthcare was paying)...now a year down the line my back is in a worse state than it was when I first went to them, along the way I kept telling them it was getting worse, their stock answer was 'keep coming back and we'll fix it'. I wish now I hadn't even started. I'd recommend x-ray, then see what the doc says. If he recommends physio take it. I wish that's what I had done. Sorry to hear that, is your back better now at least?
  4. lol thanks for the tip, but if you haven't noticed in my post I am actually asking what kind of medical professional I should visit for this issue. Not asking for advice on how to fix it. I have heard absolute horror stories from chiropractors... yet just about everyone recommends them. I called a few places and they were already signing me up or multiple visits before they even knew what my problem is.
  5. my last jump at the dz turned out to be a hard opening... now anytime I go into an arch position, my lower back hurts and it doesn't seem to be getting better.... (sitting 8 hours a day at work does not help either) I really want to go back to the DZ this weekend I already skipped last week because of my back. anyone who's had this problem... what do you recommend? chiropractor? orthopedic? physical therapist? Never had previous back injuries or anything, this kinda blows..
  6. I had John and Joey. And thanks for the tips, fat tire it is lol. My lower back is still busted from that hard opening, but I'm gonna try to make it this weekend and on Memorial day if its open.
  7. I feel bad for that kid. That picture is going to haunt him for he rest of his life...
  8. I can't decide on the politics behind this. Given that it is a rough 50/50 proposition and does not correspond to the 50/50 support for the parties, it doesn't seem beneficial to take this stance right now. I wonder if Biden forced his hand. It seems more like political courage than expediency, which is unusual for Obama. Just look at how long it took with DADT. The political angle that could exist here is that he's shoring up the gay vote that might have declined to participate in November. But it could easily cost him as many black votes or other Christian Democrats. He is trying to appeal to the liberal voters, whom are nothing but disappointed in him by his unfulfilled promises for the past 4 years. And those on the right will vote against him regardless of his stance on gay marriage, I don't see how this could hurt him. A lot of the people on the left are disappointed in Obama, and are unmotivated to vote. And those poll numbers? The election is months away and numbers really don't mean shit right now, anything could happen. He needs to wake up his base. The interesting thing about this election is that both candidates are generally seen as weak people who don't deliver. People just don't like Romney and see straight through his bullshit, while Obama is nothing but utter dissapointment.
  9. Didja even bother to read it? Yes, 6 hours ago. Forgot about the "massive heart attack" part.
  10. Yup, because people just 'wake up' from heart attack/strokes. oh, i thought we were just talking about the pilot just passing out...
  11. On another note, I'm sure we could fly the plane around 40 minutes until he wakes up.... /thread
  12. now thats just fucking evil. but i couldnt help but laugh. if the pilot passes out? I don't know how to land a plane, but I know how to make it gain altitude.... ill go up as high as I can, then bail with the pilot.
  13. Looks great! congrats! how much did it cost altogether?
  14. yes Maybe There is... but unlikely to be the issue during opening. Personally - kinda one each Alti-III and Alti-track. but to answer the question I think you're asking they both have analog face, don't care for digital numbers, As soon as you are sure you're going to stay with it. Was once... long ago Was that too... but its been a few years, I'm a bit older than that... Yep, after about 2 years (~1/2 of that on my own rig), but that was 20 years ago... yea, but I've had my 'D' for long enough that I don't remember the number... its around here somewhere... Ok, now a question near/dear to my heart... They told me the same thing when I went to buy my own rig. (~220-lbs at the time) Despite the insistance, I bought a new PD-260 9-cell (mind you it was the older F-111 non-ZP fabric) And they were right... after only 10 years and ~600 jumps I started getting bored with it. Now, after 22 years (and gaining a little weight) I've down sized all the way to a 210. Get what YOU are comfortable with as long as it is no more agressive than what you instructors feel you're ready for. Yes, if you buy new, there will be a certain amount of investment loss if you sell soon, but for me there was the reassurance that, in a sport where I did not know allot about gear, I knew the history/condition of the gear from day 1. YES. Yes. First, it will provide a more consistant flight behaviour as you are learning, and as a new jumper, it will help when you land places you didn't plan to... (got drug down the taxi way ~jump #30 very short before I got it collapsed... found holes in both layers of the cordura knees and my jeans, but not in my skin...) rare, but can happen... mostly if the pilot 'chute gets in front and wraps on the lines. videos, I'm sure... just don't have links right now. NOT a reason not to do so (high, clear your airspace, expecially below) just something to keep in mind. Ayinger Altbairisch Dark (cold) I think I owe you more than one beer, thanks for the answers, cheers!
  15. I'm actually in Taft, probably gonna try and stick there for a while until I get my A. Not sure about the other DZ's but I feel at home there, everyone is really chill and helpful. I'll definitely make a trip to Perris though, especially if I can try out some gear over there... wasn't aware of that. My only problem with getting new gear, and jumpsuits is that I'm probably gonna mess up the equipment on landing at least a couple of times, since I am still new...
  16. haha, ya ull get a beer. I can always rent a rig, leave, unpack it, and walk back in.
  17. sorry, I meant at like 4000 feet, not right before landing. Student gear should not with normal "use" stall. But if you force it to stall, meaning pulling the steeringtoggles down to your feet or so, the canopy will inflate again once you lift the toggles. This video shows a stall, and moving past the stall, making the canopy fly backwards (DO NOT DO THIS!). The canopy used is much more stable in a stall than the average skydiving canopy. And you see when I lift the toggles, the canopy surges forward, and almost "hits" the horizon. That means the canopy is flying down, as in vertically down, for a brief moment. A few seconds later my body swings under the canopy again and we return to normal flight. The reinflation from stall to "open wing" might be a tad quicker on this canopy compared to a normal skydive canopy, but not that much. So, short answer, no problem if you do it at 4000 feet. But below 300 feet, your pushing your luck. http://youtu.be/1twC8F2ptmU Ya, i was holding the stall and put the toggles back up immediately after I felt the free fall. I can assure you I would not dare to try that below 2k... If anything my problem with landings right now is flaring too slow/ too late.
  18. Exactly how much in control do you think you are going 120 mph on a bike? All it takes is one false slip, an oil spill, or even a split second of bad judgement which even the most talented people in the sport make. I know a man who was a very safe rider, and he got knocked off and killed on the freeway by a dumbass driver. I'm not trying to scare you about riding a bike, just saying, are you ever really completely in control of any situation? To be honest, you are much more in control on a roller coaster. The odds of something going wrong or dying on a roller coaster are as close to 0 as it gets... I can feel very comfortable saying I can ride roller coasters 10,000 times without ever getting injured. I can't say the same about most other activities. Maybe you should take a look at your fears and understand that they might not be necessarily related to the level of danger you are in, but rather some kind of phobia? For what its worth, here is my story. I couldn't get myself to climb up a 40 foot ladder last year at work. I ended up checking on the work being done from a roof higher up above (I'm an engineer). I hated myself for it, I spoke to one of the painters, who is a very humble older man, and he made it simple, he said: "its easy to be scared, just focus on what you are supposed to do and do it". He didn't pressure me to do it or not do it, and I went up the ladder. Once I was on the roof, there was only one way down. I took his advice to heart and focused. Coming down the ladder I felt like I a beast, beating my fear of heights for the first time, the feeling was great, I even got a rush from it. I became obsessed with heights, I look down cliffs and high places at any opportunity i get, which is also how I ended up jumping out of planes... bungee jump is next. Little did I know what I feared the most in my life ended up being my most enjoyable experience.
  19. if you adjust your container to be too loose, can that cause lower back pains upon deployment? or did I have a hard opening? As much as I try to and remember what the hell actually happened, I can't. I had just readjusted my leg straps because my right leg got numb on my AFF5 canopy portion... on my AFF6 after all the adjustments, I jumped, upon deployment I felt my back just curving inwards like a mofo, and I landed with a sore back =/ . At least I passed my AFF's, but I'd like to know if I made a mistake before deployment, maybe too much arching? (if there is such a thing). Electronic alti or analog? When should one start looking for a rig? 30? 40? 50 jumps? B-license? I weight 195 lbs, 6 ft tall. I'm thinking of sticking to 230 for rentals and my first rig, however some people, including instructors, recommended I buy 210 or 190. I'm a little confused because that's slightly below the 1:1 people recommend here... does that rule matter less the heavier you get or something? Should I get a brand new container? just so that it fits me perfectly? Hot summer southern california weather is coming up... should I even bother getting a jumpsuit? If I hold my flare too long, (edit: at high altitudes) the canopy collapses, what are the odds that it doesn't recover from the collapse? are there any videos of that happening? what kind of beer do you like?
  20. I sell a lot of stuff on craigslist, and I always leave the ad up even if I make the sale. I can't tell you how many times I have hated myself for giving to lower offers, only to be offered the listed price a couple of days later. Unless your prices are off, be patient, someone will come.
  21. I couldn't agree more. If the discourse on speaker’s corner offends you, I would recommend you stay in college and get a PHD so you won’t have to deal with the real world. If not put your big boy pants on and sack up. I can assure you I was not offended. I'm not sure what to make of the advice you gave me as I don't understand how a PHD keeps me from dealing with the real world... That being said, I don't necessarily agree or disagree with the initial point you were trying to make, and I happen to be quite conservative on some issues... its just that citing a blog, followed by an offensive comment, is not going to help you prove your point. That's like me walking in a church, and telling everyone in there "there is no god, this blog presented here proves it! you right-wingers are always wrong!". Catch my drift?
  22. Was this part necessary? New to SC? Been lurking here and there. Well welcome then As for whats necessary? Dont ask You most likly dont want to know if you are going to stick around a while Anyway Have fun
