recommending a system

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, Im looking for recommendations on building an editing system for the dz. We're finally ready to go from linear AVE 5 to a computer based system especially with the death of many tape cameras. My computer savvy ends at checking e-mail and MS word so try to keep the phraseology basic.

Looking to use sony cx7 HD cameras and leaning towards Vegas. Would also like reasonably fast renders and dvd burning.

So, advice on processors, software, storage, memory, graphic cards etc without going overboard on price would be great.

Quad-core just about anything (off the shelf is OK, just be sure to remove any anti-virus).
Storage? A half-TB/500 GB drive will be plenty of storage for *most* tandem vids over a season, YMMV.
Graphics cards...if you go with Vegas, an old S3 will be fine, but anything faster is a dream.
Be sure the system has two physical drives, not one partitioned drives. One drive is for OS and applications, the other is for storage of media.
2GB RAM minimum, and if you get Windows XP, that's all you can access anyway. Vista can go higher, but it won't significantly improve rendertimes unless you're using a lot of stills.
I like Vegas for skydiving as it doesn't tie up a machine while rendering/editing/Xferring. You can have multiple instances open, so you're editing one vid while another is rendering, while burning a DVD, and on a quad core, you won't see any of the three processes slow down.
