Zoom lenses

Recommended Posts

I know I've read comments on here regarding reasons not to use a zoom lens in freefall, but I can't seem to find any of them now.

I am really close to buying the Canon EF-S 10-22mm. The only two downsides in my mind are the APS-C format, and the reliability of a zoom lens in freefall.

Does anyone have any real-life negative experiences with a zoom lens while skydiving? I understand that in theory the loads encountered during opening shock may not be the best for the lens' mechanical components (although even fixed lenses have a moving focus element). But how much is too much? We're already skydiving with our cameras, which I know whuffo photographers think is foolish in itself.

Who has ruined or worn out a zoom lens after many jumps, or a particularly bad opening?

Who has used zoom lenses for a long time, with success?

Post your stories and advice, please. :)
