Canon 350D (RebelXT) with kit lens users - what shutter and focus modes do you use?

Recommended Posts

hey,
i use the Canon digital RebelXT (350D), still with the kit lens. i used to use it on Tv Mode and 1/500-1/1000 depends on sun at atli, WITH MANUAL FOCUS. the problem is that sometime it gives (depends on precised distance of course) unfocused shots (dahh...).

a friend told me to put it on AutoFocus (I've tried it, was bad) but he just forgot to tell me he uses it with the Sport mode, with that AF...;) well, i'm going to try that one on weekend...

i wonder what modes do other users use in the sky.
let us know about your:
1. Shutter Mode
2. Auto or Manual focus
3. Focus mode (AI Servo etc.) if Auto
4. any other tips will be great.

thanx!

What you need to have when you shoot manual focus, is an idea of what is going to be in focus when you take the shot.

I shoot fully manual usually, for the normal bright sunlight days, I meter the camera on the blue skies or on a gray surface and go with those settings if they look good.

looking good means ok shutterspeed (between 320 and 640) and ok aperture (between 7.1 and 11)

And off I go.. in manual focus, everything is pretty much in focus if I shoot that way.. IF I am in the right spot...

I shoot at ISO 200 by the way..

Honestly.. we keep seeing the same questions 20 times a day, the thing is.. learn about photography before slapping a camera on your head, please.
It doesn't matter what camera you use, what lens, what shutterspeed and what aperture if you don't know what you're doing, you're not going to get the shot.
If you can't fly.. you're not going to get the shot..

Other than that.. there is no "right settings" for any photo.. the right settings are the settings that get you the photo you want..

Let me know if you have any questions and have fun and be safe shooting with your new camera!

thanx for the answer Iwan.
from your avatar pic i see you don't shoot with the kit lens - so what lenses do you use?
now about the learning photography thing ( :| ) actually i think pretty much like you... and i do have some knowledge (from ground mostly) which i'm trying to use at the sky as well, but there are sometimes, when good results can be achieved with those Auto modes, which people (like me) barely believe in or just don't know about their efficiency(not a good thing, by the way), and i still consider myself as a 'newbie' sky photographer... so i just tried to ask here about those methods. that's all... so thanx again for sharing yours.

if you're interested, here is a link to some pics of mine from the sky (click on wanted set out of 3 on the right > click on a pic > use the All Size button) :

and if you'r into photography in general, you might find something in my (mostly ground) gallery here (again, need to get a pic in one of the 4 pages, and then to use the large size option) :

i'd love to hear what you think about those pics...

Dude.. I like your work!!

The aerial shots are nice too by the way.. very nice!

About what lenses I use.. :P he he.. whatever lens gets me the shot I want..

More serious though..

My all time favorite is the Sigma 15mm F2.8 Fisheye
Next is my Canon 20mm

pretty much 99% of my photos is taken with the Sigma 15mm.
