Premier 6.5 & Sony Pc120

Recommended Posts

Hi all
Looking for some help with premier.
premier will allow me to connect my pc120 by firewire
and import video.
but when i try to export back to the camera it tells me the camera doesn't exist.
when the camera is set to vcr the video shows on the lcd.
but if i try recording the output premier just shuts
it off.
got to be a simple explanation to all this.

What is the set up of your PC and your firewire card? (maker of processor, motherboard, things like that) I had to customize settings in the bios to get mine to work with my PC110.

If the video shows on the screen just manually start the record on the camera and press play on the computer.

What I found out, after I had painstakingly put together my first 30 min vid using Ulead Studio 6:
you need an avi file to export video, my mpeg didn't work, and I had no HD space left to create the apparantly much much larger avi file [:/]

In order to export to your camera, yes.

As far as the invisible camera on export system, I agree with Phree. You can spend a bunch of time trying to tweak your system to run the transport and export to your camera, or just manually record. This assumes your camera is set to be a monitor on preview, and you are actually seeing the preview.

Ditto Phree and CAJ. I have Premiere 6.5 on Windows XP SP1 attached to a PC100. After installing the Microsoft "Windows XP fails to enumerate devices in 1394 bus" hot fix allowing my system to see my camera; and remembering to turn off overclocking so the PCI bus is running at the correct speed; Premiere controls and captures from my PC100 fine. But to record back to the camera I play the timeline in Premiere (with a lead in) and at the relevant point manually press Record on the camera.

a little bit more info on this when i play the timeline in premier it plays fine.
and if i have the camera set to vcr i can watch it on the lcd.
if the camera is set to record and i play the timeline.
as soon as i press record on the camera the timeline shuts off.
there is also no output to the lcd when the camera is set to camera and on stand by.
in device manager it shows when the camera is switched to vcr.
and also when switched to camera.
anyone have any ideas
i have spent the last few days going through this
and i thought i'd better post to the forum
and get some good advice before there is a pc
shaped hole in the window.

yes the project is rendered and in vcr mode
on the camera.
if i switch on display i get dv in.
premiere will start the project switch on record
and then it shuts down.
nothing on the tape at all.
it seems to be as soon as the camera goes into record premiere shuts down the timeline.
if i play the project and watch on the lcd fine.
its just as soon as the camera starts to record
premiere shuts off the timeline.
weird thing is i can record the timeline
onto the memory card no problem.
i just need a twenty five gig memory card :)

Are you exporting in the same format you are capturing in?
There is a project preset that should be called "pal dv" or something like that.
Can you capture a clip, place it on the timeline, stretch the wee yellow bar to cover the clip then export without rendering?

yes same format in and out pal dv
tried it with ntsc dv
and same thing happens.
the one thing i found out if i turned the camera on
after loading premiere.
i could import footage in but premiere didn't see the camera for export.
if the camera is turned on first premiere can see the camera for export.
but as soon as the camera starts to record
premiere shuts down the timeline.
haven't tried to export without rendering
not sure if it allows it
but will try

really appreciate all the help from you guys
thanks

Why do I smell a complete reinstall coming up? I had to switch to a 2 partition dual boot setup because Premiere is so damn flakey. On the video editing partition I have Premiere, Photoshop, TMPGEnc, CD & DVD writing software and a few other AV programs. On my main partition I have everything else. I found if I tried to have Premiere on my main partition it just wouldn't work properly.

It sounds to me like you are doing everything about right, as when you play the timeline and you see it in the camera LCD. I hope CAJ or one of the other pro's can offer a fix, but why can I smell a complete reinstall? [:/]

yes thats my next move i think.
i have a 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive.
buffered read time is 50 mb/s
buffered write time is 32 mb/s
thinking of repartioning to give me a 40 gig drive just for video editing.
and then reinstalling premiere on that.
got plenty of time on my hands out of it for at least 6 weeks due to a torn AC ligament in my LH shoulder
so it should all be sorted by the time i start jumping again.
the bummer is my new FFX helmet will be here in the next couple of weeks. [:/]

"i have a 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive."
If you partition it and keep all your apps on one virtual drive, and keep all your footage, choonz, titles, etc on the other partition you may notice some improvements.
Its worth a try and could be a quick fix.

What problems are you having - I have used Partition Magic lots of times.

Some common problems:
1) Ensure that the system partition maintains the same drive letter else it won't boot.
2) Ensure that the boot partition is set to ACTIVE (this option is hidden in the ADVANCED submenu in PM).

yes the partition was set to active and the drive letter remained the same.
partition magic tools imager reported faulty partitions
but partition magic program said they were ok
managed to get all my data back so its ok.
tried a few programs to look at the drive but nothing would touch it everything reported the drive as being
locked by some other disk utility.
it had also overwrote a lot of data with the partions
lucky nothing i didn't have saved on disk.
the scary bit all my stills from skydive algarve
were on the drive and i had deleted them from the memory card.
thank god i managed to get them back.

how are you trying to record to tape? just play the timeline and press the record on your camera ? - if your camera is controled by Premiere (DV Device) then of course if you'll press the record button on your camera the timeline will stop playing - it's as if you pressed the "SPACEBAR" key on your keyboard ...

have you tried "PRINT TO TAPE" ? by doing that you actually let Premiere control the record process - it'll play the movie onto your cam, AND will start the recording process (using the DV device control)...so you only have to sit back and relax

I'm just not following the exact problem in the exact procedure - but for every case there is a final explanation ... hope to help you get to it asap.

the problem is as soon as the camera starts to record the timeline stops.
print to tape where premiere controls the camera is fine until the camera starts to record then the timeline shuts down.
cajones gave me some good advice and i will be
putting it into practice just as soon as my system is all back up and running.
will let you all know how i get on.
