Skydive2 1 #1 December 14, 2002 Hi, I'm not real familar with Vectran Line, and how it wears. I noticed on a friend of mine's velocity (that only has 200 jumps) that in places, the line was basically black from wear. Is this normal? Once the lines are black, are they still good for a while? Thanks in advance Lance
Skydive2 1 #2 December 14, 2002 To be alittle more clear, the blacking of the line starts about one foot up from the connector links, on down. My friend said this is where the slider tends to come down really fast. Is that pretty normal? Lance
RTB 0 #3 December 14, 2002 That vectran lines become black and look pretty worn quickly is normal. You can still use them as long as not a lot of fibers are broken. The black would be mostly oxide from the grommets.
Kirils 1 #4 December 15, 2002 Sounds like the black discoloration is from brass grommets. You won't see it with the SS grommets. Have a rigger look at it just to be on the safe side."Slow down! Jimbo 0 #5 December 15, 2002 I used to be exceptionally paranoid about Vectran line, my rigger pretty much set me straight by showing me Vectran that was pretty much at the end of it's useful life. You'll know, it gets FAT - I mean HUGE like Dacron, and fuzzy, and generally doesn't look like Vectran anymore. The hype about Vectran just breaking without showing any signs of wear is just that, hype. Ask a rigger who has had some experience with Vectran, you'll quickly learn that telling when it needs to be replaced is very easy. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
Watcher 0 #6 December 17, 2002 Stainless Steel Grommets do that, the Velocity comes std with SS. I have blackening on my lines from my SS slider. I actually saw less discoloration from brass (plus the brass goes over the toggels better when stowing. Jonathan
Samurai136 0 #7 December 18, 2002 The brake lines (vectran) on my Samurai have that dis-coloration on the last 12" before the toggles. It's nothing to worry about. Ken"Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
