First 10 way star

Recommended Posts

Hi. I think the first 10 man star was on the cover of the October 1967 Skydiver magazine. Unfortunately, I don't have it so I can't check (it could have be an eight man on the cover, but I don't think so). If I find out differently, I'll repost.

Looks like it was July 2, 1967

Check out:

I didn't even start jumping until over 2 years after that. I really appreciate that I can still hang out and jump with Ray Cottingham, Garth Taggart, Kevin Donnelly.

Makes me feel young.

"Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there."

"Your statement answered your question."

Of the 10 in the first 10 way, it has been my privilege to meet 9 and jump with 6. If you met them at any DZ in the country you would not know they were the fathers of RW. They are unassuming and there just to make a jump. They are the true “Sky gods” of skydiving.

Walt Mercer is still alive and well at Stevensville, Montana. He was our chief jump pilot for Hod Sanders (Silvertip Skydivers), up until about a year ago when Walt developed a heart murmur. He's now grounded. We used to have Walt's plack for the first ten way in our club house.

It's the "shits" to have to get old. If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself....Steve1

Jeff Fischer was just out at Perris visiting Walley. He was on the winning '67 Rumbleseat team and was on Al Krueger's 10-way team for a couple years. Not currently jumping but he sure has a few good stories including a naked jump with a malfunction that my wife followed down.

>Jeff Fischer was just out at Perris visiting Walley.

So was I. That's probably Clark Fisher, although
now I'm feeling a mild uncertainty about the spelling.
Maybe it was Clarke with an "e" and Fischer with a "c",
but that doesn't feel right.

Also maybe that was Jeff somebody-else because
Clark was from Bakersfield and I don't remember
him being on any of Al's teams.

>few good stories including a naked jump with a malfunction
>that my wife followed down.

But that part sounds pretty plausible, although I hope
she wasn't following him too close, he wasn't the highest
puller to ever come down the pike.

Sounds like it might have Jeff Davies.

I just checked with Jim Wallace. He said Jeff Davies was with a team called Poultry Products and that Jeff Fischer was on Al Kruegers team with him. It's nice to work for someone that was around in those days!
I could be wrong on the winning Rumbleseat dates though, I didn't go look at the trophy in the Bombshelter.

Jim has been around for a long time. And he still pumps out a few hundred jumps a year.

Sorry, the file was too big!

From the "4th annual Ten Man Star Championships" program, the "1967 winners" are listed as ...

Brian Williams, John Rinard, Clarice Garrison, Jim Dann, Scratch Garrison, Terry Ward, Jerry Bird, Clark Fischer (note spelling), Bill Newell, and Louie Paproski. Walt Mercer is also shown in the picture as the pilot.
