Two canopies open..

Recommended Posts

Hi people

I am reading the articles in the safety section about double openings, especially this section here:
Quote

If the two canopies are both flying downward towards the ground (called a downplane), jettison the main. Note:Certain reserve static line lanyards may have to be disconnected so as not to foul the reserve parachute when the main is disconnected. Ask your instructor about the specifics concerning your system.

Can somebody please elaborate on what they mean where it says:
***
Note:Certain reserve static line lanyards may have to be disconnected so as not to foul the reserve parachute when the main is disconnected.

How can it fowl the reserve?
thanks very much.

Racer two-sided RSL's MUST be disconnected before cutting away the main; the RSL forms a big loop that can strangle the reserve. Most other RSL's will not cause the same problem, although it's always a good idea to disconnect the RSL before cutting away from a two-out condition (time permitting, of course.) It's just one more thing to foul.

i know someone that had both chutes open during a static line jump..... he forgot about the time delay and pulled his reserve when he thought the main hadnt opened... then the main opened, apparently he had a very soft landing. the instructor told him not to do it again!
