Rental rig

Hi!

when you are on holiday and want to go skydiving, but you don't have your own rig:
Would you rent one from the local DZ anywhere in the world or just at DZ's where you might be sure about the quality/condition of the rented rig?

Like renting a rig in the US vs. renting one in Russia.

Perhaps going to the DZ without the expectation of jumping, expecting to just hang out and visit with people, and then perhaps you'll be surprised at the condition of gear that can be rented/borrowed is a good plan.

The seems like an odd question. The bottom line is that you have to put the rig on and jump it, so perform a gear check and make up your mind on a case by case basis.

Another thing to keep in mind, a DZ that doesn't maintain their rental or student rigs probably doesn't maintain other things, like their airplanes. No rig is going to help you if the plane loses an engine at 1000ft, so evaluate each DZ on a case by case basis, and see if it looks like an organized, well run operation, or one where corners are cut and things are in disrepair.

Easy... I would be extremely happy to recommend renting one at my local DZ in Russia to anyone.. in the words of one of my German skydiving mates with about 400 times your jump numbers "these Russian rigs are extremely well made - just as good (if not better) than any other rig I have seen. And I have probably seen 500,000 jumps in Russia on these rigs with no problems"

I would be less happy to think about renting a rig from a DZ that has a proven track record of failing to maintain aircraft but that offers very cheap jumps (they might also be inclined to cut corners while maintaining rigs).

So I guess it depends very much on the local DZ and their approach to maintaining and replacing their rental gear. Fortunately for those who want to rent a rig, at my DZ in Russia they take these matters very seriously.

in the US, you dont really rent a rig and take it to another dropzone, you rent it from the dz you are jumping at.

Depends. I rented a rig in Hawaii........I only made 1 jump

I'll leave it at that....

I sold my gear and got out of parachuting in 2003 and started jumping again last yea on rental gear in Maruya, Australia. They've got great rental gear and well maintained planes. I was really happy with the rental gear is it was Javelins - same as what my old gear was. I just took delivery of my new Jav so rental no longer an issue.
