Looking for entry-level material about the internet

Recommended Posts

I'm helping to facilitate a seminar for seniors (I'm one...), about all the "stuff" on the internet (e.g. the dark web, bitcoin, social media, smart house). I'm hoping that there are, out there, some non-technical materials (e.g. at the level of an intelligent magazine article about some facet or another) that can help people to do research. Because each person in this seminar is to pick or generate a topic, and then figure out 20 minutes worth of stuff to say about it, enough to engender a discussion afterwards.

Anyone have any good examples? I already have Internet for Dummies, though it's really more of a how-to book. I'm looking more for the contextual material. An example of the kind of thing I'm looking for is "How the Dark Web works" (https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-the-dark-web-works/). Either books, or just articles that impressed you, even if a few years old.

Thanks

Wendy P.

If you don't know much about computers, Paint probably seems like a pretty rudimentary program. The more you use it, the more powerful you realize it is. Here's a pretty good article that tells people how to use it and some of its strengths. Experienced, mature people can see the utility of it if you tell them it's a good way to mark-up, crop, resize, and share pix of their grandchildren. People of that generation love to share pix of their grandprogeny. In fact, if you want to see pix of mine...

Perhaps the most important item of internet discussions should begin with your security while online.

Although this isn't exactly what you requested it may lead you to more helpful articles. Good luck.

Wendy,

This is a new magazine style blog on the subject of cyber security. Entry to a slightly higher level. It covers most things an elderly first timer could absorb in 20 minutes about internet security.

i am putting together a series of presentations on this and other issues commonly faced by non-technical individuals to be given at a local business.  i will share what i have with you when i get it done if you'd like, just pm me an email address.  feel free to use codewv.org, as it is just a website aggregating free learning websites that i host.  the training page has all sorts of good information.  i need to get my guides finished and put up there also.
