Several people died and at least 15 people were hurt on Thursday in a series of terrorist attacks on Israeli targets near the southern city of Eilat.

The first attack was a shooting from a vehicle on Egged bus 392 traveling from Beer Sheva to Eilat, near the community of Netafim.

Shortly after the bus attack, IDF forces engaged in a shootout with the armed men near the scene of incident. Moreover, a second shooting attack took place in which five people were seriously wounded. In addition to the shooting attacks, mortars were fired from the Egyptian border and a bomb was set off on an Israeli army vehicle.

According to reports, the passengers in the car opened fire at the Egged bus, which held many soldiers returning from their bases.

Israeli security forces searched for the suspected vehicle and set up barricades in the area, and once they caught up with the vehicle a shootout between IDF forces and the gunmen erupted.

Recap of the events:
12:00 - A civilian bus is ambushed by three terrorists. 7 wounded. Luckily the driver stayed cool and kept driving and ran away from them.

12:30- First responders Were hit by a series of IEDs, several were wounded.
12:40- Mortar shells on a civilian car. No casualties.
13:30 - attack on another bus. Not clear if a suicide bomber or anti tank missile. Luckily the bus was empty. The driver was killed.
Also an anti tank missile fired on a civilian car, killing 4.

At least 4 missiles fired from Gaza on the port city of Ashdod, 2-3 are intercepted by the new "iron done" defense system.

Total of 8 dead (6 civilians) and dozens of wounded. There seems to have been some intel on this attack and special forces were on alert in the area.
This is a terrible attack but it could have been much much worse.

I'm happy Israel managed to nail those directly responsible right away.

And to those who say Israel should not retaliate, what would you do?

Its not a competition but for fairness sake its also important to note that the IDF have bombed Gazza every night for the last week, for which the most part hasn't been reported. Like I said though its not a pissing contest, I'd be very happy to see no more dead on either side.

When?
Israel hardly attack in Gaza unless rockets fly out of there.
I assume you haven't heard about recent rocket attacks from Gaza...
It's hardly news outside of Israel...

But i agree, its not a contest.

Egypt lodged a formal protest with Israel on Friday over the killings of three members of its security forces during an Israeli raid to hunt down attackers who had killed eight Israelis in south Israel on Thursday.

An Egyptian army officer and two other security men died when Israeli forces launched an operation to pursue militants who had launched attacks on the south Israel border. Seven other security men were injured.

you say 'appeasement' - i say 'vietnam'

are you comparing Hamas to the Vietcong? Quite an insult to the VC, don't you think? Seems also to miss the point that Israel is no S Vietnam and no one there on either side wants a one nation solution.

Well not quite true Kelp... Hamas and Hezbollah do want a one state solution.. Iran would be good with that too.

And DD would be good with it as well.. no more jews there in the middle east stirring up trouble in the Islamic homeland

If anyone needed more proof how absurd and irrelevant the UN is...
Lebanon, a country that is practically ruled by Hezbollah, a terrorist organization of the worst kind is serving on the UN security council...

Lebanon blocked the U.N. Security Council on Friday from condemning a series of terrorist attacks in Israel.
The United States had circulated a draft press statement to the Security Council that would have condemned the attacks by gunmen who crossed into southern Israel from Egypt on Thursday and killed eight Israelis. Israel blamed an armed Palestinian group from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and launched retaliatory airstrikes.

During a closed council meeting, diplomats said Lebanon refused to sign on to the statement, which requires the support of all 15 council nations.

The U.S. deputy ambassador, Rosemary DiCarlo, told reporters afterward that the statement used "standard language on terrorist acts," which the council has adopted many times.

"We think the council needs to speak out on this issue," she said. "We find it regrettable that because of one delegation we couldn't issue that in a timely way."

Israeli U.N. Ambassador Ron Prosor called the Security Council's actions "outrageous," calling it a "sad reminder that the United Nations is too often deaf and blind when it comes to acts of terror committed against the people of Israel."

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. observer, told reporters he sent a letter to the Security Council Friday saying 10 Palestinians had been killed in the retaliatory Israeli action, including two children. In addition, he said, "a large number of civilians have been injured and an electrical generator was destroyed," plunging Gaza into darkness during the holy month of Ramadan.

"Of course we condemn the killing of innocent civilians regardless of where they are," he said.

Mansour said the Palestinians wanted the council to condemn the Israeli attacks in Gaza in the last 24 hours and request an immediate halt.

"It is very unfortunate that the Security Council was unable to reach a common understanding in a balanced way to condemn the killing of all innocent civilians, including those in the Gaza Strip, and to call for the immediate cessation of the intensification of attacks against our people in Gaza," he said.

During the council meeting, Mansour said the issue of Palestinian protests over recent stepped up Israeli settlement-building was raised, especially in East Jerusalem which the Palestinians want as their capital.

"It is unfortunate ... that there was no acceptance of any reaction with regard to the settlement activities," he said.

The United States said on Monday it found reports of new Israeli settlement building plans deeply troubling and counterproductive to the U.S. effort to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

Israel announced on Monday approval for building 277 homes in a West Bank settlement, despite U.S. and international pressure to curb expansion on occupied land and as Palestinians prepare for a statehood bid at the United Nations.

"We have seen reports of this approval for apartments in the West Bank. We consider it deeply troubling," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

"These kinds of actions are counterproductive to the resumption of direct negotiations. We have raised this issue with the Israeli government. We will continue to make our position known."
