Nato to invade Iran?

Recommended Posts

I see a pattern developing. Iraq threatens to stop accepting US $ for oil, Iraq gets invaded. Iran threatens to do the same thing, and sure enough... what a farce!

Interestingly, given the present state of Iraq & Afghanistan, I'm starting to see Iran as the "Schwerpunkt" of the region.

Invading Iran on 2 fronts (3 if you count the "Plucky Kurdish Freedom-Fighters" as a better ally than Turkey) could very well secure stability for the region. UNFORTUNATELY... it's the same sort of stability that Eastern Europe enjoyed under Stalinism!... Or the stability enjoyed by Iran under The Shah!!!

ONLY!... Don't use the "Nuclear WMD" Argument as an excuse; Historically, EVERY leader of a country which has thus far acquired Nuclear Weapons has instantly come to agree 100% with Clauswitz's theories & conditions for war - even if they've never even heard of Clauswitz, let alone read him!

Holy Crab, Mike!

We're not at Harvard (Clausewitz), you know :o

And who, do you think, will know "Schwerpunkt" ????
:P:P

You're soooo serious :P

Let's just have some nice chit-chat about funny things, such like invading, shooting, killing.....

Surely Clausewitz is doing barrel rolls like a propeller in his grave :):) bwahahaha :D:D

Schwerpunkt = focal point

There's one word, a German word, that we haven't yet stolen that should be high on our list of targets: schwerpunkt. It means 'focal point' or 'concentration of effort point' or 'central point of attack.' It's a beautiful word because it expresses an idea that we just don't have in English: the notion that, in any effort, you may have many necessary tasks, but there is one central task that must take precedent.

Um, in military leadership school, it's called "Maintenance of the objective". More syllables, same idea.

What is wrong with "focus"?

Focus (noun):

...

the concentration of attention or energy on something;

maximum clarity or distinctness of an idea;
...

Nothing is "wrong" with focus. Focal point is the translation ofSchwerpunkt.

Give an example of a sentence in English where "focus" (noun) could NOT be used in place of "focal point".

Holy Crab, Mike! ... who, do you think, will know "Schwerpunkt" ????

5 so far... and counting!:D

I think that "Schwerpunkt conveys so much more than "Focal Point". It's also the "Centre of Gravity", "Pivot", "Fulcrum". It nicely describes a concept that's just not available in less than 19 English words.

So... We're stealing "Schwerpunkt"!>:( While we're there, we'll have "Schardenfreude" as well.B|:ph34r:

... Not to mention the "point of main effort" !! And see, we're back on topic B| Now, it quickly should be decided when to send the marines or the allies or or... before this Iranian bastard is giving the command to make a glass covered parking lot out of Dresden :o

Mike (btw):

We still write it Schadenfreude - but feel free to steal and use it as you like (as you already did with "kindergarten") Aaarghh... it's "Kindergarten"! :P B|
How I love those capital letters - they are so different :)

Schwerpunkt: Fulcrum. Not only is it almost a literal translation, but it describes that point or action that'll swing the whole campaign. There's no real literal translation that conveys the concept so succinctly.

Now. on to Schardenfreude (the joy felt on seeing the discomfort of others). Since we've appropriated these words and adopted them as English (call it War Reparations:P), WE'LL decide how they're spelled. You'll just have to change YOUR dictionaries!:)

Invade Iran? Like that is a good idea.

It will make the invasion of Iraq look like a picnic by comparison.<<<<<

Agreed, we need to let Isreal deal with bombing Iranian reactor sights, no invasion, and save our American forces for N.Korea. We are already occuping lands to the east and west of Iran. They can't run far.

Hey now! Still reparations? Need money, Islander? Since our Angela pressed down European payments to your Tony? That's no fine style :S ...

Ya know, my favourite dictionary is Cassell's (as well as the technical version), revised by H. T. Betteridge, formerly senior lecturer in German in the university of Glasgow. You think he would change it? :P

Your PM Scoop was right: Nitpicking :S should end.
Let's decide on Iranian affair, as in our news today I read that GWB's actual opinion polls are quite deep under sea level (of Holland) :P:ph34r:

PS. If Scoop can't keep up with the conversational flow...!:P

Invading Iran will fill the gap between Iraq & Afghanistan nicely. STRICTLY within the reasoning which makes sense of occupying Iraq & Afghanistan, it's the smart and logical thing to do.
