miked10270 0 #27 January 3, 2006 Interestingly, given the present state of Iraq & Afghanistan, I'm starting to see Iran as the "Schwerpunkt" of the region. Invading Iran on 2 fronts (3 if you count the "Plucky Kurdish Freedom-Fighters" as a better ally than Turkey) could very well secure stability for the region. UNFORTUNATELY... it's the same sort of stability that Eastern Europe enjoyed under Stalinism!... Or the stability enjoyed by Iran under The Shah!!! ONLY!... Don't use the "Nuclear WMD" Argument as an excuse; Historically, EVERY leader of a country which has thus far acquired Nuclear Weapons has instantly come to agree 100% with Clauswitz's theories & conditions for war - even if they've never even heard of Clauswitz, let alone read him! ripcord4 0 #29 January 3, 2006 Schwerpunkt = focal point There's one word, a German word, that we haven't yet stolen that should be high on our list of targets: schwerpunkt. It means 'focal point' or 'concentration of effort point' or 'central point of attack.' It's a beautiful word because it expresses an idea that we just don't have in English: the notion that, in any effort, you may have many necessary tasks, but there is one central task that must take precedent. ripcord4 0 #37 January 3, 2006 You are comparing apples to oranges. Schwerpunkt literally translates to "Focal Point". I never said that focus could not be used. The previous poster wanted to know if anyone else knew what schwerpunkt meant.

miked10270 0 #46 January 3, 2006 Schwerpunkt: Fulcrum. Not only is it almost a literal translation, but it describes that point or action that'll swing the whole campaign. There's no real literal translation that conveys the concept so succinctly. Now. on to Schardenfreude (the joy felt on seeing the discomfort of others). Since we've appropriated these words and adopted them as English (call it War Reparations), WE'LL decide how they're spelled. You'll just have to change YOUR dictionaries! Mike.
