looking to buy my first rig

Recommended Posts

Everyone will tell you to buy the same rig they own. Why else would they have bought it.

Size depends on your weight.

Canopy type depends on do you like a 7 cell or 9 cell. Always try to demo before you buy.

Most will tell you unless you are an outside the norm, very tall/very short/super skinny/BIG BOY, buy used because your landing skills may not be the best, so why get your shiney new rig all dirty. Also, new gear takes a big hit on depreciation. Save some money and buy used.
50 donations so far. Give it a try.

You know you want to spank it

Buy used. Jump for a year or two. Sell again.

Rig brand doesn't matter as long as it's one of the major manuf. Fit is more important than brand.

Choose reserve size that's at least as big as the main you are VERY comfortable jumping now.

Choose a main of a type and size you can safely jump now. Too many people have bough a smaller main that ":will be plenty good by the time I jump it" and end up breaking themselves.

For 5k used, you can also get a newer AAD. Get a newer Cypress or Vigil.

Buy used to save money. Use that money to keep jumping and rent gear through that first downsize off of student status. Get an AAD. Ask a rigger to help determine proper fit.

Consider buying a container that is the right size for canopies you will be jumping and sending it to the manufacturer to have the harness replaced to fit you. It costs about $400-500 and still adds up to way less than a new container.
