It's Boogie Season (safety tips)

Recommended Posts

It's boogie season again! Woo hoo!

With all the good that goes along with attending a major boogie - planes, parties and people, sometimes comes some bad. As distasteful as we might find it, it's time for a reminder of some of those possible bad things and the ways we can avoid/prevent them.

1) Drinking -

a)
It can be great fun to get lit with your friends and do stupid things. It's not ever fun to ride in an ambulance or the back of a police car because you did or were nearby when stupid things were done.

If you see a drunken someone getting ready to do something stupid that could result in physical injury to themselves or others - STOP THEM.

b) It's fun to be drunk and get a bit flirty/touchy with the hottie you just met. It's not fun to wake up realizing things went further than you wanted them to and you don't remember it happening.

Don't allow yourself to get so drunk that you can't make rational decisions unless you have prearranged with someone who won't be drinking as much to act as your "party babysitter" for the night.

2) Drugs -

Legal or not, wrong or not, they are out there. If you choose to imbibe, be smart about it. Observe the same rules outlined above for alcohol regardless of what substance you are using. Get it from someone you know. And keep it's usage extremely discreet.

3) Personal Safety -

Hang out in the evenings with a group of people that you know you can trust, even if you aren't drinking - you'll meet plenty of other people but still have the security of having your friends nearby.

Don't go off to be alone with someone you just met without your friends knowing where you're going and who you are with.

Keep your cell phone charged and with you once you start partying.

Women may want to locate your tent near other people that you know and trust.

4) Theft Prevention -

Skydivers are supposed to be one big family, right? Well like any family, there are a few bad apples in ours. Follow the same rules for keeping your stuff safe that you would at any large gathering of people.

If you have a vehicle at the convention, keep your gear and other valuables locked in the trunk at night and during the day when you are not using them.

What else??

This is a MUST so that you can DD people :P

Thanks for the list, it's great and a really good reminder for everyone. :)
I would suggest being careful with your food. It gets really hot so if you bring coolers, make sure to keep them iced. Bad food can ruin your fun really quick.
Life is too short. Don't sweat the small stuff.

I think this needs to be made as a "sticky" in the S&T forum or even here. This is good advice for those of us who are going to attend our FIRST boogies.

Thanks Again Lisa.

Don't forget the skydiving mistakes people make at boogies.

Try to be more aware of your limits at a boogie. People are much more likely to try things at a boogie than they are at their home DZ.

Also, things like bird suits and different parachutes might not be available to your average jupmer at your average small DZ. They get to a place like Rantoul, and they want to do everything they can't do at home. This is an easy way to bounce.

Respect your limits.
