Slink Lifespan

Recommended Posts

Is there a recommended period after which you should replace Slinks? I've had them on my main for a few years and a few hundred jumps. They look good aside from showing dirt that's been picked up over the years, but I'm wondering if they should be changed out every 3 years or ever X-hundred jumps. Is there a recommendation for this?

The only recommendation I have heard is to look to replace them, provided there is no obvious damage that you note, with a new Line set..

Makes sense but for the cost of a Set of "Slinks" (or what ever brand) if your worried by all means change them. I have a set I have been jumping for over 500 jumps and they look fine but I will probably change them at a re-line..

Just my thought....

We change them every line set or as and when wear dictates whichever is the soonest.

.......................................................................

This question was asked on the PIA Riggers' Forum a few months back. Since manufacturers do not publish any specific guidelines, I replied: "Since soft links are made of the same material (usually 1,000 pound Spectra) as main suspension lines, I only expect them to last as long as main suspension lines 300 to 500 jumps.
To reinforce that notion, I always install new soft links when I re-line canopies."

When Slinks are installed on reserves, I expect them to last about as long as reserve canopy: roughly twenty years or twenty deployments.
