Surprises are nice and all that but this is a piece of equipment that the owner has to decide on. 7 or 9 cell, wingloading, shape, even colors are such a personal decision that I don't think you should make it without his input. Especially when you consider the cost. Perhaps think about getting a brand new Cypress (or other brand AAD if he prefers) instead. That is something that some skydivers do without because of cost, even though they might want it. Show him you support his jumping and want him to do it safely. You might get some good advice here, but as was suggested above, talking to your son's instructors or a rigger on his DZ would be the place to get advice you would be safe actually following."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
