extra d ring thingie

Are you talking about the attachment rings for a detachable slider?

ah that explains it (and why i've not come across it). I'll research it some more now. thanks!

hmm - i found a pd article on the rds (http://www.performancedesigns.com/hotnews/RDS/rds.htm), but cant seem to pin down anything on these rings or their function - could someone point me in the right direction please? :)

There are a variety of systems on the market. The best one I've seen and the one I use is the one made by Scott Roberts.

Basically there are loops and cutaway cables on the slider that allow you to fully remove the slider. You can attach your d-bag and PC to the slider, so you can remove all of them in one chunk and stuff them in a pocket or in your shirt. It reduces a LOT of drag from the canopy and is extremely noticeable in the 2+:1 WL range.
