Vinyl Siding.

Recommended Posts

My house was built in the early 40s and has asbestos tile siding on it. We would like to get regular vinyl siding. Does anyone know if we have to remove the old siding? I know with wood you can just put the vinyl over with no worries.

It will be very be difficult to drive the nails through the asbestos to hang the vinyl siding. The vinyl would not hang flat either. Bite the bullet and remove the asbestos. The final product will be much better. It will also give you a chance to put up a new air infiltration barrier under the vinyl. If you don't have insulation in the walls, you can have it blown in from the exterior and the vinyl siding will hide the holes. Both of these will help reduce your heating bills in the winter.

You can reside over asbestos! Not a problem to drive nails through! The only way to do it with no problems is to put 1/2 inch foam board up and to nail it on from the top to the bottom so whatever pieces of asbestos do break off fall out and wont bunch up anyone area(trickoftrade) also the foam board locks down the rest of the asbestos to the wall! My opinion is whey spend the addition money to have it removed and if you do have it removed because of wood decking issues??? You do not need a special license because it is fibercement board (NO SUITS OR RESPERATORS!Only a dumpster lined by 30 mill plastic ! Should only be 200.00 to 300. differance in price for asbestos to be carted away! PM me if you need anymore info>

Thanks! I was worried the asbestos would be to brittle to drive nails into. :S

Now the next question. Will I have to get someone with a special licensing to remove the asbestos? hmm....

Here in OZ it's considered to be a hazardous material and must be removed by licensed specialists

Johnie, I agree it *can* be done, but not the best idea. It is easy to remove the asbestos tiles and it gets the asbestos fibers out of the area. The average home owner can do it. Just make sure you follow local requirements on removal and disposal. If you use blue board insulation over the top of the tiles, it adds 1/2" plus the thickness of the new vinyl siding. Depending on the projection of the trim around the windows and doors, new trim/brick mold may have to be added. That is a lot more work and money then just ripping off the old tiles. Once the tiles are off, the surface underneath is flat and firm. Not bouncy foam over loose tiles. The final product will be much better. I go by the rule if you are going to do it, do it right.

YMMV
