Online Poker

Recommended Posts

two key things not really covered here..

Position (position position position position).. cant say that enough really..it and the prior action determines what you should play when (so much is circumstantial in poker, which is why there are so many seemingly successful playstyles)

and relative stack sizes.. people will play hands that are 'cheap to them' even if they are weaker cards than they might otherwise.... (this is the fundamental level to successful bluffs)

it matters far more in tournaments where what you have is what you have and you cant just go sit at another table..

online is fun for kicks and learning some basic strat, but there are some serious flaws in it as well (particularly the real lack of physical indicators to read your opponent)

edit to add i fairly regularly take anywhere between 100-500 when I and a few friends go sit in live games with construction workers blowing their paychecks in local casinos...observing your opponents is a key skill you cant develop (well) from online gaming.

Hey I am digging up my old thread since I have been playing now for a while and I definitely get better (won a couple Sit n Go, made it into a Sunday 100k by playing a satelite yesterday and fell out as 16000 (out of 20k) after going all in with a straight from the ace and losing to a full house). Now that I'm really getting into it I need a few books. What are the top books to read? I looked up Super System but that's from 1976. Is it still up to date?

I had the weirdest game a few nights ago. I wasn't getting any hands or winning with the good hands and just sitting there with about $1100 in chips, then my wife said she was going to bed, and since the computer's in there I would have to shut down since she can't fall asleep with the glow from the monitor there.

So I announce to the players at the game that I have to go and to take me out. I get 2 3 offsuit. I announce what I've got. Flop came out 9 J 5 or something like that. I raise 100, 2 others call. Turn comes out 8, I raise 200, same 2 players call. After the river which was an ace, I said again that I have 2 3 offsuit and if one of you has a better hand to go ahead and call me, then I hit all-in. They both folded. :D:D:D

I showed my hand to say I wasn't lying. The other players were laughing. I announce my pocket cards next hand J 8, hit pair of 8s so I check, other guy raises 300 I call, thinking he has a J. Another J shows on the turn so I hit all-in and he calls, but I got an 8 on the river for a full house over his trip Js and all of a sudden I'm the chip leader!

Goddamn... I couldn't get anything going when I was trying to win, and now I'm trying to lose and I can't lose! :D:D:D:D

I ended up winning the next hand knocking out the short stack, so I said fuck it, I'll just sit out the rest of the way.

Left the computer on but turned the monitor off and went to the living room. 10 minutes later I decide to go back, got the free-standing full height mirror from the corner and set it behind the chair as a bridge between the door to the hallway and the cabinet door on the island (don't ask, it's too much work describing my bedroom layout) and got a couple of dark blankets to drape over them and went back to the game. Surprise! I've still got the 2nd biggest stack, so I decide to play. Ended up winning the game on a string of huge hands.

Go figure. Maybe I should do that again, say I have 2 3 offsuit and go all in, and everybody'll fold. :D:D:D

It wasn't online but I had the craziest hand the other night.

I was sitting to the right of the button and it was folded around to the guy on my right. He raised 3x the BB. I know him to be a habitual stealer in late position when folded to him so I give him a cold call with Q8s to scare him enough so that I can bluff him off after the turn. Well don't I flop a flush? 96K of spades. So I bet pot sized with my Q high flush so that I can take him off any idea of playing the draw if he has the A or K of spades.. he pushes. I have to call with the Q high flush and I do. He's got the A. Shit, he's going to outdraw me I know it. Turn card comes 10 of spades. Fuck! He just hit the A high flush! He stands up whooting and hollering while the dealer quietly turns over the river. J of spades giving me the K high straight flush.

NICE!

Craziest hand I have ever seen layed out and the closest I have ever come to a Royal. I had 9,10,q,k,a spades at the casino playing Carribean Stud once and the next player had the J as the first card in his hand. One card missing me for $400K
