A giant Dill pickle so they can fuck themselves? :D

Edited: NOT directed at your mom though. If they won't say what they'd like, get the pickle. :P

Gifts that make them do stuff.

Not money gift cards that they can spend doing necessity shopping. That doesn't open any doors.

Store-specific gift cards. Restaurant cards make you get out and do something.

Tickets for a live show or favorite type of music.
(Grandparents will go out to see a "big band" show, but not personally buy tickets.)

Sign them up for a painting class and pay for it.

Movie gift cards are good. They can take a friend.

The best gift is something that gets them more involved in life.

Last Christmas, I got mom and dad a new electric hedge trimmer, which is what mom asked for. The hedges along the front of their house was getting waaaaay out of control and hadn't been trimmed in 10 years. Fast forward to yesterday. I went up to visit them for mothers day. I noticed the hedges hadn't been touched. I asked her where the trimmer was. It's over there. Okay, I see the box, and find it hasn't even been opened. :| Time to get out the extension cord, a ladder and get to work. My hands are sore a day later, but the hedges look a ton better. :)

Your mom wanted it done and asked for the trimmer.
If your dad wanted the hedge trimmed, he would have done it. :D

I give gift cards to Bennigans and Chilis.
That way, they have to go to the restaurant and get out.

Movie passes are good too. They won't spend $8 to see a movie, but they won't waste the money already spent.

I took my dad to Jungle Gardens 2 months ago.
He loves the place. He was in horticulture for 35 years.

Trips to the fishing pier.
Tickets to musical events.
Historical society meetings.
Marine lab meetings.

Anything to get them out and doing something.

They've already got 8 closets full of junk they don't wear.
