Soundproof a room..

Recommended Posts

So I recently moved in to this place and found myself among very, very quite roommates. Although they haven’t complained yet, I believe that I am being a little loud for them. How could I soundproof my room? Has anyone done that before?!!

Just use your "safe" word more often, its cheaper. OH and make the knot tighter around her mouth. That is all
So i just broke up with this woman who wasn't even my girlfriend!

You become suspecious when you use "safe" words.

"Make a knot tighter around her mouth" I didn't even think about the knot idea!! but I will keep that in mindB|

On another note, I want to soundprrof the room not to bother the roommates:)

Cover the walls with egg carton bottoms (paper type works better than foam). It won't make it totally soundproof but what sound isn't absorbed, will be deflected mostly inward.

This is a myth. Eggcrate only deflects, but does not absorb sound. Isolating noise/sound sources is the only way to effectively stop sound from traveling from one room to another.
STC of sheetrock is very high...at all but the highest frequencies. Pipe/drape is cheap, but silly-looking.

Whatever you do, DON'T put foam eggcrate on the wall. It's dangerous, and illegal in all 50 states.

My saxophone teacher lined her room with several layers of what seemed to be those dense blankets that movers use. Seemed to work well.

Is this based on fire regulations? As a music major in college I turned my storage room in the basement into a practice room by hanging foam egg crate on the walls and ceiling with heavy blankets on top of them. It worked amazingly well, but had no idea it was in fact breaking some laws.[:/]

Egg crate foam is a federal issue, the eggcrates themselves (formed paper) are in most states, illegal also for fire. In a bedroom, that's one thing (I used to do the same). But in an apartment, and particularly in any commercial building, it's a fast way to be in serious trouble these days. The incident in Rhode Island brought about a new level of policing.
