Should I start my car with the A/C off?

Recommended Posts

To amplify your own points:

1) On modern cars, the A/C compressor is disengaged via its clutch during starting, so no issues there.

2) On some older cars, or cars with retrofit compressors, the clutch may be engaged during start. It's a good idea to shut these off.

3) On even newer cars, the A/C compressor is not driven directly by the engine, but rather via the car's electrical system. There is no issue there since the compressor does not load the engine.

(Note on 3 - on many hybrids, since the compressor has nothing to do with the engine, you can 'start' the car, run the A/C for a while, then pull out and drive away - without the IC engine ever starting.)
