It's usually delivered by a character close to the main character of the story in the first act as a challenge or statement about what the main character should do. In terms of story structure, this movie precisely follows a formula followed by hundreds of films from Star Wars to The Wizard of Oz. Immediately following the Theme Stated, is the Debate, where the main character questions whether or not he can actually live up to the challenge. In Star Wars the line was given to Luke by Obi Wan, "You must learn the ways of the Force and Become a Jedi." Luke immediately says no; he's in big enough trouble already, but is willing to take Obi Wan to the space port.
