Auto Transmission issue... help needed

Recommended Posts

2005 Chev Cobalt, 55K miles. No issues w/the trans prior to having it serviced as a maintenance thingy. Now, I'm hearing a 'whining', similiar to a vacuum line off, sound... a minor but definative 'clunk' when shifting from R to N to D... and a perceptible loss of engine power to the trans in lower gears. I strongly suspect they put the wrong fluid in it (or something). Anyone think this is a reasonable presumption on my part?

In total, the shop had my car from before Xmas till after New years. I was down a 1/4 tank of gas or so... Which leaves me wondering one of the mechanics used my car as a loaner while I was gone. [:/] Additional repairs were done, but thats a diff issue.
Thoughts and ideas?

A vacuum leak can usually be described as a hiss not a whine...tell me more about the whine...what gear? does it change with engine rpm? will it do it in park or neutral?..does it change with road speed?

detailed information please.

where does the clunk come from? front,back...pass or driver side?.....can the clunk also be heard with application of the brakes? (common problem is the front control arm rear "flat" bushing completely seperating)

detailed information please.

your invoice should have the fluid type they put in on it.

thats quite awhile to have a car for...but the hollidays will certainly slow down things...was the tank dropped for the other work?

What other work was done?

detailed information please. :)

Get it looked at ASAP. Best not to drive it until you talk to a transmission specialist shop. Auto trannies can be destroyed by something as simple as the wrong fluid, and are very expensive to rebuild or replace.

Def not a 'hiss', more of a rub noise... all gears... in and out of the vehicle, and can be heard on passenger side as well (my son noticed it too and he's 9). I does seem to coincide w/rpm and while driving.

The clunk can be heard and felt in the shifter... while sitting with brakes applied ...just moving the shifter slowly back and forth from R-N-D and vice versa. Again, my son noticed it...

Invoice does not specify the type of fluid used, just that it was done (generic material cost and labor)

The shop knew I'd be out of town for the holidays and wouldn't be back till after the first. The tank (gas tank?) wasn't dropped afaik. Additional work included replacing blower/fan for AC/heater, and I had the steering column and intermediate shaft replaced. There's a major issue w/Cobalt power steering and a couple of TSB issued but no recalls as of yet. I was feeling a 'clunk' under my feet, and the mechs felt it was related to the steering. Since kids + no steering == safety issue, I told em to replace it all... [:/] They spent an additional day past the agreed upon pu date trying to get it all assembled correctly, so that the airbag sensor wouldn't light up.
Does all this help?

I parked the car in front of their bay doors.... they'll see it first thing this morning. If they don't resolve the issue, I'll be towing it to the dealer... :|

I've had no issues w/this shop in the past, and have been quite pleased w/all prior work done by them on both my vehicles. But... never had em do anything this "major" before

Reputable shops will give you a service ticket receipt showing the VIN and Mileage on your car, while this is not always true this certainly helps them to keep their employees on a short leash.

We have a local Chevy Dealer, my oldest brother worked there.

Someone decided to take HIS LS6 Chevelle SS for a joy ride when my brother was on vacation.

After my brothers return the manager marched the culprit up to him to explain how his car had been TOTALED.

The punk then was talked to privately while the police were on their way.

In the end my brother never collected all that was due to him, about 3/4 of the value of the car was never recuperated.

Yikes.... B| I believe I would have done a bit more than talking too... and in private, I mean like behind the nearest woodshed!

FWIW... the receipt does show the vin and milage, but the milage is what it was when I picked the car up, not when I dropped it off. [:/]

I'll be picking the car back up after work, so hopefully all will be good by then. I talked to the shop this morning, and they seem to be trying to make it good. They're redo-ing the trans flush and putting in Dex VI, per a TSB (or so he says) although my manual says Dex III. I'm hoping for the best....

Well.....I can only make wild guesses without actually seeing the vehicle...and seeing how the shop that performed the work is going to look at it I will wait to hear back what is said.

Offering to redo the flush with the newer fluid and the fact that they are checking TSB's is a good sign.

The knocking under feet when turning the steering is quite common and is a joint in the intermediate steering shaft.....I have seen many many colbalts/pusuits/G4's 5's etc with the control arm flat bushings completey seperated with the control arm sitting metal to metal on the sub frame...

Please keep us informed :)

The clunk when going into gear could be a broken/unbolted engine mount.

The easiest way to break a mount is to rev the engine in neutral and drop it into gear. Knocking CV joints could also be directly related to this.

I would stay away from that shop if all these problems suddenly arrived after the maintenance.
