keithbar 1 #1 January 28, 2010 actually it's my truck. I have a 98 dodge full size ram with the 318 in it. and it has an ongoing problem that it will die if you lift your foot all the way off the gas sometimes! not all the time. it will not do it for a few days then it will do it everytime for a day or two. there is a part on the back of the throttlebody called a idle air control valve. i replaced it about 2 years ago. fixed the problem for a year or more. did it again . replaced a second time. fixed it for maybe 7 months. just replaced it for the 3rd time a month ago now it's doing it again. any help why is it eating idle air control valves?i have on occasion been accused of pulling low . My response. Naw I wasn't low I'm just such a big guy I look closer than I really am .
buff 0 #2 January 28, 2010 You should also replace your TPS that is on the throttle body. Don't know if it will solve it but I think you are supposed to do the TPS & IACV at the same time. It was alot easier when we had a carb, plugs, points and condenser It's called the Hillbilly Hop N Pop dude. If you're gonna be stupid, you better be tough. That's fucked up. pontiacgtp00 0 #4 January 28, 2010 Yes it is the throttle position sensor, and it will probably need re-calibrated if you replace it. How are your air and fuel filters?
chutem 0 #5 January 28, 2010 My 95 dodge w/318 had a series of steps that woulld get the check engine light to blink trouble codes from the ecm. Something like turn key on and off three times fast then turn on and floor the accellerator (that's not it, as something like that). Your 98 will have the newer OBD II diagnostic system and may or may not be able to do this. Either way you need to see if you have codes stored. Most parts sellers will scan your computer for free. keithbar 1 #6 January 29, 2010 thanks guys. new tps and iacv installed. started it up it was idleing high. thought I'll take it for a test drive and it will warm up and smooth out. after a good 15 mile trip through the country back roads. patting the gas and pumping the brakes to get it to slow up. i pull back up at the house put it park and it idles up to a crazy like 2500 rpms. i pat the gas it doesn't idle down. shut it off. started it right back up it was still crazy high idle. shut it off when in the house and drank a beer. came back out fired it up and after a high idle at start up it idled itself back down to a normal 600 rpm. and now drives fine. I got my fingers crossed that it just had to reset itself. and it's a yah me fix i have on occasion been accused of pulling low . My response. Naw I wasn't low I'm just such a big guy I look closer than I really am .
TonyJ 0 #7 January 29, 2010 have you cleaned the throttle body... the min air flow is what keeps the engine running... the space between the blade and bore is for the min air flow... its gets carbon and the air flow is lost.. so the ais does all the work... also have you been using alot of oil... the intake lower gasket can blow out and cause a large vacuum leak... the best way to find this leak is to remove the hose from the air cleaner on the left valve cover and plug it with your finger... pull the pcv out of the right valvecover, with the hose attached... with the engine running and the vent blocked you should feel light pressure on the hole in the valve cover where you removed the pcv... it you feel vacuum the lower gasket is blown.... 99 was the worst year for this.... tony
