J2 Javlin & 168 pilot

Recommended Posts

I've recently bought a '00 J2 Javelin with 600 jumps on it. It also has a 181 raven reserve. I was led to believe that my new( 50 jumps ) 168 Pilot shouldn't be too much of a problem and that I would maybe have to lengthen the closing loop. I've tried and I really think this is a lost cause. Has anyone been able to this. I didn't try the precision (psycho pack)packing method I did my best at Pro Packing. I'm still new at this but I would like to here that someone that has done it so I can feel that it can be done.[:/]

I had a 170 Spectre with my PDR160 and a cypres in my J2 and that was hard packing for 200 jumps. a 168 Pilot packs a lot larger then the Spectre does so thats even more going against you.

Where are you having issues? Getting it all in the Dbag or all in the container? How long of a loop do you already have?
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

I'm having a devil of a time just trying to get it in the Dbag. After it's had all the air I can get out of it by laying on it and making sure that the tail is still wraped around compleatly and my line groups are still even. I then skrunch the bridle ends loose material into itself to make it manageable enough to fold onto itself and then I try to put that in the Dbag. I now have a bout 1/3 of the canopy inside the Dbag. This is where I wish I had four hands. Even with just this amount in, The Dbag looks very full. I then notice that the tail has unlossened and I have to hold it closed. Thats dooable but at the same time I notice that my line groups are not so even anymore. I believe that the D group has moved back a few inches. Thats not a serious problem yet.
I then stand the Dbag on end and try to stuff the rest in. I pay attention to my line groups and try not to agravate the situation. It's around this point that I start to get discouraged. I just can't believe that I'll be able to get the rest in there. It becomes incresinly harder to keep any order in the line groups and I start having visions of line overs, big burns and all sorts of bad things that can happen.
The closing loop is 4 inches long. Maybe I could get a bigger Dbag. Getting a bigger Dbag in the container sounds better that trying to get this pilot in this Dbag.

Hey Mike. I also have a J2 with a 181 reserve but i have a Sabre2 170. I dont know how much of a packing volume difference there is but one thing to remember is that the J2 Dbag is designed for a 150 sq ft canopy so your stuffing and extra 20 sq ft of fabric into the bag. It is a bitch to pack but it is possible. I usually have someone pack mine but when i do it i do the reverse s-fold. Have someone who knows how to do the reverse s-fold show you and i think you may have an easier time packing.

I have a pilot 168 and the packing manual says it is 416 cubic inches if you look at the attached packing volume you will see that a sabre 150 is 413 cubic inches, so it should fit.

My apologies to bob.dino. In your reply I couldn't see anything for me to open up. I didn't think of clicking on 'this'. It wasn't till a friend of mine said he found the link useful that I realized that I missed something. That was the reason for my " ? " reply

I'm not able to access that site right now but I'll try agin later. My friend said It's about Psycho Packing.
I'm going to learn how.

I have a J-2 with a tempo 170 reserve, and pack my Hornet 170 in it. The Hornet packs up a little smaller than most zero P canopies. I psycho pack and this helps a lot. I had I devil of a time until I learned to psycho pack. Rolling the canopy makes it easy to get the air out, and it opens fine....Steve1

Thanks for the concern. I tried the psycho pack method since I've posted. It doesn't seem to be any easier than a tight Pro Pack. It won't roll up tight enough to make much difference. After I get 100 more jumps on it I think it will roll tighter but then agin that will allow a tighter Pro Pack. Pro packing makes better since to me. I just got back from my rigger and he made it look easy...doable is what I learned. The technique for me to learn is to actually put it in the bag and not let it get away from me. It's all in the folding.
Rolling the the tail( very well ) before it's layed down is a key to not having it get away. Keeping my knee on the junction of the lines and trailing edge and not moving it while I tuck in the sides, doing it quickly and not allowing it to reinflate is another thing for me to learn. The first fold of bringing the line groups with the trailing edge up onto the rest of the canopy is important too. Once I can the bag on the corners, It's just a mater of stuffing it in before it gets away. I left out some of the other steps but these are the ones that I have to get better at.

Have you tried this? It might just help...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I use a variation on the "Reverse S-Fold."
At the second step, I put both knees on the canopy, just above the orange label.
Then I slide the d-bag under the canopy and clamp it with my knees.
.... fold canopy in half and STUFF top corners of d-bag ...
Then I fold the top 1/4 of the canopy into the d-bag.
Finally, I lift my knees, rotate d-bag (so that it rests on bridle attachment), grab slider and shove bottom 1/4 of canopy into d-bag.
Using my knees as clamps reduces the distance that lines can wander and frees my hands.
The other big advantage to "Reverse S-Folding{ is that you break into down into smaller steps .. only struggling with half the canopy at one time.

I'm going to give the method that my rigger suggested a 100% effort Sunday at Taft. Mike Mullens will be there so I will be packing as fast as I can and this is my riggers home DZ. If I have any real problems I can have him give me a refresher packing demo. I know where the battle is in this method, I just have to get the " I can do it " attitude and stuff my Pilot to get in the #!@^%& Ddag. It's just learning a new technique.

Anyone that can talk me into doing a rodeo with me as the bull can get a 168 in the bag. Whisper in its ear and then stuff it. Just like the old days.:P
