Lowish objects, strong tail wind, stowed

Recommended Posts

Let us say you are on top of a 320 object that you jump regularly and usually go stowed off of it. This time you have strong tail winds. You are confident on your skill, the size of the landing area and you go for it. You take your usual ~2 sec delay, flat and stable and throw. Next thing the bridle is wrapped around your arm. Now you only have maybe no more than one second to deal with the problem before bye bye.

Always try to remember that each jump is different given the same object. Going stowed off a lower object can be seen as a sign of skill, confidence, experience, and/or coolness nonetheless. However when conditions are not just right there is no need to kill yourself.

In the first few seconds of freefall your air speed is very low and the presence of strong tail wind is much accentuated than if you were to take a longer delay (altitude permitting of course).

Jumping in strong winds is not wise. Jumping a low object going stowed in strong tail winds is even less wise due to the higher chances of bridle entanglement than going HH.

Please always evaluate the site like it was the first time.

I would hate to see one of my best buddies in the list for a careless overlook.

What specifically is the problem about high tailwinds and deploying a stowed PC in comparison to going handheld in high tailwinds.....?
Are you talking about an issue with PC inflation or an issue in the bridal being blown 'forward'

Briidal management going HH in higher winds has been an issue/concern on a couple of jumps I have done...ie ....the bridal when HH has blown about quite a bit on and immediatley off the exit point...

Could you elaborate on your post a little bit please ...and thanks

!!WARNING: 2 cents from a newbie!!

My input is based on theory, thinking, some observations, and discussions during my FJC, but minimal real world experience. If I am totally wrong or mis-undstand anything please someone with more experience jump in and correct me because I will eventually do another BASE jump and since no one lives near me :( I may end up doing it alone [:/] Hence comprehending how to evaluate wind conditions is important to me.

Stowed pilot chutes can hesitate more than a hand held pilot chute due to the shape of the PC and how the wind hits it. The time between extraction and PC inflation the wind will push the bridal. If the wind is blowing left to right (and your BOC is on the right like most) then the wind is pushing the bridal away from you. If the wind is blowing from the tail or right to left or some combination of the two then the chances for entanglement with the bridal on your arm or PC going into your burble increase.

Leaving a low object usually eqautes to a shorter delay and slower speed at time of deployment. The PC being stowed means the time from initiation to extraction can be slightly longer. The iffy winds from a less than ideal direction can complicate things. Add all three together and you might just get Black Death instead of Blue Skies.

So "Base Rigger" is this the kind of problem you were hoping to prevent with your post?

FYI: "Zoter" is a friend of mine and has a lot more BASE jumps than me.

There is no need to kill yourself when conditions are right, either.

baby that dude is talking about none other than me if. and if u go hand held the pc is already above your arm and u would have to be a super retard to get it raped around your arm. but when stowed when u pitch the pc can blow under your arm in a strong tail wind much the way it does when u pitch to early doing arials. and at 150 feet u really dont want a pc wrapped around your arm
all though it was pretty funny at the time i would not want to do it on a regular basis sooner or later im gonna run out of live ,maybe or maybe not.

and zoter when are u gonna come stay with me in NY i miss terribly
