High Velocity Body Armor

Recommended Posts

Tom; I'm not sure what the rules are for product-marketing on this website, so please remove this post if it's not appropriate.

Having said that, I'm not affiliated with High Velocity in any way. I just ordered a set of their body armor (more information) and will throw up a review as soon as it arrives.

The reason I'm posting this is because I stumbled across a nice deal after some Googling. If you order through their regular website, the armor is 170 US dollars, but if you order through this link it's only 130 US dollars. Make sure you order through that specific website though.

I'm not sure how long this offer will last now that other websites besides Squidbusters know about it, but maybe somebody will find it useful.

To get the proper size, compare the drop-down menu contents on the Squidbusters website with the size-chart on the High Velocity website. Measure around the chest, underneath the armpits. Breathing in or out doesn't matter (according to High Velocity).

Cheers,

Jaap

Edit to fix url.

Does anyone have this body armor? How does your gear fit over it? When I called them up they said the back armor on the jacket is almost 3 inches thick. I would be worried my pin rigs wouldn't fit over it very well. Looks like good stuff though.

In this post JeNnEjEnN mentions that she uses the High Velocity back protector. I believe that is the same shell that comes with the full body armor set. She doesn't mention the thickness as a problem.

Yikes. I guess we'll find out when I receive my armor.

Hey!
Yeah, like I mentioned before, I originally ordered the whole body armor set, but it was really too bulky/uncomfortable and restricted movement too much with a rig on (particularly the shoulder/arm area…). So I exchanged if for the back protector which it really fits/works well.:)Jen

Was this much trouble, or simply a matter of sending it back, and getting the back protector and a partial refund?

I'll try the body armor myself, but restricted arm movement is obviously not an option. I wonder if it's possible to modify the gear a little (take off some padding or cut off the sleeves) to improve movement. Then again, that would void a return.

Ah well, I'll just wait and post my feedback here once it arrives.

Thanks Jen!

I jump with the Dainese version. The Dimensions are nearly identical. I removed the shoulder caps and eventually removed the pads as well and it's fine. I think you'll find it just takes getting used to.

If your rig is tight already, then it's going to be tight. When Marty made my rig, he did it with body armor in mind and added a little length to the laterals and a tiny bit to the lift web. It made all the difference.

Which pin rig do you jump?

I jump an Asylum Perigee Pro so this trick seems to help if you feel the bottom pin is tight.

When you place the canopy in the container, leave the tail pocket up a few inches from the bottom. The next fold can go all the way down to the bottom. Leaving that gap from the bottom allows the second fold a little more room.

Close it up and mash it. Bend up the pack job by flexing it around your knee and it will fit around your body armor a little better.

If it's too cumbersome as a full jacket, the spine protector is quite nice on it's own and in my opinion is a spine protector is a must have item.

Good luck!

The full body armour's arm and chest protector part can be unzipped so you can just wear the spine protector if you need. No need to cut anything off.

We have two sets of this armour here in Kenya. We originally found that the chest armour rides right up to the chin when raising the arms for an exit or for grabbing toggles etc. We also found that the lycra top was to short in the torso and somewhat uncomfortable. We modified one set by removing all of the armour and pads etc and then re-attached them to a custom designed smock type shirt. The smock is longer than the original lycra top and we also had the arm sockets cut differently so as it doesn't ride up. We haven't tried it yet but will upate as soon as we have.
