I spoke with Jo Weber via e-mail and she states Duane was also residing at Leavenworth during the same time frame - mid 1950's. (spooky) 2. Vicki, Have you or others considered the possibility that he went to Canada? Robert I always thought Mexico. He used to cook a lot of Mexican food. We even had a tortilla press. I always thought he was from Canada. That is the lie he told my Mom when he met her in Vegas. Hell....he even put it down as his birthplace on my birth certificate. It wasn't until John Donahue, from the U.S. Marshal's, told me that he had children from a previous marriage. That is how I found out he was born and raised in the San Francisco area and I had a Grandma that died in 1994. He left his own Mother when he left their family in mid 1950's. Robert This car post made two questions come to mind re Cooper....I think this has been addressed before but I can't remember .... 1. Did they check for abandoned cars in the parking lot of the airport? 2. Is there anyway they could know for sure that Cooper did not arrive to Portland via another flight? Or do they just assume that he didn't since he bought the ticket there and seemed to know the area? I am not100% sure about the abandoned car theory. I read somewhere that there were no abandoned vehicles parked in the Portland airport lot. I brought it up previously in a post that NWA flight 305 stopped in Minneapolis/St. Paul prior to landing in Portland. Please do, I could not find anything on the subject looking on the Web. The Madison, Wisconsin paper has relevant articles in their online archives, but I have not paid the fee to access it. The archives from the Minnesota newspapers are on Microfilm at the History center/museum in St. Paul. I did not have enough time during lunch break. OK....Remember I was 7. I will do my best to recall. He was released on bail. He lived with us at the time. He went to his first court appearance. He found out he was looking at hard time. He left in May (ish) of 1971. He just left. He jumped bail the day he left us. We have not seen or heard from him since. My theory on the chubby chin: The guy was on the run..he could have lost a little bit of weight in the five months prior to the hi-jacking. I believe that would make him appear to look more like his pictures when I was 2 - 3 y/o. He was not a rich man (after they took his money...lol). he had nothing, but the clothes on his back. He didn't even take his prize possession, his 1965 Cadillac. He just drove away in the Buick on his way to Federal Court. He did not show up at Court for his appearance and he never came back home. I am not saying he is D.B. Cooper, I just think he is a viable suspect. I do not even know if he was investigated by F.B.I. as a D.B. suspect. The world may never know. He lived with us when he skipped bail. He did not have many friends, other than his crime friends. His first family and his own Mother was abandoned in San Francisco in late 1950's and they had never heard from him again. The money was tied to him because he was arrested passing the bills at a convenience store, and I am to believe the bills found on his person and car matched the bills that were discarded in the river. I went to the Minnesota History Museum to look up the articles on microfilm and did not have the time on my lunch to research the old articles. I am going back this weekend to pull the information. Funny...the older ladies at the front desk at the History center remember the counterfeit money over the bridge incident. No reason for the FBI to kick our door in. That happened back in the Spring of 1971 by the U.S. Marshal's. We have not heard or seen Melvin since he skipped bail. We used to get the yearly phone calls from U.S. Marshal's agents every year with the last call November of 2001 to tell us the case is closed. I don't think he is alive. Just a coincidence that he fits the description and hasn't been heard from since 1971. On the FBI page, Agent Carr was calling out for information such as this. That being said, I thought I would throw it out there. There was such a time lapse between information our families have of him, I am not sure what training or jobs he had. Remember, I WAS SEVEN and have a Mom that keeps her history with him very private. If the money is in a tree stump by Portland. Could a storm have taken a $5880.00 of the money down the river and deposited it at Tena Bar? Just a thought. I am not sure if the FBI will acknowledge if they have any received information about Melvin. It was in the hands of the U.S. Marshal until 2001. Shortly later was dropped after September 11th and is no longer an active case. I sent the Unsolved Mystery video to FBIdotGov's YouTube account last week along with this video I found on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWzgoVQLG7k It is about a pet skunk with an animal cam. The skunk went into a tree trunk and there are pictures of bundled $20's. One of the comments on the video says it looks like it is at Horsetail Creek, which is East of Portland on the Columbia River. (I saw a post on this thread that the money was possible in a stump) I look occasionally on the web for tidbits on D.B. Cooper and also watch the FaceBook D.B. Cooper fan page. My Mom is very private and I only know what I remember from the age of 7. He was an avid scuba diver, he made friends easily, and he worked at Mayflower Moving and Storage. I was speaking to a friend the other day about his "new toy" a remote controlled hobby truck with gas engine. I remembered my Dad had those remote controlled airplanes he would fly when we were young. He seemed a little obsessed with them. :) My Mom told me that Mel was not a violent person, but insisted she keep a lead pipe in our car for protection purposes. He did not like having his picture taken. I do not have more pictures available to me. What I had was sent to UM for the show, other pictures were given by his first wife.
