  1. https://www.cabinetreport.com/special-education/study-finds-intentional-misdiagnosis-of-autism "Almost another quarter reported that their child never actually had the condition but received the diagnosis anyway in order to quality for more services. And 21 percent said treatment or maturity seemed to resolve the condition." http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2008/s2418004.htm "In Queensland today, there are fresh accusations that doctors are misdiagnosing children so they qualify for help in the classroom. But with a new Federal Government support package being rolled out, there's fresh hope of a more uniform approach. " https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-real-reasons-autism-rates-are-up-in-the-u-s/ "Then, in 1991, the U.S. Department of Education ruled that a diagnosis of autism qualifies a child for special education services. Before this time, many children with autism may instead have been listed as having intellectual disability. The change may have encouraged families to get a diagnosis of autism for their child. The number of children who have both a diagnosis of autism and intellectual disability has also risen steadily over the years."
  2. That study doesn't support your claim that people are being diagnosed with autism and PTSD in order to receive treatment for other conditions/disorders. "You have a child with parents in the middle of divorce or other things are going on and they just need someone to talk to. Unfortunately that's not covered by insurance so they end up labeled autistic or ptsd or something just so they can get the help."
  3. "Overdiagnosis of mental disorders in children and adolescents (in developed countries) Eva Charlotte MertenEmail author, Jan Christopher Cwik, Jürgen Margraf and Silvia Schneider Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health201711:5 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13034-016-0140-5© The Author(s) 2017 Received: 12 July 2016Accepted: 11 December 2016" intentional mental health diagnosis in children "Influence of factors concerning the health systems Literature also suggests intentional overdiagnosis due to health policy constraints. As in many health care systems a diagnosis is required in order to access and reimburse treatment, intentional wrong coding in diagnosing mental disorders does occur in child and adolescent mental health services and can partly account for the overdiagnosis found in studies reevaluating earlier diagnoses. Clinicians might intend to ensure help for children with unclear or borderline symptoms or want to proceed with an evaluation without denying treatment when it is too early to render a diagnosis."
  4. Remember the ongoing argument over kiss passes? There were people actually arguing that putting your tongue down a student's throat was part of the sport and they shouldn't go to a DZ if they didn't like it. My suggestion was that if that was the case then they should have to do it with *every* female student. That didn't go over well. Probably went over better than had you said kiss pass *every* student. It occurred to me but those were different times.
  5. Nobody is being diagnosed with autism just so they can talk to someone. Same with PTSD. The problem is the general low opinion of people giving and receiving mental healthcare held by so many ignorant people. Neither diagnoses nor treatment are typically given arbitrarily. Strange. I know at least three psychologists who are under the impression they've been doing it. Your comments suggest you don't know enough about psychology to have at least three psychologists confide in you that they've been committing fraud. Yeh, that must be it.

  7. Hey Joe - I think that's a fundamental misunderstanding of mental illness, particularly depression. Unfortunately I've had far too much exposure to this in my friends - and I have lived in countries with socialised health care nearly all my life. The cost aspect has never been a factor. I don't totally understand - I don't think you can unless you suffer from it yourself -but it's not so much a matter of not wanting help, often its more that you don't think you are worthy of it. We somehow need to start treating it pretty much the same way we treat physical ailments and in many ways I think it often is. Mind you, the way we treat physical ailments in a lot of people needs work but at least we know that, for the most part. And then there's the way children are treated. You have a child with parents in the middle of divorce or other things are going on and they just need someone to talk to. Unfortunately that's not covered by insurance so they end up labeled autistic or ptsd or something just so they can get the help.

  9. Is the sign something that you want to communicate during the jump, like "will you marry me?" or something for a photo, like "people are jumping to eat at Joe's"? If the latter remember, Photoshop is your friend. I've managed to take photos with advertisements on the t-shirt taken in freewill and fill in the missing spots so that it doesn't look touched up but it's easily read. Otherwise you can make a lot of jumps trying to get a shot with the entire text legible.
  10. "3. For info only - Why are students not given permission to wear a camera before a limited number of jumps. I've always thought that would be a great way to help learning the course? " In 1979 I watched a first jump student try to talk Laurie into letting him attach an Estes rocket camera to his chest strap. It was small and lightweight and he pointed out that it would automatically snap a shot as he exited. No go, she shut him down. So at least it's not a new situation. Welcome to the sport, you'll be an experienced jumper with a GoPro in no time. edited to add: I'm not an instructor so I get to pass on the whole question.
  11. It's kind of amazing when you think how many tens of thousands of people are just the sort that this site is set up for.
  12. I think a more apt comparison would be "how difficult would it be for a 16 year old to find someone who would loan them a car?" It would be legal, but that's not the catch.
  13. Sigh, I remember it well. I remember when deliberate high speed low turns started and I kept referring to them as "swoop turns." I'd always be corrected, "swoop" is for freefall only.
  14. I agree but for the NRA and the hard core of gun rights supporters. Every single concession will be a hard fought battle. As political battles are apt to be. trump is reported to have met with NRA leadership last night. So his position today will likely be to support gun rights today. Or at least until some other distraction is needed. You could likely have an intelligent conversation with the (R) Brian Mast. He supports a assault weapons ban. But two days ago Florida voted such a ban down. I'm not saying that a comprehensive solution needs a ban. Well thought out proposals need off camera, bi-partisan committee consideration and debate. Because radicals on both sides will stonewall. Both sides will pander. These are good ideas but won't help until and unless the number of guns already out there and the millions more being produced annually is dealt with. Then these things could help keep things sane.
  15. The numbers are pretty much all that matter when discussing crime rates. On that note...
  16. No, not in the context of the posts. They were referring to Chicago, not some neighborhood within. As for some neighborhood with a higher crime rate than some other neighborhood, you can find that in any large city anywhere in the world. I would suggest that you NOT play the numbers game as your post would suggest. Jerry Baumchen Personally, I don't think the numbers matter all that much but every time I mention Chicago I get hit with "but you do know that their homicide rate is lower than (fill in the blank). I'm not sure how it matters. But if people are going to use that as an excuse to not do anything about it then I think they need to at least be careful about where they get the numbers.
  17. Unfortunately I think every line in your proposal is a moot point until other issues are dealt with. But it's well though out.
  18. But this "old and racist" generation was part of the 60s and 70s social movement and we though racism was a thing of the past, once the old people died.
  19. People say that the homicide by firearms rate is down in Chicago but it seems to be a perfect case of lying with statistics. Chicago is a huge city, geographically and population wise. Using the entire population of Chicago as a base gives very incorrect results. There are areas in Chicago where gun violence is bad, and we need to do the numbers on those areas, not the entire city.
  20. As I’ve always said, even a blind dog gets a truffle twice a day. https://www.cbsnews.com/live-news/trump-meets-with-republicans-democrats-on-school-safety-live-stream-updates/ "In an hour-long meeting with Democrats and Republicans filled with newsworthy comments on gun control Wednesday, President Trump parted ways with members of his own party and accused them more than once of being "petrified" of the National Rifle Association. "They have great power over you people," the president said to his fellow Republicans. "They have less power over me." "Some of you are petrified of the NRA," he added. "You can't be petrified." “ On the other hand, I now expect to see Hillary Clinton walking around in camo and talking about the joy of shooting ducks. Bob
  21. Since the FAA has started coming to some of our shows I got a rig for the pilot. I got it out for him but he was talking to someone in the other room. I made the mistake of going to the bathroom and when I came out he had it across his back and was pulling the risers with one hand and the leg straps with the other. It had to be repacked. This was from a very experienced pilot. He's also an idiot, but that's not exactly thin on the ground either.

  23. What sort of floor surface are you packing it on. Once I went full ZP I had to quit packing on vinyl flooring. It's too slick and I can't keep the S turns under control. So, no more packing in our terminal lobby, now I pack and on the carpet in the meeting room.
  24. Personally I'd do a quick, solo short delay from 5 to 6 K just to get the butterflies out then get serious.
