  6. Ben said--> Here are the figures I've been pushing around in my head: 210lb jumper in a 3G spin = 630lbs of force being exerted on risers. DB: I agree Ben: Assume 75% of that force is being exerted on one side of the harness due to the spin. Also assume that the weight distribution between front and rear is 50/50. DB: OK--although 75-25 seems way to high. (60-40 seems more likely Ben: This gives a force on the highest loaded front riser of (630*0.75)/2=236.25lbs. DB: This is incorrect, as the force on the three ring assembly is the combined total of the front and rear risers Ben: So, 236lbs of force at the riser will equate to a load on the smallest ring of 236/200=1.181lbs for the large ring set. Using the same figures for the mini-rings @ 30:1 gives 7.86lbs. This force is acting upon the Teflon cable. DB: This is incorrect, as the force on the three ring assembly is the combined total of the front and rear risers. Ben: The load on the other riser is going to be 78.75lbs. At the cable we're going to see 0.39lbs for Large and 2.625 for mini. DB: This is incorrect, as the load on the riser/three ring assembly is the combined total of both the front and rear risers. 75% on one side would be 472 lbs. three ring load, not 235. But, as I said before, I believe that 60% is a more realistic figure--not 75% Ben: A load of 10.485lbs (mini) on the Teflon cables doesn't seem that large. Granted, I've worked this out in a very simple way and to get the Teflon cables moving you will require a force significantly greater than the 10.485lbs, plus you need to add in friction for the rest of the system. Maybe we're looking at 25 or so lbs (arbitrary figure). Is 25lbs a reasonable figure to expect? DB: If we go with my numbers of 60% for the highest loaded riser, that would translate to 60% of 630 lbs, or 378 lbs for the highest three ring/riser load. With a 30-1 reduction, that would result in 12.6 lbs at the loop end with a mini ring set-up at 30-1. Dave Brownell

  8. I've been doing this excess line stow method for 900+ jumps. (now have 1200) I have never had a problem with this method before this incident. NOTE: I've been told that the new Vector Tandem rig specifies this excess line stow method, which I claim, to have first used back in the mid eighties. Dave Brownell Mesa, AZ
  9. Terrorist trained at my FBO! I have just learned that the person that was arrested today (Friday) in New York for giving false information to the FBI, had done flight training at my FBO at Chandler Regional Airport in SE Phoenix metro! (Sunbird Aviation) He is being returned to Phoenix to face two counts of giving false information to the Feds-(Grand Jury inditement) as said by US Attorney General, John Ashcroft. The CFI that he had, has said that he did very poorly on landings, and was a poor student--sound familiar! His name is Faisal AlSalmi--it is said by the FBI, that he associated Hani Hanjoor when they both lived here in Phoenix. This/my FBO-'Sunbird Aviation,' has had many FBI visits recently. Hani Hanjoor did flight training at Sawyer Aviation at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. (also, a poor student) Hani Hanjoor is the one that the FBI believes flew the Boeing-757 into the Pentagon! Would you recommend a 20-24"ZP for a Manta 290? DB> Of course not, but how many Manta 290's are being jumped by experienced jumpers?! Mike-> Granted, even a 20"ZP PC will probably produce 150 lbs of snatch force, DB-> First of all, a pilot has drag, not snatch force. What is snatch force? Snatch force is defined as the peak and average force that is required to accelerate the slider, canopy, and bag back to the speed of the jumper. Snatch force begins at the point of last line stow release* and lasts only for several milliseconds. Less then eight milliseconds for the slider and more than forty milliseconds for the canopy. Some factors that effect snatch force are the fall rate of the jumper, (air speed) the drag of the pilot chute, (size) the elongation of the suspension lines, risers and harness, the packed height of the canopy and the mass (weight) of the canopy. Peak snatch force can actually exceed 300 pounds in some cases! This, however, lasts only for a few milliseconds before opening forces begin. This is the "jerk" that we feel just before opening shock. Brownell NOTE: A 20" ZP pilot chute has about 50 lbs of drag at 120 MPH IAS. Mike-> but I don't think that smaller PC's are optimum for everybody.. DB> This issue is covered, in my soon to be released article. Mike-> Speaking of PC's, I've been thinking about something lately.. I'm considering rigging up a system so that I can deploy different types of PC's in freefall, attached to something that will measure the pull force, and then be able to cut the PC away (such as a 3 ring release) after getting a good measurement of force exerted by the PC.. So far, it seems that attaching it to the front of the rig, and deploying it while on my back is the best option.. Anybody have any kind of recommendations for scales for such a purpose? DB> Forget about trying to do it in freefall. Use a pick-up truck. Install/fasten vertically, a small diameter EIGHT foot pole behind the cab. (3/4" water pipe) (bottom end at bed floor) The top of this pole can be held tightly to the cab top with lines attached to it that extend and fasten to the left and right points of the bumper. This method will eliminate having to install a mount at the cab's rear/roof line. The bottom of the pole will have to be held in place by other methods. At the top of this pole install a large diameter pulley that will accept 1/4" line. Fasten a piece of said line at/near the bottom area of the pole. Fasten the other end of this line to a fish scale, so that the scale is at the center of the cab's rear window. Fasten a piece of said line to the top of the fish scale--thread the other end of this line through the pulley--the length of this line should be long enough to extend at least three feet beyond the pulley/pole to minimize turbulence from the pole. (allow 6" for knot) The following "math" should yield fairly accurate results. To be done in no wind conditions--early morning. At 60 MPH the scale reading is 25% of the drag at 120 MPH (reading X 4, for 120 MPH drag) At 80 MPH the reading is 44.4% of the drag at 120 MPH (reading X 2.25 for 120 MPH drag) At 100 MPH the reading is 69.44% of the drag at 120 MPH (reading X 1.44 for 120 MPH drag) At 110 MPH the reading is 84% of the drag at 120 MPH (reading X 1.2 for 120 MPH drag) BTW: The higher the truck speed, the greater the accuracy.   15. I first attack any grass stains with 'Clorox Clean-Up,' then-> I do a regular wash with 'max water level'--cold/warm, with a phosphate detergent, followed by "at least" two full rinses to minimize the residual soap in the grippers--then I hang to dry. Dave Brownell

Background: The Icarus Crossfire was released in August 2000. After its release it became apparent that an anomaly existed where some Icarus Crossfire Canopies experienced severe buffeting when initiating front riser control inputs. After conducting a series of experiments and tests on the effected canopies, the canopy’s trim was modified. Additional modifications have also been implemented. We have been made aware of additional Crossfire canopies that have experienced buffeting and/or instability during front riser controlled flight similar to that which was experienced with the original model. This has been documented in a variety of sizes, wing loadings, and various meteorological conditions, and is not limited to any one manufacturing plant. Based on the body of information we have received, we are investigating all possibilities that may contribute to this condition. We have concluded that this condition is limited to canopies within a range of serial numbers. This list is attached to this document. To assist our customers who have parachutes that are UNAFFECTED, a subsequent register is also posted on our website listing those canopies that are NOT subject to this Safety Bulletin. Required Action: It is imperative that all Crossfire owners, operators, pilots, drop zones, jumpers, and any other users cease and desist the use of front riser control input on the affected Crossfire canopies immediately, pending the finalization of our evaluation. Until such time Icarus Canopies action a directive to remedy this anomaly, we feel that this action is necessary in the interest of our customer’s safety. A statement will be released on or before 01 October advising the results of our evaluation and additional directives and actions will be issued at that time. Icarus Canopies have established an email address [email protected] and invite Crossfire users to advise us if you have or haven’t experienced this anomaly (please list your canopy’s serial number).
