  1. I dunno Cas, I have a friend who has done 20 or so jumps and is now getting a pilots license. He's afraid of heights but has no problem skydiving and flying. However he shakes like a dog shitting bricks when he tries to climb something even fairly easy. ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. 2. Here is directly from my IRC server's site. These are pretty much UNIVERSAL IRC rules: ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. Charlie Bronson's always got rope!" - The Boondock Saints
  3. so do we get to see pics or what ? ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. Charlie Bronson's always got rope!" - The Boondock Saints
  4. just wanted to bump this and hopefully get some answers ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. Charlie Bronson's always got rope!" - The Boondock Saints
  5. you know i thought about calling this the rock climbing and skydiving movies but you guys don't need skydiving movies you already know what it's about. post those over on rc.com - cuz we're clueless for the most part;) ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? 6. Well first tell me how you feel when you look at your canopy? When I'm the base of a rock looking at the route I feel mostly just excited. I feel especially excited if I'm onsighting it (onsighting = climb a route for the first time with absolutely no information about the climb) or if i'm doing a climb I've done before but failed or done badly with too many takes (take = a command to your belayer to take out all the slack and let you rest on the rope before continuing). If the route R or X rated it can get a little scary. R means run-out which means you're going to go far above you last piece of protection and fall a long way if you fuck up. X means a fall is likely to result in a severe injury or death. ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. Charlie Bronson's always got rope!" - The Boondock Saints
  7. http://www.bigupproductions.com/bigUpSite2/initial.html check out that website, if you click on each of the films it will give a small link to "trailer." the movies are just previews but it will give an idea of what rock climbing and bouldering is about (rather than drawing your conclusions from cliffhanger or MI:2) other climbers, feel free to post more links to movies! ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? 8. *swooon* Girls who climb overhanging routes = marriage material You know what's even worse ... leading on slab ... when you fall you fall onto the wall (unless you can react fast and push your self off and then whip back into it). About the scuba diving thing, a friend of mine is really into it and she told me how there is two types of licenses you can get. A NAVY?? one and something else. Well the non-NAVY isn't as good and I guess people aren't really prepared to deal with FUBAR situations. ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. 9. Yeah that's pretty much what I'm saying. I mean you could jump off the side of a cliff but running a sprint at 20,000 feet. won't happen The ice axe thing works, except it would have torn his arms out. We had this discussion one night. If you look on a carabiner or any piece of climbing gear you'll find a rating in Kilonewtons. So my big locking carabiner says like 28 kN which equals about 5,200 pounds of force. If I exerted that kind of force on my body, IT would break before any of my gear did. Anyway I'm really glad to see that people think so highly of rockclimbing. The danger with climbing is also less in the begining and worse at the end. You get exhausted, sometimes dehydrated if it's a really hot day. You really really have to pay attention and not screw up. ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. Charlie Bronson's always got rope!" - The Boondock Saints
  10. Hmmmm you got a point there Lainey. I still think skydivings takes more balls. I'm not afraid of heights and I love cliff-diving. But jumping out of a plane with nothing but a parachute to save my ass ... I don't know .. I've always imagined skydiving to be beautiful but imagine this picture: http://photos.rockclimbing.com/photos//603/60358.jpg and the view you have from up there. It's funny that you mention beautiful, calm and breathtaking because that is what I love so much about rock climbing. You do all this hard work and finally make it to the top and then you enjoy the view and the peace. With skydiving I've always viewed the concept to be backwards. You're in a beautiful place and then you rush back down to earth I think you're alredy catching on to the addiction of climing ... when you make that hold you couldn't do before, what a rush of satisfaction! Are there instances like that in skydiving ??? ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. Charlie Bronson's always got rope!" - The Boondock Saints
  11. Well I figured I'd start an official thread here on what rockclimbing and skydiving have in common and where they differ. Obvioulsy, some of my thoughts may be completely wrong, since I've never jumped, so feel free to correct, add yours and discuss. Similarites - everyone things you're insane for doing it - the sport can be dangerous and lead to injuriy/death - you care for your gear VERY much and take better care of it than you would of your firstborn child - it can get very expensive Differences - Skydivers have bigger balls - Rockclimbers are a lot stronger - Rockclimbing is like puzzle-solving. physically exhausting puzzle-solving - Rockclimbing is more rewarding because of how much practive and physica/mental effort it takes to climb at a certain level (and you are fighting gravity, rather than letting it do all the work) your turn ... ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? 12. well the server is refusing connection. who runs the server anyway? how many DZ.com users are usually on at one time?? I've been running an irc server for about 3 or so I may be able to help. If you have Mozilla (not just firefox but the full mozilla suite) you have a decent irc client embedded. it's way better than using a java applet. otherwise I really suggest you download a client like mIRC with a script. Here is my mIRC with eXtreme script: http://www.dogicdesign.com/myspace/images/mIRC1.jpg way way easier on the eyes and much faster, much more stable than java applets. Once they make up their mind about the server I will config it and put it up for download. ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. 13. BASE Jumping? Well I could be wrong but that whole chasing the chute thing you see in movies is their version of Vertical Limit. I I think if you're doing a normal altitude jump you have like about a minute before you're fucked. ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. 14. The saint is here to show support. RE: Rappelling we have a saying in my group of climbers: "Friends do not let friends sport rappel!" anyway, it's good to be here, cheers! ----------- "Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope. Charlie Bronson's always got rope!" - The Boondock Saints
