  1. I work at Bloomberg in NYC. About a week ago, I was coming up from my desk to get some breakfast around 7am (...I'm in the office around 6am). In one of the main conference rooms, there were 10 people in the room, all of them wearing suits and ties, with a camera guy taking pictures. They were clearly political operatives going over Mike's bid to run for president.

I've seen Mike several times now in my 10 months with the company. He's a guy who has complete command presence.

The first few times I saw him was when he was winnowing out his media business (...a long time money losing operation, but important to his brand). There were clashes going on between the NYC office and the Washington office, and he set about to clear matters up. Every time I saw him during this period, he was talking to someone and laying down the law. Calmly, laying down the law. That matter has been sorted out now, and widely published for those who read those kind of articles.

If he runs, and wins, things will be different. And, for the most part, better than they are now. I don't agree with him on all of his issues. But, he is a guy who gets it done. In my 22 years on the street, there are very few people I've come across who has what he has (...he's not the first billionaire I've come across).

If he decides to run, it won't be a Ross Perot run. He'll be in it to win it, and will walk the walk. Like he does every day, and has done every day of his life.

suggest that a single digit percentage (maybe even less) can't succeed in becoming a theoretical physicist or an NFL quarterback, no matter how hard they try.

I'm assuming you meant to say can't, kallend. Part of the process of getting back up and persevering is learning from your mistakes and actually making decisions that fit within your skill set. On top of never stopping when it comes to expanding your skill set.

Correct. But that does not mean we have to give up our social constructs. There is a balance between "every man for himself" which if we followed we would still be living in caves, or more likely be extinct. And "all for one, one for all" which as we all know, would also have lead us to no advancement at all.

Oh, Jesus. Social constructs? WTF is that? It's a collection of words that don't necessarily translate into anything of value in a civilized society.

Trying, getting up again, and working hard doesn't have anything to do with living in a cave and looking out for yourself.

You're one of those people that think government should take care of you, in whatever measure that may be. That's not a civilized society, IMO.

You might achieve happiness or even reasonable mediocrity, which has nothing to do with success, but to think that anyone and everyone can simply 'overcome' any and all obstacles in life is delusional - what I said earlier.

I could not disagree with you more. You're wrong, IMO. Couldn't be more wrong. If you get you're dick knocked in the dirt, you lay there for a minute, catch your breath, and get the fuck back up. The only thing that's going to keep you from getting back up is yourself.

just some of the 100,000 reasons people might not succeed in the world or in life and mostly completely out of any of their control.

These people need to persevere, learn how to pick themselves up, shake the dust off, and get back in the saddle. It is that simple, and it's their responsibility to do so as responsible citizens in a civilized society. And, I'm speaking from experience.

Not quite sure why I am even responding given how moronic that comment is, but lets start with you explaining to me EXACTLY how a gun would defend you against a car bomb?

A gun could have stopped the car bomber from entering your country.

I would say TK's right to life IS greater than your right to guns.

This premise is utter nonsense. How would someone's right to own a guy impact TK's right to life? Seriously, your premise is absolute nonsense. You can't even have a relevant conversation around it.

And then you wonder why people think you want to take away their guns.

    +1

I live in the NYC area. Cannot count the number of times the Daily News has shown a City Councilman holding a shotgun over the phrase "One More Automatic Gun off the streets". You can't have a conversation with someone who doesn't know the words.

Rights are up for interpretation pretty much every day by courts in the country. It is called the judicial branch.

Are you referring to state/local courts, or federal courts?

If it's federal courts, it sounds like you've acquiesced to the current lack of respect for our Constitution that's evident in all of our government branches today.

That raises the question - what is a right? My understanding of that is it's an activity you take in your life that doesn't impact on others' lives.

Our Constitution guarantees a right to own firearms. The vast majority of gun owners can do that , and have zero impact on others lives.

  10. That was great! The Yankees play that Sinatra song at the end of every game at home. Even though I'm a redneck from the deep south, that song has absolutely grown on me as I've lived here for 20+ years.
