I would say find someone to let you try one out before you go and purchase. If you aren't interested in learning a new operating system it can make you miserable. My dad bought a Mac because my brother and I both have them and rave about them, but he hated every second of it. He did nothing but complain about how hard it was to learn how to do everything he already knew how to do on a PC, yet he never took the time to go through the tutorials that Apple provides. He ended up giving it to my sister and bought himself a new PC. He decided he was better off buying cheap and replacing the computer every couple years than he was on spending some serious money on something that would last a while longer.

For what reason would you say a Mac will last longer than a PC? I can put all the same hardware in a different case... or even better hardware? Nor does PC equal cheap... it just means more options and flexibility.

Hmmm...was thinking more along the lines of a Mac vs. the cheapo low end PC that people tend to compare a Mac's price to. As someone else just mentioned, if you want to spec them out the exact same you are looking at similar prices. You don't go to the store and see a $400 Mac laptop as an option though. My comment really doesn't apply if you are going to go and spend the same $1,000 to $1,500 on a PC laptop, but it seems most of the time (in my experience) price tends to be the reason many people say a Mac isn't an option and instead go for a much cheaper (in both price and construction/quality) PC.

  3. Welcome to the club! If you are not already familiar with Mac, take the time to do some of the Mac for Windows users tutorials on Apple's website. They'll show you how all sorts of stuff on the Mac relates to what you are used to on a Windows machine.

  4. After 25 years of thinking I hated pickles, I tried one and turns out I love 'em. I've been tempted to drink the juice, but I'm taking baby steps. Been 7 years since I started liking pickles. I figure sometime in the next few years I'll try drinking the juice and probably love it too.

  5. I have several friends who have worked up there and they've all mentioned you can pretty much go in any direction and have a fantastic hike.

  6. Pretty good here. Working a 48 Sat and Sun, but love work and have great co-workers. Would be nice to be out fishing instead, but working a couple 48 hour shifts in a row will allow me a week at a family reunion next week and a week of fishing at the end of the month. Woo hoo!

  7. Working a 48 followed by a day off and another 48. Then I'm off for 6 days! Heading up to Philadelphia to a family reunion that should prove to be quite a drunken affair.

  8. Gallon sized containers of goldfish crackers. My mom used to mail one up every other week. Not only are the delicious at any time of day or night, but they work great as currency when playing cards. We has a weekly poker game and it was always a sad day when we actually had to break out the poker chips because we ran out of fishies.

Apparently the Godfather series and many other classics.

Didn't think of those. I've only ever seen most of the 1st one.

I don't think I ever saw a skinny paramedic! So, your probably not the only one that enjoys a late night snack!

You aren't kidding. I moved into this job from one that had me strenuously active 90% of the time. Even when we're working 24 hours straight there is hardly a moment of true physical work (short of having to lift Mama Cass onto a stretcher once in a while). I've had to completely overhaul the kind of working out I do.

The Princess Bride. I just mocked someone recently for not seeing that one.

Perfect example. So do you have any that YOU should have seen by now but haven't?

    Dude.

That sucks. I know what you mean. I got a lecture from my roomates because I did this in the bathroom....the cottage cheese throwing pays its rent too!

    NSFW!!!!

Wow. I'm pretty sure I could have gone the rest of my life without seeing that and been perfectly happy. Maybe we should create a new warning:

  13. ...should you be ashamed that you have never seen?

For me, it was Groundhog Day. I'm happy to say I just saw it for the first time last week though. Friends have made fun of me for not having seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies, but I would hardly call them classics that everyone and their mom should have seen (like Star Wars, or Top Gun).

  14. For those of you that work nights, do you tend to eat a full meal sometime in the middle of the night, or do you still try to go from dinner to breakfast?

I've been working a 24/48 hour shift for a few months now and am still getting used to it, both mentally and physically. I try to eat three solid meals during the day when possible, and have recently been finding myself picking up a 4th meal in the middle of the night when we're busy.

I've been trying to keep the snacking or overnight meal healthy, but the tendency is to end up stopping for fast food somewhere during the 30 to 40 mile drive between the hospital and the station.

Just curious how others that have been doing this kind of work longer tend to do it!

ps...it's good to be back on dz.com. Was gone for quite a while and happy to be reconnecting with some familiar faces.

Being from Georgia, I had never had any dealings with them and was pretty freaked out by it.

When my family first moved to Georgia (Marietta) we had them all over the property. It was a new development and all of the new houses were finding them inside. We used to frequently find them in the dishwasher and in the laundry room, so I can only assume they were hanging out where there was some residual water.

My poor mom. 4 kids under 8yrs old and she was introduced (via the kids finding them) to both black widows and scorpions right after we moved in.
