  1. During my student days a good 20 or so years ago I borrowed a chestmounted altimeter and in my haste failed to fasten the chestrap properly. I think I was doing a 15 second delay with alti check to confirm the height once I had counted to 15. As soon as I left the plane & arched the strap unwound & I could hear & feel it flapping behind me. I did not realise the danger back then & was more concerned about losing the altimeter than anything else but luckily for me when I looked back I could see it was still attached right on the end so I pulled it back in & quickly dumped. I think I may have crossed my arms once the canopy was opening, not sure as it was a long time ago & I may have also opened high so may not have had reached terminal velocity yet. Anyway I was very lucky..... Since then I always give my chestrap a tug to make sure...
  2. Hi, need some advice from the experts I jump a pilot 188 on a Wings Container - Model W14 My reserve is a PD 176 I would like to downsize my main to a 170 & was wondering if I can do so using my existing container or is the container too large. I don't want to have to get rid of the whole kit to downsize Thanks
  3. Anyone got any suggestions/advice for life insurance cover for skydivers in the UK? I don't jump very often & after starting a family I now need to ensure that I am insured for any eventuality. What do most skydivers do?
  4. The canopy is still relatively new, only 75 jumps so it's still slippery & a bugger to pack, I guess I want a smaller easier to pack size. Yes. The only way you'll outgrow it is to put on too much weight. With the rate you jump you it will take many many years to fully explore the flight of the 190 and to become confident in all wind and landing area conditions. Thats why I bought the 190 as I seem to put on weight as I get older Thanks guys, I guess I'd better stay with what I have till I put on more weight and have to get a bigger size
  5. I jump a pilot 190 & would like to downsize to a smaller canopy, probably a 170 I'm not in any hurry or anything but I have only jumped larger rigs in my skydiving career (Silver Hawk 192) and various student canopies when I haven't jumped for awhile, probably also 210's I weigh about 13.8 stone (192 pounds) I have been in the sport since 1988 but have had a few long gaps in between & only do a few jumps in the summer each year. In total I have just over 155 jumps I know experience is everything but I want a rig that will last me a longtime without growing out of it. Would it be a bad idea if I went out & bought a smaller canopy? Any suggesions would be most appreciated thanks
  6. Not sure if this story is true or not so I think it might possibly may be an urban legend or something. About 16 years ago I heard a story about a group of skydivers (possibly a 4 way) doing RW without any altimeters Apparently they used the orange trees in some fields below as rough reference to their altitude, they figured that as soon as the oranges came into view it was time to open their canopy's It seemed to work very well until one day the oranges got picked of all the trees & they all went in
  7. Enter these coordinates into Google earth & check out the Lancaster Bomber heading towards a airfield nearby. 52 20 10.87N 0 11 43.34W Not all that exciting but still interesting never the less. I know it's been mentioned before but I wonder if any free fallers have ever been captured on camera by satellites. It would be amazing to look at. I've tried a few drop zones but they must choose images on days when the place is is quiet.
  8. I will do that, I think a lot of things have changed since I last jumped. I think the best bet would be to travel abroad & do some sort of refresher courses to get me going again. thanks for your replies....
