  8. Jarrodh is right. You just need to keep checking frequently. You'll find one.
  9. Another reason for using F-111 on the reserves is because when Zero-P fails, it usually fails catastrophically. Zero-P is much less porous. Therefore, if there is a rip in the canopy, all the energy in the air from the opening will be channeled directly to the tear, and therefore cause the tear to become much larger. F-111 breathes more, so if there is a tear in the fabric, the air doesn't tend to rush to the spot and make the tear larger (which is a very desirable trait when you're talking about your last chance to ever have sex again).
  10. I contacted the sheriff's department and confirmed that this is legit. I'm hoping that if enough people read this we might be able to help out: The Greene Co. Sport Parachute Center of Bardstown Ky. was the victim of a significant robbery during the early AM hours of Sunday December 17th. Someone broke into the locked hanger using bolt cutters and stole the personal and drop zone property. The thieves stole skydiving rigs, cameras, radio and other items. They had to know us and have been around the parachute center and likely befriended us because they knew where things were and where to find them. It is apparent that the thief knew what he or she was after! Judging from what they took they know something about skydiving gear and know personally. A $2,000.00 reward (and maybe more) to anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who committed this crime. 11. ...holy...that sounds pretty sick. I hope that was highly exagerated heh. That is freaky. Not exagerating at all. Don't jump if you have a cold.
  12. Can you all speak up!!??? My ears are damaged and I can't hear you. (really bad joke huh?) By the way, I also take psuedophed (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) if I think there is any possibility of blockage due to allergies. Or if I recoved from a cold a few days earlier. If I have a cold, or I think I still have a cold, I don't jump. I saw a friends face explode with blood because he tried to jump when he was stuffed up. Not a pretty sight (the blood part was pretty cool, but seeing my friend in pain sucked!). I guess the lesson is the same as it is with everything concerning safe jumping: If you're not sure, stay on the ground so you can jump another day.
  13. Time for the low number jumper to chime in and say something that will get them flamed (man I love it!). So here goes: Damn guys! I know it's not possible for everyone to be friends with everyone, but damn. This thread got hostile fast. In the words of the great drug addict Rodney King: Can't we all just get along? Regardless, I'm glad no one got hurt. I've now made myself a target, so fire away!
  14. No one should ever have to apologize for trying to add constructive comments to these discussions. The whole purpose of these threads is to create an environment conducive to discussions and learning. That is exactly what is being done here. The individual experiences shared by each person leads to greater knowledge overall. If you say something and someone else disagrees, that's good! Because it forces discussion from two knowledgeable sources, which results in learning by everyone. We all know that knowledge expansion is one of the primary tools that keeps us alive. I don't think anyone will disagree with that. Cheers!!!
  15. I damaged my right ear drum and I did NOT have a cold. It was because I had a camera helmet on too tight. I was wearing a hemlet with a chin cup on plastic locking straps (vs. my usual helmet with the standard fabric strap that goes under my jaw, by my neck). I tightened the chin cup too tightly, and when I got under canopy I couldn't yawn to clear my ears. The pain was very intense. When I got to the ground, I ripped the helmet off to try and equalize my ears. I had trouble equalizing my ears on the way up to altitude for the rest of the season. I was concerned that I had permenately damaged my ear drum, but it seemed to heal after taking the winter off from jumping. I didn't have any problems with it this season.
  16. I was, in no way shape or form bagging on phreezone. Nor will I ever bag on anyone here. I am mearly tipping my hat to you for being smart enough to ask a question BEFORE you try something you're not sure of. As for being ocassionally ragged on for a question, don't take it personally. It's the result of the high level of experience some dz.com members have (fortunately for you, you can tap into all thier knowledge and experience simply by posting a question). Very new jumpers generally don't know how dangerous some activities can be. Experienced jumpers are very well aware of the dangers. So when a new jumper asks about something that is incredibly dangerous for thier skill level, they sometimes get a very direct response. Don't ever take it personally. It's just because no one wants to see anyone get hurt. We have to look out of each other. A lot of injuries could be avoided if more people did what you did, and just asked.
  17. egghead_87us, at least you have the common sense to ask advice from more experienced people BEFORE you try something you're not sure of. That's exactly what these forums are for: to learn. This question you asked might have saved your life. Don't ever stop asking questions. Some people on here may give you a hard time, but in the end we're all here to help, and none of us want to see anyone get hurt. Hat's off to you egghead. Keep asking those questions. (by the way, in your profile picture it does look like your head is in the shape of an egg )
  18. If you want to do it, THEN DO IT! If you want it bad enough, you'll figure out a way to make it happen.
  19. I'd say do it, BUT NOT YET! You can do anything in this sport once. To do it safely, you can't skip steps. If you want to be able to tell the story later, don't skip the steps that will keep you safe. You're still very inexperienced. (Not to say that I am highly experienced either. So please don't take that the wrong way.) I'd strongly recommend formal canopy coaching first. I’ve taken a lot of canopy coaching this year, and I assure you it will open up a whole new world of knowledge for you. It will teach you why your canopy does what it does, and how it reacts to all inputs. Any of you more experienced folks please feel free to chime in here, but I think knowing your canopy inside and out is a very important skill to master before you try to fly in close proximity to a huge rock. This I will say for certain...even though you are "only" flying a Sabre 190, you CAN still die doing this. The moment you think you can't get hurt is the moment you lose your greatest asset to staying alive: caution. Good luck!
  20. Quote I've found digital altimeters somewhat difficult to read when jumping with polarized sunglasses. You have to move your wrist around to read the display, but that's because of the way polarized lenses reflect light off of glass. It has nothing to do with the altimeter. Come to think of it, my response here has nothing to do with altimeters, and thus contibutes absolutely nothing this thread at all......so then....off to the next thread to fill it with more useless information.... C-YA!
  21. "But you can do everything right and still die!"Quote I could not agree more. In everything in life, there is ALWAYS a 'Shit happens' factor. You can drive the safest car, maintain it fully, drive carefully, avoid bad weather, wear your seatbelt, and still slip on wet leaves and slide in front of an 18 wheeler and die. Sometimes you do everything right, and shit just happens. That goes for skydiving too. The key to being as safe as possible, while still pursuing your dreams is: "Control everything but the 'Shit Happens' factor, but don't let the 'Shit Happens' factor control you."
  22. But safety is beautiful!!!!.....as am I! Bill, as soon as I can get the money together, you'll have my order.
