Damn northwest weather!
skydivingdutch replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's been a full two weeks since I last jumped, and I had my trip to the DZ all planned n stuff.....I look outside and COMPLETLY overcast....groan. What's most frustrating is that the entire week was skydivable, but then I have classes. This same thing happened last week too. http://dropman.com -
I'm writing new Dropzone software

Do think someone's weght should be required in the software or optional? The weight makes plane and wingloading calculations possible. http://dropman.com -
I'm writing new Dropzone software
skydivingdutch replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Great idea. This is the kind of input that will make this package rule all. And there is no way Im charging $1000's for it. My aim here is to make DZ management more, well, managable, ..... and score some free jumps http://dropman.com -

but ofcouse :) Yes Access sucks something fierce. IF you want to know, the database system used is MySQL. http://dropman.com -

About load time predictions: At my DZ it its really not predicatable at all (hectic sometimes), especially this time of year, with all the weather. The interface is really simple, no hidden shift-click stuff or anything, what you see is what you get. Every person will ahve their info in the system, but they dont have their own control center, because there isnt really a whole lot they can do, except maybe change the phone number. The person at the desk is the one who uses this. System wont care if you make more than one account with the same name, although it might be consusing when you have to choose one. Qulifications are already taken care of Everything that is done to the system goes into a database, so nothing is ever discarded. Export to different sofware will be tricky, and are not a priority at this point, but its a good idea. The data is easily backup-able. http://dropman.com -
1st inconvience/line twist
skydivingdutch replied to Jumpsat14k's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've had quite a few line twists as a student, using these lage ass mighty-mack canopies. Once I transistioned to BOC, never happened again. http://dropman.com -
hmm well, i've never jumped from a helicopter before, so ill get back you on that http://dropman.com

I'm writing new Dropzone software
skydivingdutch replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Wow, thanks for all that helpful info. Most of that is planned, I added team sup[port to my list. The system is inherently networkable, due to web-based nature, Come completion, I could write another front-end that is publicly accessible, good idea. http://dropman.com -
I'm writing new Dropzone software
skydivingdutch replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yes that is all plannned. I've written stuff like this before fo illiterate people and there will be lots of error checking and no cryptic codes and such. Reports are good. http://dropman.com -
Here is the real physics answer An object falling through air with speed v eperiences a resistive force acting in the opposite direction, R R = b*v , where b is a number tha depends on your coss section, whether or not you are wearing a wingsuit etc. The total force on you is force gravity - R. The force determines your acceleration and hence your speed but the force also depends on the speed. There is a speed where the resistive force exactly balances out the force of gravity, called terminal velocity, 120mph roughly for average skydiver. With a greater mass, you influence the number b, making your resistive force, smaller, so that terminal velocity is a bit higher. Also, RW is achieved by you controlling the value of b. make sense? http://dropman.com

I'm writing new Dropzone software
skydivingdutch replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
only one i've heard of is JumpRun, and it costs like $1700 This will be such a better way to go. Sounds like i got most everything covered, but specs change all the time in software development land. http://dropman.com -
I'm writing new Dropzone software
skydivingdutch replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am involved at my DZ, and all the functionality i describe here is based off what i hear from my DZ. Most of it is done on paper, so an upgrade is worthwhile i think. What I would like is when this package is done for it to be usefull for lots of DZ's. How cool would it be to see my system at an other DZ when I'm on vacation? http://dropman.com -
actaully, the physics involed is a bit more subtle. You experience a large change in direction. Your forward speed slows to 0 , and vertical climbs to 120mph in a few seconds. This is definatly noticeable. The cnage in direction requires signifcant acceleration and that is what you feel. http://dropman.com

Congrats. Interesting color scheme :) http://dropman.com

I'm writing new Dropzone software
skydivingdutch replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am writing a (web-based) software package for dropzones, and I would like some input, before i get too far. I have 7 screens: -Finances -Manifest -Schedule -Packing Log -Events -People -Inventory Finances is for dealing with finaces, not suprisingly. you can sell stuff to people (like tshirts, jumps, gear) or buy/pay people for packs , doing videos or so. It will link into the pack log, allowing people to pay for jumps with packs. Also it will generate reports Manifest lets you view the loads that are going up, who is on it ( numver based on plane capacity), if they have paid. It will alert you if someone who hasnt fillout a waiver is manifested, keep an eye on total weights etc. Schedule lets you manage the appointments for the day/week/month/year. See if new or edxisting students are coming out, make new appointments etc (sorta like outlook) Packing Log keeps track of pack jobs. Add, edit and remove jobs, transfer them to finaces. It requirs the packer to be cleared by the DZ for packing Events keeps track of trainings, get togethers etc People, is kindof an address book, and also inncludes weights, license info etc. inventory lets you mangage what you've got, like rigs, airplanes, jumps (prices altitude etc), things for sale n such When done, in like a month or so (got school too ) ill post a working version. So what do you think? I'm sure that somthing is missing, I've never owned a DZ before (somday?) so i don't have a great insight into things required. http://dropman.com -
Is this something that requires a lot of experience? I only just got my A and have 45 jumps. I current am w/o a jumpsuit, and these look really cool. Also, I float a bit, i take it this wouldnt help on RW jumps? Im thinking buying an RW suit and possibly the Pantz to solve that. http://dropman.com

Another thing: Should we look for helmets with side or top mount cameras? I've heard pro's and cons about both. http://dropman.com

I'd rather use a real program like Adobe Premiere. http://dropman.com -

You have no idea how much of a pain it was to get this thing done. I only had the mini DV tape, so I used the computer lab where I work to capture it. Of course with the common misconception that Macs are good/better for anything graphic, the only machine with a DV deck was a Mac. So i have this huge quicktime file (250MB). Final Cut pro was being retarded, so I had to capture with iMovie , then had to use FinalCut Pro to de-interlace and after uploading that now 80MB quicktime to my home computer, I used Cleaner XL to output it Windows Media 9. uhng... Don't think that all happened in one try. Goddamn I need a camera, bypass the stupid Macs at work. http://dropman.com -

This actually wasn't an AFF jump, but we did such a launch. I was working on RW, after static line progression Hah,yeah, my instrucotr did that nicely, cutting the canopy ride. Amazon: I actually jump at the other place, course I know ppl from both. It is pretty annoying sometimes with the rivalry (and beyond). I haven't jumped there yet, but I should sometime. http://dropman.com
