    Fuckin potheads.

Ill await your super intelligent retort.
Well obviously that 5 year old girl is nothing but a lazy pot-head. Like pot will do anything for her except make her want to play video games and eat junk food.
(yes, sarcasm). Actually, because of pot, she will LIVE to play video games and eat junk food.

I would like to know if any of you fire-fighters can offer me any words of advice on nailing a job (once I have finished the course). I am very fit, aside from a well-healing lower back issue. I am also 44 years old.

What ever you do, don't ever join a Volunteer Fire Department, you'll hate it. Bad enough you risk your life and carry 100 lbs of equipment, and suck down oxygen, but your doing all of it for free. It felt good to give something back to the community, but it was a lot of hard work.

    Best-
    Richard

The vast majority of firefighters worldwide are volunteers. Civil societies would be in peril if people followed your advice. I am a third generation and agree it is far more work than many imagine. My state does not cut corners between paid and volunteers for safety reasons. Most people in my community do not realize many of us are not paid and the amount of work we put into it and im fine with it. I do it to help my community and hope they never seen a decline in service because some of us arent paid.

My dad told me he did it because he was fit and capable and someone had too. a simple, modest answer from a good man. i respected and admired him for it. he told me he hoped i would someday follow his example and i have. I hope people ignore your advice and listen to men like my late father.

oh and for the record, its compressed air not oxygen. maybe you would have enjoyed it more if you were better trained and knowledgeable. (i say with a smile)

I have been told that doing volunteer work would look good on me when I finally do apply to a local service. Would you say this is true?

I know this will come as a surprise to you, but not everyone who drinks is a drunk. However, everyone who smokes pot is a pothead. If you need an explanation of the difference, just ask and I'll break it down for you.

I'd like to hear this as well... New Thread though.

Simple, many people who drink are capable of doing so without getting drunk. However, anyone who smokes pot, only does so to get stoned.

Thus everyone who drinks is not a drunk, but everyone who smokes pot is a pot head.
Aah. So you you have a need to making sweeping generalizations without looking at all the facts. That is fair. Carry on.

  5. Labels are for suckers. Be who you are. We are each complex people with complex beliefs and unique perspectives. There is simply no way a label can encapsulate all that. Labels are used by simple minds to simplify their lives, all at the cost of accuracy.
    Edit: spelling error.

Loved both of your suggestions including the music. Great stuff. It's keeping me going through these weeks where I'm not jumping at the moment.

I had to hold off my progression for close to 6 months due to a back injury. Videos were what kept me going too. Anything and everything. Now what I like watching is anything to do with wingsuits and especially freeflying, MOST especially 2's routines. I am pretty sure those are the two disciplines I want to pursue once I am a little more fly in the sky, as it were.

  7. I think the problem is this: Here we have Stephen Fry with his open letter urging the IOC to do the right thing. But then, in likely many very un-open letters, we have Coca Cola, McDonalds, and all the other corporate sponsors saying "we have put a lot of money into the Sochi games... I think you should let this whole thing slide..."
Of course there is no way to prove this. But I always try to follow the money...

Didn't happen in China, not going to happen in Russia either.

There are subtle differences between the China situation and the Russian situation: China is a greater powerhouse, economically, and more difficult to snub. Also there the issue was more of a general human rights issue, whereas in Russia it is pretty specific to LGBT rights. But over all, I tend to agree with you. I doubt the IOC will care.

Sorry if this has been posted before but what is the general view on students trying manuevers on solo jumps such as upside down flying, sitting in a chair position, flying on your back, etc...

Once you get to AFF solos you realize nobody is watching and it is tempting to try some fun stuff but I wonder if it is frowned upon?? Does it vary with DZs?

I was wondering the same myself. Though to be honest, I am pretty sure I am going to try and get a bit of coaching during those jumps....

    ***3 tandems :S

They are a well respected DZ with a very competent chief instructor. So if their system is a little more involved than some, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, figuring they do that to train better, and not to fleece students out of more cash.

I had SD Burnaby recommended to me by two friends. Both are experienced skydivers... one is a master rigger in Eloy, the other is a paratrooper as well as a skydive photographer in Australia. Neither have been to SD Burnaby, so their recommendations were based on the DZ's rep alone. I also know them and know that they would only give me the best recommendation they could.

    3 tandems :S

They teach you tracking, turns, altitude awareness during FF. Then you basically have a canopy piloting coach riding with you, teaching you what you need to know the rest of the way down. I have had no issues with the 3 tandems. There is no convenient wind tunnel nearby, and there is only one drop with two instructors.

I'm currently a student at Skydive Burnaby. This coming Friday will be ground school which they host I believe once a month. It's 3 Tandem jumps for your first 3 jumps, then you would do ground school, then first solo jump with two instructors, and 6 more with one instructor, and a hop and pop. Come out this Friday, do some tandems during the afternoon and do ground school at 5! The folks there are awesome, I'm pretty happy I chose them as my DZ. Best of luck!

I will be there! Woot! Look for the 6'3" bald guy.

And in other news, I scraped my forearms while helping my GF move over the weekend. After some cleaning with water, I walked out without issues. I am expected to make a full recovery.

Both forearms -- wow, sounds like quite a misadventure. Get well soon and keep us posted on your progress.
    Thanks! B|

***I was on the DZ, when it burned in the late 70s, and as bad as that was, this could be much worse if it gets near enough. :(

Here's hoping the winds remain favorable until it can be put out completely.

I'm amazed that fire can spread across a desert. :o
Not all desert is sand. Desert is a label applied to a place due to its low level of precipitation. There are plenty of places that are grassy and still get called desert. Many places along the west coast, in fact, especially just along the inside of the mountains.
